Review off Stream of Consciousness in the Modern Novel
By Burton Dale
This book, though now out of print, went through eight printings from 1954 until 1973. The late Dr. Robert Clay Humphrey was both a poet and an author and as a college professor of English Literature, was well qualified to comment on the subject in his book.

For anyone considering writing a novel, it should be noted that the human mind does not change in nature, century after century, only the outward trappings. Dr. Humphrey explores the deep crannies of the soul both in his own mind and in the minds of the other authors and characters in his writing. It contains a vault of source material for any writer who likes to swim in dark and murky waters.

I knew both the author and his talented wife, Nancy Rubel Humphrey, an accomplished harpsichord artist. My brother married his daughter, Mira Humphrey Dale, a talented painter and artist in her own right. Though the book, now long out of print, is somewhat difficult to find, it belongs in the library of any author who would delve deeply into the human mind and is not afraid of what will be found there.

What a phenomenal book!
By iMatt
Consciousness is a metaphysical abstraction that all people can account for, but few can clearly explain. I have researched a decent amount of books appertaining to consciousness in literature and this one by Humphrey is by far the best. Humphrey's explanations for authorial intent are superb. I will not lie: I have attempted to write a few sentences explaining Humphrey's materialization of consciousness in Modern literature, but I have erased them all in fear that the reader of this review would be turned away from this book by my petty attempt to explain just how masterfully Humphrey articulates thought patterns, memories, and the removal of the authors voice from the work. If your interested in learning how to write a disciplined form of stream of consciousness vs. its juvenile counterpart, "free-writing" then i HIGHLY recommend this book to you. It will not disappoint. There is a reason that so few books exist on the topic of stream of consciousness: it's because few people can take an amorphous concept like consciousness and sculpt it into something concrete for examining.

Navigating the Stream of Thought
By Old China Books
We begin with Joyce, move on to Woolf, and culminate with Faulkner noting along the way
other practitioners and experimenters. We then hitch up our rudimentary understanding
and attempt a little of this obscure revelation of the inner life, and maybe are able to
carpenter together a few words, "picking up whatever was furnished on the job and nailing
them together and sometimes making an okay pig pen."

Sometime later, perhaps if we are very lucky, we come upon Humphrey's book Stream of
Consciousness in the Modern Novel and rise to a higher level of awareness. Humphrey looked
at all the practitioners of this technique, compared their methods, analyzed their approaches,
and consolidated most of the exegesis of other critics into a comprehensive chapbook of all
the devices employed to achieve expositions of inner life presented to us in the writing
of the masters of this literature. Humphrey gives us acute distinctions that illuminate
much of the obscurity inherent in stream of consciousness methods beginning with what is
and what is not stream of consciousness writing, and moving on to show the subtle character
of direct and indirect interior monologue, free association, time and space montage, all
illustrated with excerpts from the minds of Leopold, Clarissa, Benjy and others struggling
through the incoherence and discontinuity of their thought to reveal truths that ultimately
can be understood by readers.

Much as the early mariners with their Bowditch and maps of the unknown were able to cross
oceans and circumnavigate the globe, we now can be confident that with this pilot's guide
in hand we can set sail again for the deeper waters we were not able to navigate when we
first set out into the stream of consciousness.
