Darkness lies closer than you think....

Liana Clymer is running away - from her divorce, from her past, from herself. Leaving behind everything she knows, she finds herself ensconced in a fuchsia-colored cottage in the swampy hinterlands of the Florida panhandle. Far from the grown sons who don't return her calls, her only companion her dog, Liana decides to put her best foot forward and get to know whoever lives in the blue house across the street, the only neighbors within sight of her new home. But minutes after a teenage boy, Justin, answers the door and wins her over with his shy kindness, his face appears on the TV screen and is immediately recognizable as that of the child who was taken from his parents two years ago. Worse, Justin's abductor has no intention of letting Liana go.

A powerful will to live - and to save Justin too - seizes hold of Liana. She will fight tooth and nail to survive. But does she have what it takes to thwart a wily, depraved psychopath for whom abuse is a way of life...and killing is routine?

Worth Checking Out
By RJPetyo
Liana Clymer is divorced and is also estranged from her two grown sons. She has recently moved to rural Florida with her dog Schweitzer in hopes of starting anew. She makes the mistake of visiting her nearest neighbor to introduce herself.

Amy and Chad Bradely are two young parents whose marriage has been strained by the kidnapping of their son Justin. He was stolen two years ago but Amy has never given up hope of finding him alive. She is constantly placing advertisements and soliciting phone calls from a nyone who might have seen something. Chad wants to move on.

These two stories intertwine in a story a dark suspense. I mean, “very dark.” This is a multi layered story of pedophilia, the Stockholm syndrome, emotional abandonment, and violence and survival. Liana and Justin are severely tested, and whether or not they will survive to the end is questionable.

The novel’s opening is riveting. After the description of the kidnapping, I was hooked. Unfortunately the rest of the novel didn’t quite live up to that promise. I got the impression that the main character’s ordeal could have been ended at almost any point and was just being extended for the convenience of the plot. I was thrown off by Ms. Springer’s jumping from character to character in different chapters, something she has done well in previous works. In this novel two characters are prominent in the beginning, then disappear for the bulk of the book. We don’t hear from Justin’s point of view until the very end, and it is disconcerting. The obligatory appearances of law enforcement authorities seem forced and phony.

But I don’t want to be too negative. I enjoyed the novel. It is filled with interesting characters and there is a dynamic, suspenseful and satisfying ending. This work is well worth checking out.

Real Page Turner!
By whitfield25
This book is suspenseful and very well-written! However, I thought the protagonist was out of her mind to knock on a neighbor's door, that she had never met, walk through the door and make herself at home with two strangers involved in a kidnapping. what was she thinking? More than the intense violence in this book, I had a bigger problem with the snakes and the alligators! The action and suspense transformed this book into a heart-rattling page turner that I could not put down. Nicely Done!

A DARK THRILLER!
By gayle pace
REVIEW
This book is definitely a page turner of a thriller. The pages don't turn fast enough to read this dark, very dark book. This is one of those thrillers that you just can't let go. It will have you on the edge of the seat and still there when you finish the book.
The book kind of gave me the chills. Snakes and plants, and insects that have names. A little Creepy. I don't really see the reason for all the names. This book is for those who are used to snakes, insects and creepy, crawlie things. I wonder if the writer had possibly experienced some of the dark places.
Either that or she has a very vivid imagination.

The story is about Liana Clymer who finds strength to face the terribly things in her life. She has been separated from her two grown sons because of a bad divorce. It took spunk to pick up and move to the edge of the swamp. She took her dog with her to the Florida panhandle. She was looking for happiness and a chance for a new life.
Lonely, she goes across the street to introduce herself to her neighbor.
Justin is a shy, timid teenager who seems nice enough but the Uncle Steve who's watching NASCAR appears evil and mean. She sees no women to become friends with so she turns to leave. Just as she did, a commercial came on TV. Justin had been kidnapped several years ago.
She realizes too late that she's trapped, no way out. She is held captive by a psychopath who thinks that abuse is the only way of life. I'm sure that murder meant nothing to him.
O.K., this would have been alright years ago, but these days, introducing yourself to strangers in their home is looking for trouble. The story is a narrative woven in with other narratives. Lianna's is a very brutal and evil one.
The book tells how with courage and faith you can keep yourself alive as Lianna did. You can also help others in the process with that strength. Liana struggles not only for herself but for Justin, the young man she's learned to care about. She's finding a bond with Justin that she just never found with her own sons.
The author, Ms. Springer wrote a realistic tale of exactly what happens every day. Children and women, mostly are abducted and held against their will. This story told of reality. It could happen to anyone, and it does. Although the story is a dark mystery thriller, it was written well and with such realism, it was as if you were closely related to the characters. One of the best thrillers I've read in a while. I would recommend this book to thriller and mystery lovers that like a little of the dark side. Beware darkness may be next door.

I would give this book 5 KEYS.
