Very practical guide for EAP projects

The book focuses on the practical steps necessary to perform successful EAP rather than on theoretical concepts and is therefore useful as a guide in EAP projects. It aligns with the Zachman Framework for I.S. Architectures and that alignment is explained in the book. The forward was written by John Zachman and he gives it high marks (of course).

The book addresses the most difficult aspects of EAP--how to handle the political hurdles and human issues that can stop an EAP project dead in its tracks. In doing so, the author demonstrates keen insight and experience with technology projects in business. It's not just about those aspects, but they are included for the benefit of anyone going through an EAP process.

The book takes the logical approach of starting with the definition of the business according to its functions (business value chain), moving next to the high-level, conceptual definition of the data that is required by the business. It then uses that data model to define (not design) the conceptual application architecture and then, in turn, the conceptual technology architecture. There is a clear distinction between the conceptual architectures and the more concrete designs that occur at the lower levels of the Zachman Framework. The author makes a convincing argument that this high-level definition needs to be created before the lower-level designs or the efforts will fail to produce the desired results. Samples of reports, such as a Business Model and a Data Architecture report, are provided in the appendix. I highly recommend this book.

The Bible for Enteprise Architecture Planning!

This seminal book captures it all. I have used this book as an invaluable reference on enterprise architecture projects for NASA, EPA, FAA and the Marine Corps.

This book lays out the entire littany of everything an EA team needs to do to become effective. It is a complete planning methodology. Where the real value of the information in this book comes in is in diligently following and implementing its tenets and processes.

Most organizations fail in EA for one reason - they lack executive buy-in. If you have executive buy-in, then you have most likely succeeded in educating your leadership about the importance and the value of EA. Making it real and practical will be a by-product of executive buy-in which should also come packaged with adequate funding and resourcing.

Countless studies have shown that organizations that invest in EA and have a mature EA program reap the rewards. You would not build a skyscraper without a blueprint; why build an organization without one?

This book belongs in the library of every serious enterprise architect. Without it you are missing the essentials of this critical discipoline.

Excellent resource - but use with caution

I purchased this book with it was first published and it greatly influenced my thinking and has continued to do so to this day. There is a large caveat I want to share before continuing - be careful of the Zachman Framework because if you do base your enterprise architecture on it you will soon discover that making changes is a tedious process that ripples across the matrix. That said, I continue to believe in the basic concepts and components of the framework, and I also think that it is an excellent way to gain a view of an enterprise when you are attempting to model it.
Caveat aside, the techniques and many of the elements of the framework provided in this book are invaluable to creating any enterprise framework or initiating and managing a process improvement program. While Chapter 1 describes enterprise architecture planning in the context of the Zachman Framework, all of the subsequent chapters can be applied to any framework, which what makes this book as valuable today as it was a decade ago. Specifically, Chapter 3 (Planning), 5 (Enterprise Survey), 8 (Application Architecture), and 10 (Implementation Plan) are among the best of the best practices for approaching any project that is enterprise-wide in scope. For that reason I continue to keep my worn copy of this book nearby as a reference.
Despite my views on the Zachman Framework and some of its limitations and challenges, you may not have a choice - if you are on a team that is refactoring your enterprise in accordance with the Zachman Framework I recommend that you visit the Zachman Institute (see ASIN B00016NEXI) and augment the decade old material in this book with the up-to-date content available on that site.
If you are still in the exploratory stage and are considering this book because you want to learn more about either the Zachman Framework or EAP I recommend that you not only purchase this book (for the reasons cited above), but that you also read "How to Survive in the Jungle of Enterprise Architecture Framework: Creating or Choosing an Enterprise Architecture Framework" (ASIN 141201607X).

Hallelujah for Hallelujah Hats!

Being a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent of our Sunday School, I have been able to use Hallelujah Hats in building my curriculum, in the Sunday morning classroom, and summer Bible School.The kids love to wear the hats and the parents love to see them on their children. The most important things about Hallelujah Hats is that the children love their crafts when they are finished and are able to understand the Bible story through the concrete use of crafts. This book has been a great help in sharing Christ's word with the children.

Binding is a problem

This is a great book, with lots of songs, large print, and good chording. But the binding on the copy I received made it impossible to play. I had to take it to a print shop, have them cut the binding and put on a spiral binding. Now the book is close to perfect, as it lies flat, something it wouldn't do originally. As long as I'm nit-picking, I have one other complaint. The key signature is only given on the first line of each song, rather than an all lines, as is customary on most such volumes.

