During the presidential election of 1936, Doremus Jessup, a newspaper editor, observes with dismay that many of the people he knows support the candidacy of a fascist, Berzelius Windrip. When Windrip wins the election, he forcibly gains control of Congress and the Supreme Court, and, with the aid of his personal paramilitary storm troopers, turns the United States into a totalitarian state. About the Author
Nobel Prize-winning writer Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) is best known for novels like Main Street, Babbitt, Arrowsmith (for which he was awarded but declined the Pulitzer Prize), and Elmer Gantry. A writer from his youth, Lewis wrote for and edited the Yale Literary Magazine while a student, and started his literary career writing popular stories for magazines and selling plots to other writers like Jack London. Lewis s talent for description and creating unique characters won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930, making him the first American writer to win the prestigious award. Considered to be one of the greats of American literature, Lewis was honoured with a Great Americans series postage stamp, and his work has been adapted for both stage and screen.

Christopher Hurt is an accomplished narrator with a lengthy resume of popular titles for Blackstone. A graduate of George Washington University s acting program, he currently resides in New York City.

It wouldn't be published today

Sinclair Lewis describes how America could find itself slipping into fascism. I say it couldn't be published today, because - even though it was written in 1935 - it sounds too much like the politics of 2016. The similarities to the rise of Trump are too numerous to list. It should be required reading for Americans voting in this election - or in any election in the future.

I highly recommend it. This is one book that will haunt ...

A frightening, haunting book which, although written in in the US, was created very much in the shadow of Hitler's ascendancy. What makes it so unsettling is its continued relevance in light of our latest debacle of a presidential election. I highly recommend it. This is one book that will haunt the reader for a long time to come.

"Pass it on to our children!"

The price of $7.99, happily paid for this Lewis' kindle, is so much cheaper than the heavy price of my first clandestine acquaintance with the same book during the years of my USSR youth in the fifties: it well could be from 5 to 7 years in labor camps, so I was really lucky then to escape this punishment, given for any anti-Soviet reading. Well, Mr. Lewis himself had nothing to do with such an interpretation of the book: he was writing about the threat of fascism, not of socialism. But Stalin's censors were quite shrewd in their understanding that practice of fascist hell in America would look just a bit too familiar for readers in a socialist paradise here. I have no boldness to comment the excellent book itself (it's about the same as to comment Dostoyevsky's "The Possessed", which was as clear warning about horrors of Communism for the Russian readers). Unfortunately, neither masterpiece was believed by their respective societies, so the best comments to them are made now not by readers, but by life. Now it's a life, which is very different from the thirties: though terms like "fascism", "capitalism" or "socialism" are still widely used, but for the majority of our politicians (both in the USA and elsewhere) they are hardly anything today but a purely technological means to hide their lust for immense power and immense wealth. That's – for modern politicians. As for modern voters – I can't agree with Mr. Gary Scharnhorst's afterword: "Lewis’s message— his protest of middle-class complacency and intellectual regimentation, what we today call “political correctness” on both the left and the right— remains as relevant and timely as ever". With all my love to optimism, I think that in our sad reality this book isn't timely any more. Which doesn't make it less great, of course. What's the use to read it most attentively in our 2014 then (except pure pleasure of a fine literature's taste, naturally)? Well, another American author, Mr. Ray Bradbury, saw this use in his "Fahrenheit 451", where a few fugitives from the book-burning world were learning pages of Bible, Shakespeare, Aristophanes, Thoreau and other treasures by heart. Because they were thinking: "We'll pass the books on to our children, by word of mouth, and let our children wait, in turn, on the other people. A lot will be lost that way. But you can't MAKE people listen. They have to come round in their own time, wondering what happened and why the world blew up under them. It can't last". Being an optimist I believe too with all my heart that it can't last and, thus, "It Can't Happen Here" does certainly deserve to be passed on to our good children "by word of mouth", - so, please, read it! Doesn't match P4 Golden Edition, but a great guide anyway

Very informative. Unfortunately, I bought this after I bought Person 4 Golden Edition on my VITA only to realize that this guide is directed towards what I assume to be the PS2 Version of P4. The information, so far, seems to line up to a certain extent, but some of the answers to the quiz questions aren't present, and it appears that some of the general information regarding certain personas doesn't line up either. All in all, I bought this to more or less help me guide my way through the game without screwing up everything, and so far, it's done just that.

