About the Author
Mark Raymond Harrington (1882-1971) was one of the pioneers in Cuban Archaeology at the beginning of the twentieth century in a country in which anthropological science began to develop. His studies and findings allowed the development of archaeological studies on the island.At the request of Mr. George G. Heye, director of American Indian�s Museum, Harrington went to Cuba on February 1915 with the mission in mind to continue the archeological explorations that Teodoro de Booy left inconclusive.This was the first scientific attempt to study in detail Cuba's first inhabitants and as a result widening of the Cuban archeological register. His main destination was the easternmost Cuban municipality, in the province of Guant�namo, called Baracoa. At one of the sites, he found stone and clay artifacts. Betwen 1918 to 1919, he explored some caves in the Guant�namo area. His explorations led to him to publish his notes and findings in a work entitled: Cuba Before Columbus (1921), published in New York by the Heye Foundation and the Museum of the American Indian. This work was intended to be a two part series of al least three volumes. However, Harrington just published Part I, volumes 1 and 2. In 1935, this work was translated by the Cuban scholars Antonio Mestre and Fernando Ortiz into the spanish language. The controlled and well registered extensive excavations carried out by Harrington in several locations in Cuba where he collected materials such as seashells, stone and clay items able him to stablished a chronology and to determine the cultural stages of Cuba's aboriginal population. This chronology is used up to the present. Today, Cuba Before Columbus is an obligatory references for those scholars interested in Cuba prehistory. Dr. Angel Rodriguez, Editor. Chronicle of archeological excavations in Cuba

A somewhat outdated book about the pre-Colombian inhabitants of Cuba, but still a very interesting book for those that are interested in the excavations that took place in the early nineteen hundreds. It reads like a diary so it is somewhat boring as reading material, but it wasn't meant to be anything but a chronicle of the archeological excavations that took place on the island and nothing else. The illustrations are very good.

Not layman friendly

Appears to be written by a mathematician, not easily digested with many steps left out solutions or not layman friendly. There are many errors in the solutions and no published errata. This should only be used in conjunction with a textbook that teaches the material or you risk simply mimicking the solutions rather than truly understanding the material.

Schaum's has books for just about every subject. I picked this one up to go along with and Engineering Economics course. It was a good addition to the book and the worked out answers helped. These books are not 'idiot's guides' they are just full of extra problems with worked out answers. If you need a little extra help or just more examples these book series are a good choice.

About the Author
Max Gunther was born in England and emigrated to the US when he was 11. He attended schools in New Jersey and received his B.A. from Princeton University in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army in 1950-51 and was a staff member of Business Week from 1951 to 1955. He then served as a contributing editor of Time for two years. His articles were published in several magazines and he wrote several books, including The Luck Factor, How to Get Lucky, The Very, Very Rich and How They Got That Way, Instant Millionaires and Wall Street and Witchcraft.

Entertaining, but not much "actionable intelligence".

Max Gunther summarized "the speculator's wisdom" into 12 major and 16 minor axioms. The axioms sound true and useful, although interestingly they lean toward defensive strategy in the spirit of "first rule is not to lose any money". Gunther dismisses technical analysis as pointless staring at random patterns, he thinks markets are entirely random and unpredictable (bordering playing the lottery). He cites earth quakes, terrorist attacks, financial collapse to prove that point, but these events are indeed extremely rare. He advises against diversification, one should go all in with meaningful bets, without diluting the gains. Then stay there, but not too long. He dismisses long term planning, listening to the crowd (although multiple studies prove the wisdom of the crowd over the individual, disregarding bubble effects), dollar cost averaging, forecasts, intuition, patterns, but offers no alternative.

Very little can be used in trading or speculation. When, what, why, how, where should a speculative bet be made?( Jesse Livermore’s book “How To Trade In Stocks” is dismissed as “perfect nonsense”. At least Livermore attempted to be more specific than listing “axioms”. )

After the reader is convinced about unpredictability of the market (with ever present danger of losing all investment money) he is left with no counterpoint. This is the biggest weakness of the book. While it is an entertaining read, if someone is looking for truly useful advice, I would recommend "The Coffeehouse Investor" or "Millionaire Teacher". If one aims to be more than an "investor", I suggest "The Perfect Speculator". But if one is an “axiom” believer, I recommend the excellent “Simple Rules” by Sull and Eisenhardt.