Love this book!!

As a semipro guitarist and vocalist, I have used this book as the authority when I want to do one of the old standards. I have the 'Just Jazz' version also, but this one has more recognizable tunes if you're not doing a jazz gig per se. I first bought the Bb edition for a few bucks at a defunct music store, but I gave it to a trumpet player friend who loves it. I ordered a used C edition on Amazon from one of their many fine vendors, and received it timely and in almost perfect condition. I am really digging not having to transpose anymore!

Editions of Blake's poetry which as an artist and printer he frequently engraved and published himself most often fail to reproduce his integral illustrations, or do so in poor enough quality as to negate the effort. This Complete edition from the Blake Trust, published last year in a Thames and Hudson hardback edition that is now out of print, should replace the b&w-only Dover edition (but not David V. Erdman's commentary therein, or his reading text The Complete Poetry and Prose of William Blake) for any reader. The 366 crisp color and 30 b&w reproductions here, culled from the scholarly Princeton University Press six-volume annotated set, are little short of a revelation, giving us Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, America, Milton, Jerusalem and the rest of the Blake canon in a form acceptably close, as Binder's introduction makes clear, to the way Blake wanted us to see them. Many of these works are currently hanging in a special Blake exhibition the largest ever at the Met in New York, for which the Abrams book serves as an informative and revealing catalogue. Hamlyn, a senior curator at London's Tate (where the exhibition originated), and the University of York's Phillips present prints, drawings, paintings, selections from Blake's own illuminated books and other relevant materials, such as snapshots from Blake's marvelous editions of Edward Young's Night Thoughts and Thomas Gray's Poems. Both the words & vision of a prophetic soul on fire

While many people are familiar with William Blake's poetry, if only through the handful of commonly anthologized short poems from grade school & high school English classes, this is how his work was meant to be experienced: the poetry in union with the art, creating a vision far greater & more deeply moving than the sum of its already impressive parts. The words literally flow, twine, blossom in vivid & startling color, woven into the intricate, symbolic artwork. There aren't enough superlatives for this edition, which enables everyone to finally see & feel the Universe as Blake did: ablaze with power, wonder, beauty, horrors, and the godlike beings of the human psyche, titantic aspects transcending any neat, pre-packaged psychological or symbolic labels. For anyone wanting insight into the soul of Western civilization over the past few centuries, the soul in which we all struggle to find meaning & purpose now, this volume is absolutely essential. Most highly recommended!

Beautiful and powerful

This book brings the words and images of Blake to brilliant life. The volume is gorgeous, and the colors extremely rich. Having read Blake's poetry in un-illuminated format before, I now am even more appreciative of the value of seeing the work as Blake originally intended. Blake is a marvelous poet and artist, and this collection of his illuminated work is a marvelous book.

To Create a Little Flower is the Labour of Ages

Valuable things are not easy; easy things are not valuable. I don't know if that's a quotation from the Tao-Te Ching, but it ought to be. William Blake's longer poems, the so-called Prophetic Books, are legendary in their difficulty. Each of the two great epics, "Milton" and "Jerusalem", is a world in itself, taking years or decades to explore. Everyone who has made the effort considers it time well spent.

Blake wasn't shy about the importance of his own work. In a letter he described "Milton" as "the Grandest Poem this World Contains". But these immense, unique hand-engraved, hand-coloured cosmic-spiritual epics found no buyers in Blake's own lifetime. Only one coloured copy of "Jerusalem" is known to exist.

The Illuminated Books have been reproduced in colour before, but this is the first time all the plates have been printed full-size in a single book. Blake is fascinating even in black-and-white, but to read these books in the form intended means entering a new world. By depicting spiritual principles as People, Blake shows us the meaning of all ancient gods.

After the lyrics of the "Songs of Innocence and "Songs of Experience", the best place to start is the "Book of Thel", then the "Visions of the Daughters of Albion". When reading the long books, a plain text copy of the "Complete Poems" will come in handy: difficulty in reading Blake's graceful orange script for "Jerusalem" may be one difficulty too many. The remaining shorter books, with their anguished mythical narratives, rely more than the others on their illustrations, printed as if with fire, rust and soot: images of an age of Revolution.