Information aside, the book is beautiful and really captures the persona spirit. I've throughly enjoyed reading it so far and I imagine I'll continue enjoying it as my journey through Inaba continues.

Sir Geoffrey's is a great work, worth every minute spent reading it. One gains an understanding of the times, the society, the national and international politics, the economy, the religious issues -- and the fascinating Tudors and their administrators. A wonderful piece of work. Too bad the publisher Routledge packaged this masterpiece in a miserly volume meanly produced by The Guernsey Press. The type, which looks as though plates were made by photocopying some earlier printing, is like the fine print in a sales document -- so miniscule one must squint even in very good light. On many pages the text flows into the narrow gutters so that one must forcibly press the book open to make out what lies next to the binding. Because of the cheapness of the edition, reading it will be slow going for you, unless you do as I did: Force each two-page spread onto the flat bed of a photocopier, set the enlargement at 120%, and copy the text. Once I did that, the reading went smoothly. Shame on you, Routledge and Guernsey Press, for giving us such a fine work in such a shoddy presentation.

Entertaining and Comprehensive Survey

Direct, opinionated, sometimes even combative, Elton delivers a tour de force in historical survey. This book is a highly readable, meticulously researched, and thoroughly engaging review of the period from the beginning of the reign of Henry VII to the death of Elizabeth. As survey of English history during the time of the Tudors, you can't do much better than this book.

The character and accomplishments of each of the rulers stands out as a uniquely individual: Henry VII, the fiscally responsible monarch who established the Tudor claim to the throne and restored the monarchy to solvency; Henry VIII the religiously orthodox ruler who nonetheless broke with Rome and established the Church of England; Edward, the protestant fanatic who (fortunately?) did not live long enough to have much impact; Mary, sincere but of limited ability as a queen; and of course Elizabeth.

Elizabeth's portrait is perhaps the most interesting, since she reigned longest and cast such a huge shadow over the time. The view is a balanced one. Elton is not over-awed by his subject, as so many biogrpahers of Elizabeth seem to be. He acknowledges her political deftness and sure-fire judge of men's ability, without losing sight of her failings and personal weaknesses. Her fiery temper and vainty are not forgotten and not every decision she makes is hailed as correct - nor is she dismissed as being merely "lucky" for her entire 45 year reign, as the occassional critic of Elizabeth seems to imply.

The true hero of the work, however, is none of the monarchs, not even Henry VII whom Elton seems to think quite highly of. It is Thomas Cromwell, who essentially ran the government during the crucial years of Henry VIII's break with Rome. Elton credits him with "revolutionizing" the beauracracy of the country as well as guiding policy for the entire span of his service. Hea rgues that the revolution in Henry VII's time was guided primarily by Cromwell and merely "consolidated" under Elizabeth.

Along the way, other men of ability and position who influnenced the course of history are given time as well. There is the brilliant but ultimately unsuccessful Woolsey, who Elton believes set the stage for the collapse of support for Catholicism in England, William Cecil (later Lord Burghley), who was Elizabeth's chief minister and right hand man throughout most of her reign, and the tragically unstable Essex who was his own worst enemy, to name only a few.

A great introduction or refresher for those interested in learning more about a period that was crucial to the formation of the England that become the world's dominant power.

Logically argued; beautifully expressed.

Elton is the most dangerous of historians -- clear, logical and able to charm with his (sometimes) dry wit.
Although fair due is given to all the monarchs:
Henry VII is capable and prudent;
Henry VIII is less capable, less prudent and in above his head;
Edward VI is selfish and malleable (but he was young);
Mary is sincere and narrow (Here Elton makes one of the few unfair statements in the book. He says, truly enough I expect, that during "Bloody Mary's" reign fewer people were killed for the cause of religion or rebellion than under any other Tudor. This ignores the brevity of her reign and makes no allowance for what might have been if Catholicism had been forcibly reintroduced.);
Elizabeth is truly a great ruler;
...the real hero is Thomas Cromwell who, in engineering Henry's divorce, established England as a state ruled by law.
A wonderful book.

Using this book, evaluators will be able to identify, analyze, and judge 26 evaluation approaches and to apply the Joint Committee Program Evaluation Standards to discriminate between legitimate and illicit approaches.

