Grisha Stewart's updated version of BAT is easy to understand with wonderful illustrations and pictures to help the reader visualize the process. I have enjoyed every chapter, every page and every line of the book. I think it is not only original, but breaking new ground in that it strikes a blow for ethical ways of training. I hope it will spread around the world.

I love the pedagogical approach of this book and the focus on how to install a feeling of control in a dog's life, all in all a fundamental recipe if you want your dog to feel safe and happy. It also adds an ability for dogs to predict events, which further strengthens its self-worth and being in control in relevant life situations. Keeping a distance to what triggers the dog and gradually come closer to it - another dog, a human or whatever the dog reacts to - is a training method with documented good results.

What I especially like in BAT 2.0 is something which is often overlooked in dog training, and that is how to use naturally occurring reinforcers: A method based on the "Premack's principle", or the relativity theory of reinforcement. Grisha does a great job of explaining how to use this in dog training.

The chapter "BAT for Puppy Socialization" earns special mention. It is simply excellent! In my opinion everyone who has a puppy, is getting a puppy, or is just interested in how to take care of puppies, should read and learn from this. In fact, it could be a separate book.

The BAT 2.0 book is a star among training concepts and Grisha Stewart has such a nice way of making everything easy to understand. Add her sense of humor to the topic and you have a book that is hard to put down.

Thanks for checking out my book! I wrote most of it while camping in Alaska with my dog, Peanut and finished up editing with puppy Bean in tow.�

The BAT 2.0 book replaces the need to read the old one, because the technique is very different now. �It's easier to understand and has even more focus on empowerment and stress reduction. I started with the old book as my foundation, but changed pretty much every sentence and added something like 100 more pages.

So unless you just want to compare BAT 1.0 and 2.0, save yourself the expense and only get the new book. Look for me on Facebook if you have questions about it.

BAT is a great way to rehabilitate dog reactivity (aggression, frustration, fear), but it's also really useful for puppy socialization and everyday life with all dogs. BAT is more than a technique - it's a lifestyle for everyone with dogs.

About the Author
Grisha Stewart, MA, CPDT-KA is a dog trainer and international seminar presenter who specializes in empowerment and dog reactivity. She has two books, several DVDs, and runs an online dog training school from Alaska. Grisha also founded Ahimsa Dog Training in Seattle. Ahimsa has earned many awards, including Best of Western Washington. Ahimsa is a Buddhist doctrine of nonviolence to all living things, which reflects Grisha's focus on empowerment training for all animals, including people.

Grisha has a Master's degree in Mathematics from Bryn Mawr College and post-graduate training in psychology with an emphasis on animal behavior from Antioch University. Her first career as a theoretical mathematician and college instructor serves her well in dog training and behavior consultations, because she relies heavily on the problem solving, critical thinking, and teaching skills she gained in that field.

Canine behavior fascinates Grisha and she is highly motivated to help improve our techniques for rehabilitating and training dogs. Best program for reactive dogs.

This is the best training manual for working with reactive dogs that I have found. There are other good ones with the same information, but Grisha Stewart has organized her program in an easy to follow manual. I have helped dogs in classes using her methods, and also helped a friend's dog with great success. I was delighted to see a new edition!

I found it very interesting that I opened this book expecting to start with phone etiquette or the like, but was surprised to begin with Neuroscience and applying that to oneself . I had never heard of this but found it very interesting. Neuroscience was explained by the author as a way to understand our own abilities and to maximize them and to apply the science to others, such as co-workers and employers, to better understand them.
The author does spend some time on our personal appearance to others and how we project ourselves. In a professional setting you want to be professional you do not want to appear as a timid mouse ready to run at a moment’s notice. There are wonderful tricks and techniques the author includes to help a person to communicate as a professional individual in the work environment.
Personal development, goals, conflict resolution are all wonderful skills to establish and to improve upon and are not just for the Personal Assistant but for every person around. That is why I truly believe this book offers so much for others beyond what the title suggests. The Neuroscience and self-analysis is a great tool for a high school entering the work force to someone who has a need to switch careers because the one they have just isn’t working. This book may help to uncover why that is.
The Definitive Personal Assistant does provide the information the title suggests. Skills of the trade and tips of improvement are inside the pages once the assistant as a person has been covered. Techniques on how to handle objectives or situations are discussed with examples or instruction to help a personal assistant become the best they can.
I liked the focus on the Personal Assistant and was fascinated by the approach from the Neuroscience aspect.