Hidden gem

When financial professionals are asked what one book would they like to have if they were stranded on a desert island " Reminiscences of a stock operator" is most often cited. While I enjoyed it and there is much wisdom tucked in it's pages it is a bit dated and I'm hard pressed to follow the rules of a man who took his own life. Perhaps he was not on to something.
The Zurich Axioms on the other hand, speak to me as the truth laid bare, no matter whether society agrees or not.
This may not be the most highly touted book, nor written by the hottest author, but it speaks with great wisdom.

Some Axioms Insightful

I bought this book on the recommendation of Larry Williams, who claimed it was one of the few best books he'd ever read on investing.

I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. What at first held my attention in a vice grip, slowly slackened as I progressed through this book.

I found a few of the 12 axioms significantly insightful. I was able to learn some alternative ways of looking at my financial world. It was worth the read for those few axioms, but not entirely motivational or life-altering. This is a relatively basic book that tends to disprove or caution the against financial cliche's and being lulled into false security or poor investments. This is a book of what not to do. I suggest you read the chapters (axioms) that sound interesting to you. One nice benefit of this book is a concise paragraph or two summary at the end of the chapter of every major axiom. These will not take you long to read if read in succession.

Fascinating enough for adults, gross enough for kids!

My soon-to-be 8 year old daughter has a bit of a macabre streak -- she saw this book at the mall and immediately put it on her birthday list. The rest of the family thought it a bit odd, but this IS the same girl that carries around a skeleton doll for the entire month of October...

'How They Croaked' goes further than just describing the "How" of the way some famous folks' lives ended -- there's also quite a bit of insight into some of the other medical issues they fought. And it doesn't just end at death... the book also reveals some surprising stories about missing body parts, thievery, etc. I learned quite a bit having it read aloud from the backseat during a roadtrip! Note: The book doesn't mince words when it comes to slicing, dicing and decomposing, so you can also expect this to lead to more conversations about anatomy, etc. Heed the notice at the beginning that says "If you don't have the guts for gore, do not read this book."

The publisher listed the book as appropriate for ages 10 to 14, but even at 8, my daughter was okay with it. YMMV. You'll definitely get used to hearing "Ewwwwww! Hey, did you know __________?"

Interesting for both Kids and Adults

The subtitle says it all: The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous. Some the awfully famous whose ends Georgia Bragg tells her readers about are King Tut, Albert Einstein, Galileo, Charles Dickens, Marie Curie, and James Garfield, among others.

Bragg spares no detail in telling us how the people she chose to be included in her book died.

In addition to the details of their deaths, Bragg also includes other interesting tidbits of history. For instance, after telling us about George Washington's strange end, she adds a section on Presidential Death Facts. She provides the readers information on the presidents whose faces appears on US money, from Washington to U.S. Grant, and the presidents who died in office, etc.

Adults may find the descriptions too detailed, but the age group that the book is written for, will love every little detail. It may be hard for adults to read the book to their kids, but the kids are going to love the book.

The bottom line is that both adults and kids will love this book. It is a given that the kids will want to share the facts they learn and the book itself. Adults will find themselves wanting to share the facts as well. The problem for the parents is that their kids won't let them borrow their book.

My 11 year old son really liked this book

I bought this for my son the summer after 5th grade when he was 11 (it was one of the options for him to pick from a required reading list for 6th grade). He's a slow reader so he doesn't enjoy reading much, but he liked this book. The great thing about this book is that it's made up of many short stories rather than long chapters.
The stories are very brief summaries of the lives and deaths of famous people like King Tut, Henry VIII, Christopher Columbus, Albert Einstein, and Edgar Allan Poe. There's a total of 19 famous people listed in the Table of Contents.
This book was easy for my son to read without feeling overwhelmed because each mini story is only about 5-7 pages.
Plus I enjoyed the facts he shared with me each time he read about someone.
I have friends whose 10-11 year olds are reading the Twilight series of books. My son would have a panic attack if he had to read a 500+ page book. Granted, he'll eventually need to get used to the idea of reading big books as school progresses, but for now this is good for him.