Recognizing that no single evaluation approach is always best, the authors assist evaluators to select approaches that best fit a particular evaluation assignment. A case drawn from housing and community development illustrates the application of six noteworthy approaches: experimental design, case study, Stufflebeam's CIPP Model, Scriven's consumer-oriented evaluation, Stake's responsive evaluation, and Patton's utilization-focused evaluation.

About the Author
Daniel L. Stufflebeam, Ph.D., is Distinguished University Professor and Harold and Beulah McKee Professor of Education at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. He founded the Evaluation Center at Ohio State University in 1965 and was its director until 2002.

Anthony J. Shinkfield, Ed.D., has served in numerous positions in education leadership, including assistant director, Research and Planning Directorate, Education Department of South Australia. He is currently involved in the evaluation of independent schools and universities in Australia.

Excellent overview of evaluation methodology

I bought this text as I am doing an Evaluation subject in my Masters degree, and Daniel Stufflebeam is considered one of the experts in the field. The text is extremely comphrensive in it's coverage of evaluation methodology, and covers most of the literature in the field of program evaluation. Evaluation methodology is quite complex and the choices of what method can be overwhelming. There is good critique throughout and it covers evaluation in government, social services, not for profit, for profit and education.

I would say this is the worst book I've ever read

I would say this is the worst book I've ever read. Having a Ph.D in the field of research and evaluation, I find this book EXTREMELY trivial. The points are very difficult to figure out, and the logic behind sentences are jumping. An idea a sentence can deliver will be developed into many sentences. It is more of a headache even than stats books. If you are going to buy it, I would definitely recommend you read some chapters online and then decide if you like it. 99.9% of chance you will understand what I am saying.

One of the most inspiring books I have ever read!

I am currently attending theological seminary, and the film "Dead Man Walking" inspired me to look into prison ministry. Helen Prejean's personal account of her work at Angola State Prison was even more inspiring than the film. I agree wholeheartedly with her theology that we must love even those who have done evil things, for every human being is a CHILD OF GOD. Jesus Christ called us to love one another, and Prejean firmly practices Christian love in what I believe to be its true sense: loving ALL human beings, regardless of their deeds. Prejean brought to light the corruption of our criminal justice system, and I was shocked but trustworthy of her data. As a first-year seminary student, I identified with her initial fear and uneasiness at entering a project about which she knew little, and I applaud her ability to befriend convicted rapists and murderers honestly, yet without condoning their crimes. I am a Protestant woman studying to become a minister, so in some ways my life will differ from Sister Helen's, but I can only pray for the strength to emulate her, and I thank her for her great inspiration.

Fascinating!

What makes this book so intense is that you know it's real. It is well written, descriptive without being overbearing and detatched enough to give you a fair perspective. The movie runs along similar lines as the book, except the method of execution, and the book delves into far more detail, as you would expect. Although an anti-death penalty activist, Helen Prejean has not written a anti-death penalty book. It's a straightforward narrative that draws the reader in and doesn't let go. She is a very talented lady and you feel a huge respect for what she does. Very compelling reading.

Amazing Book! Opened My Eyes.

When I first seen the movie for "Dead Man Walking" a few years ago I was captivated right away by this story of Redemption! I must say however, the book is so much better because in all honesty that blended the stories of Patrick Sonnier & Robert Lee Willie who was also sentenced to die in the electric chair.

This Book has completely changed my view on Capital Punishment. I used to believe in the "Eye for an Eye" Scripture when I read this book it got me to thinking, would Jesus Christ if he were living on earth today would he pull the switch or inject these poisons into someones body? I don't think Christ would do that!

I'm not saying that I don't understand the victim's family's rage and want for revenge because I do. My point is this though Yes, Patrick Sonnier & Robert Lee Willie commited some horrible crimes and I in no way condone what these two men did, however I have learned things about Capital Murder trials that it is more expensive to execute a prisoner than life imprisonment is.

Sister Helen Prejean is a wonderful writer and she draws you into the book. I felt like I was there with Patrick Sonnier & Robert Lee Willie. This book has completely changed everything on my outlook on the subject of the Death Penalty here in the United States and now I do think it should be abolished.

These are just my opinions of course, but if you have ever been torn over the Death Penalty I recommend this book to anyone who can remain open to both sides read this book! The decision is yours on whether you will let it change your heart or not!