Unfortunately this book’s title suggests that it may be overlooked by many, assuming instead that it is just a guide to word processing, answering the telephone and putting up with a challenging boss. Ignore it at your own risk - it is a lot more than that! It can be truly a definitive guide for a personal assistant or secretary and many others!

When you glance at the chapter headings, you straight away get an idea about its potential and depth: using neuroscience to maximise your brain for excellence, relationship management, compassionate communication, confidence, self-belief and goal setting, ergonomics, perfect presentations and the list goes on. Oh, and a “chapter to share with your boss” for good measure too.

As you read it, you soon discover that it is an excellent introduction to many fascinating subjects that many secretaries and personal assistants should know about. It is quite possible that they already know a fair bit of this stuff too, partially through trial and error, experience and perhaps latter-day education and continuing professional development programmes. Yet it is a credible, powerful compendium.

There is a lot more to being a secretary than collecting dry cleaning and fetching coffee; in this reviewer’s experience the position is one of the key roles in an organisation, knowing everything that is going on. It is not unknown for the same person to be better informed than the executive they serve! As well as top-rate office and administrative skills being necessary, knowing how to be a diplomat, nursemaid, peacekeeper and detective can help.

This is by no means a dumbed-down book. Clearly it is abridged. You can only get a taster to many subjects, such as neuroscience (that can easily fill an entire bookshelf and our understanding of this subject is ever changing). Kenneth G. Hanna, BA, ThM, ThD, has taught for twenty years at Dallas Theological Seminary and currently serves as senior professor of Bible exposition and director emeritus at the Houston Campus of Dallas Seminary. He is the author of From Moses to Malachi: Surveying the Old Testament and numerous articles in Moody Monthly, mission periodicals, and the Christian Life Bible. He and his wife, Mary, have two children, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Dr. Ken Hanna has produced the best New Testament introductory material available for churches, Bible colleges, seminaries, and Bible study groups. This is a must for teaches and preachers alike. I require this book for all of my NT courses, and his Moses to Malachi for all of my Old Testament courses.

Solid collection -- with 1 all-time CLASSIC!

This is as solid as NE Tiptree collection, but worth it all 4 "A Momentary Taste of Being," 1 of THE most devastating SF stories U'll ever read. Impossible 2 Dscribe, it takes 70 pages, but U'll B knocked out. Should've won an award, Cms 2 B completely overlooked, even by Tiptree's fans -- would make a great movie: the enormity & the Dspair, as U discover what Man's Ultimate Goal really is. Vivid, riveting, totally involving. A tough read, but what an impact! "Her Smoke Rose Up Forever" is pretty powerful, 2. Tiptree's suicide was a big loss 2 the SF field. I also recommend her novel BRIGHTNESS FALLS FROM THE AIR, & many of the stories in her earlier collection, WARM WORLDS AND OTHERWISE.

Star Songs of an Old Primate By Alice Sheldon writing as James Tiptree, Jr.

SOME CURIOUS INFORMATION ABOUT THIS TITLE:
Del Rey/Ballantine issued this paperback book collection of Tiptree stories in January 1978 and is the only edition ever published in English. It is the third of five story collections published in her lifetime. All seven stories were previously published magazines and anthologies 1969-1976. The book is 270 pages long and included an informative introduction by Ursula LeGuin. There is an author's introduction to the story "Your Hapolid Heart". Sadly none of the other stories have one.

STORY TITLES AND OPINIONS:
"Your Hapolid Heart" - Two scientists are sent to an inhabited Planet to determine if the natives are human. They discover some strange reproductive methodologies. I lament my knowledge of biology is wanting otherwise I may have "understood" this intensely serious story better.

"And So On, and So On" - A very short story that did not work for me.

'Her Smoke Rose Up Forever" - A freezing cold morning and a young man sets out with great expectation to shoot at ducks with his new shotgun and then some very uncanny incidents take place. I could not determine how the "incidents" related to the boy with the shotgun, but that's what she wrote.

"Houston, Houston, Do you Read?" Winner of the Hugo and Nebula award in 1977. Mildly interesting story about men from the past confronting a very, very different future. Male characters were not very credible. Would NASA select a macho man, an over zealous preacher type and a laid back doctor on a space mission where they would be cooped up for a long period, hardly. Seems dated reading it in 2013 but must have wowed the award voters in 1977.

"A Momentary Taste of Being" at 99 pages the longest story in this collection. A personal favorite. Teeming Earth sends a stellar exploration ship to find a habitable planet. It seems the entire crew is delusional after living in a can for ten years. Alien evokes image of sexual congress with mankind resulting in, well, who knows. Thoughtful and thought provoking.

"The Psychologist Who Wouldn't Do Awful Things To Rats" I hope those folks in white lab coats performing experiments on animals are less creepy that the characters in this story.

"She Waits for All Men Born" Mutation and evolution brings mankind to a very terminal condition in this chilling story - another favorite.

Say, this is an uncommon collection by a most clever author with an extraordinary real-life story. 1st time readers are in for an astounding treat.

If Only It Were That Simple

This book was really an insult to my intelligence. Where did she get her PH.D from a Cracker Jack box? Her book is page after page of stereotypical cliches! I CAN NOT believe that made a comment about Tommy Hilfiger appearing on Oprah saying that he didn't want black people wearing his clothes. If that isn't the oldest urban legend. Come on! Was there no fact checking involved in this process? Then she says that black women need to learn to embrace themselves as God made them and then turns around and says if you don't like your hair alter it!

What a waste of money! Hide this book from your impressionable teenage daughters!

Cornish's Choices Are Sweet!

She's done it again-telling it like it is! As always, Dr. Cornish gives it to you straight, no chaser. In "10 Good Choices" she challenges black women to take back their power and their lives from the bad relationships, bad careers, bad investments, bad companies, and bad memories. It is clear that she has a personal interest in putting her fellow sisters (and keeping them) on the path to becoming their best selves, living their best lives-something we ALL were put on this planet to do.
In life, we have choices to make, she explains, and Cornish's `good choices' are sweet, ones that will bring the reader joy and abundance-if she (or he, because, fellas, this nongender-specific, practical and timely advice is applicable to you too!) is willing to uncross the arms, open the mind and embrace life-change. From `Accepting Better Love' and `Making Money Work for You,' to `Giving Stress a Perpetual Rest' and `Rewriting Your Life's Script,' there is something to be gotten here by all--young or "seasoned."
The author's consistent theme of self-love and -care (based on the foundation of empowering one to having a strong sense of self, value, direction, humor, belonging and being) is reminiscent of--at the risk of making comparisons--"Dr. Phil (as in "Tell-It-Like-It-Is" McGraw of "The Oprah Winfrey Show). Excellent for every woman!!!

This is a modern-day classic bestseller! Any woman who wants to achieve more in life will really enjoy reading this helpful and important guidebook. It is not a frivilous quick fix, but an effective step-by-step blueprint for achieving success. Dr. Cornish's writing is real, honest, and straight-forward, with a lot of compassion and wisdom. This book has received many positive reviews, both from the media and sisters around the country. I read only "one" negative review, which was posted on this website from a reader in Atlanta. The reviewer incorrectly claimed that in the book, Dr. Cornish wrote about designer "Tommy Hillfiger on the Oprah show." I read and re-read the book, and to Dr. Cornish's credit the book never ever mentioned Mr. Hillfiger's name in that setting. The reviewer used bad judgment and her assumption was unfortunate. However, "one bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch." That is to say, there are a whole "bunch" of successful-minded sisters, like me, who have been helped by reading the "10 Good Choices That Empower Black Women's Lives." It was the #1 pick in the "Sisters On The Move" reading group. Keep up the terrific work Dr. Grace Cornish. We need your "pearls of wisdom." 10 GOOD CHOICES.. will bring out the winner in you-- try it for yourself-- I loved it!

Some 250 years ago, the great Philidor wrote, "The pawns are the soul of chess." Although that statement is perhaps the most common cliche in the literature of the game, it is too often misunderstood.

Pawns are usually considered weak because of their limited range of movement. But the pawns' restricted mobility is precisely what makes them so important strategically: they form a semi-permanent structure -- often called a "pawn skeleton" -- that establishes the territorial lines of the coming battle and thus the nature of the battle itself. How "P.S.C." helped me

I am currently a USCF Life-Master. I have won more than 100 rated tournaments. My personal chess library is over 1,200 books.
When I was studying to become a Master, it was a tremendous eye-opener to me to discover that there are not more than around 15 basic pawn structures.
GrandMaster Andy Soltis (who has played me and beaten me twice in over-the-board encounters) lays out logically, all the basic different pawn structures. He shows that there might be dozens of different move orders to reach a certain structure, but once you get there-- there are only a limited number of plans that work within the given pawn structure.
He logically and sensibly lays out these different plans. He shows many practical examples of how each plan may have worked in real, OTB play; usually in the games of a well-known GM. The examples are very poignant. His advice is easy, sensible, logical, and readily assimilated. It does not matter if you are a Master, or just a Novice who wishes to improve ... this is a book for you.
Credit this one book for turning a humble expert into a Master who has tied for first in four different State Championships. Easily belongs in my list of, "The Ten Best Instructional Books Ever Written! "

Helps alot when learning the openings

I hate learning openings. This book has actually helped me learn the ideas behind the openings in a rather painless way. How can that be you may ask, since this is a book about the middlegame based on various pawn structures. Well, the reason is that you cannot really differentiate easily between an opening a middlegame and an endgame. They are all part of a seemless whole. Various openings lead to certain pawn structures which dictate certain middlegame plans for both sides. If you understand what the idea behing the middlegame plan is, then you understand the moves you need to make in the opening which makes memorization of variations easier. It also allows you to play the right move once your opponent goes "out of book" because you have a better understanding of what position the particular opening is trying to accomplish.
I'll give an example of how the book has helped me. About a month ago I decided to learn the Caro-Kann as black (mostly to cut down on the amount of theory I need to know against e4). So what I did was look through the various line of the Caro-Kann in the MCO and see what the final pawn structures looked like. As it turns out, there are only about 5 pawn structures that are likely to develop. They are the: Caro-Slav formation; Kingside pawn chain; the panov formation; isolani; and the orthodox exchange center. Each of these pawn formations are discussed in pawn structure chess (the first three each have their own chapter and the last two are both found in the chapter on the QGD and its descendants). After studying the general strategic ideas for both black and white arrising from each of these pawn formations, I went back and looked at the variations again. All of a sudden the ideas behind the opening made sense and the moves of the variations seemed logical because I knew what the purpose behind the move was (As Silman says, the real purpose behind the opening is to create an imbalance and then develop around that imbalance).
The effects of this book have helped me in the first game I played as black in the Caro. My opponent (rated over 100 pts higher than me) played a variation of the Caro that I wasn't familiar with. We both went "out of book" fairly early. However, I kept in mind what the middle game pawn structure was that I was aiming for and where my pieces needed to be to accomplish that goal. Well my first outing as black in the Caro was a success. The allegedly "dull" or "boring" Caro notched a 20-move win for me -- not bad.
This book has also helped me see the similarities between various openings and how one opening can transpose into another. This is critical information to have at your disposal. The book does not exhaustively treat any particular pawn structure, however that is not its intent. The idea is to familiarize the reader with the structures themselves, the openings that they are most likely to arise from and the strategic ideas for both sides. Certainly entire books have been written on the isolated pawn. But this book is a great starting point to give an overview buttressed with a few examples of each strategy either succeeding or failing.
All-in-all this is an excellent book. I really do not understand some of the criticisms I've read about it. The book is not supposed to be about pawn play so there is no comparison between it and "pawn power" because each book attempts to cover a different idea. Moreover, the fact that some of the examples are one-sided does not bother me because the idea was to show how a strategy is carried out in its pure form. The lack of depth of treatment of each structure is also the book's strength. The idea is to give an overview, not an exhaustive treatment since such a treatment could conceivably cover an entire book or more for each chapter (or subchapter) in the book. If you are serious about improving your understanding of how to conduct a middlegame and how that middlegame is tied to the opening due to pawn structure then this is the book for you.

Pawn structure and long term planning!

I did hear that saying that, "pawns are the sole of chess", and "chess structure is the backbone of your position". Mr. Soltis shows you the importance of planning ahead and having the right pawn structure, or making your opponent have the wrong one - especially looking toward an endgame. Now this not a book for a beginner, who should be learning basic tactics, traps, ideas behind opening moves and basic endgames. This is a book for someone past that stage that needs to learn the more advanced idea of recognizing how to use pawns and the importance of planning ahead keeping the the pawns (the little people!!) in mind! Don't forget the "little people" would be a funny but true statement.