Blake's aim was nothing less than "to open the immortal Eyes/ Of Man into the Worlds of Thought, into Eternity/ Ever expanding in the Bosom of God, the Human Imagination". Astonishingly this is not exaggeration nor plain craziness: he can actually do this.
If a book I admire gets five stars, this one deserves fifteen. It's a marvel, a rectangular treasure, one of the most precious books ever printed.

After three years of intense labor, Smith completed two handmade folio-sized maquettes to send to publishers. With 380 pages and 450 images, The Big Book was universally rejected as unviable and non-commercial, and it was never published.

Now, five decades later, a facsimile of W. Eugene Smith’s The Big Book, which is part of the Smith Archive at the Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at the University of Arizona, is in print for the first time. Accompanying the facsimile is a supporting volume with a foreword by Dr. Katherine Martinez, Director of CCP; an introduction by William S. Johnson, who arranged Smith’s archive at CCP; an essay by the renowned Swiss critic John Berger; notes on the Smith Collection at CCP by archivist Leslie Squyres and Jennifer Jae Gutierrez; “The Walk to Paradise Garden,” by W. Eugene Smith; and an appendix that maps Smith’s complete layout with titles, dates, and reproductions of each image from original prints. The Big Book is an essential primary source document for the study of both the history of photography and the history of the photobook. This set, in slipcase, will likely be the most comprehensive catalogue of W. Eugene Smith’s work ever published.

About the Author
Born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1918, W. Eugene Smith was a combat photographer during World War II, and worked for" Life "magazine during the 1940s and 1950s, producing more than fifty photo-essays. In the early 1970s, he photographed in Minamata, Japan, a small village affected by industrial mercury poisoning.
Jim Hughes, former editor of" Camera Arts," the "Photography Annual" and" Camera 35," is the author of "W. Eugene Smith: Shadow & Substance,"" Ernst Haas in Black and White," and "The Birth of a Century."

Not really what I was expecting

As a admirer of Eugene Smith's work (having collected many of his books and one of his portfolios) and courage, I was quite looking forward to this book. It is huge. The two volumes are just a facsimile of the original scrapbook, but not remade from the original photographs. The original scrapbook which was really a photocopy of the time to show potential publishers. So, the quality to say the least is accurate based on the quality and age of the pieces, is poor. The third volume which consists of a few short essays and a typed letter from Smith himself, is fascinating, and the reproductions from the contact sheets of the original photos in the two volumes is of much higher quality. For the money I should have probably passed!

These books should never have been published. Do not purchase.

These books should never have been published. Gene Smith was a master craftsman who made many significant sacrifices in an effort to control his work. I am sure the effort to show his thought process in forming the "big book" was done with good intentions. However, the result is a disaster, the absolute horrendous reproduction, the minimal text to help provide context, make this an embarrassment for all involved. I am returning my copy. The University of Texas should recall and destroy any remaining copies. If Gene were to see this he would be turning over in his grave.

Don't expect beautiful photos

This book is a reproduction of a book Smith had assembled in the early 1960s for a retrospective of his life's work. The book was a pasted up scrapbook of photocopies of his original prints. It was created in an unsuccessful attempt to find a publisher for this book. Photocopies at the time were not very good quality and they have degenerated badly over the years. Volume three is the most interesting book in this set because it has a few quality reproductions from original Smith prints and it has high quality thumbnail size reproductions of original prints from each of the photos in the first two volumes. I just wish these books were reproductions of original prints arranged and ordered as they were in Smith's original "Big Book". As it is this book is of historical interest to people studying Smith but not so interesting to those that want to admire his work.

Staples should win awards for her artwork

After a brief dip in the writing (but not the art), this volume returns Saga to its rightful place in the 5-star comics hierarchy. We are over five years past the start of the story - after a period of separation, the nuclear family has been reunited. Hazel is 5 years old. War, death, constant movement, betrayal, and bad decisions (so really, regret) are the thematic cornerstones of this series. That holds true for volume 7 as well.

Ms. Staples has done a fantastic job in the artwork in every volume of this series. She draws the various alien bodies adroitly. She does a nice job constructing worlds, but her strength is in facial expressions and the emotions that she wishes them to convey. The art is beautifully colored.

In interviews, Mr. Vaughan said he wrote these series partly for his wife, who had a hard time following comic stories and the movement of panels (Saga is very easy to follow, so is a good book for new comic readers to pick up (though it is for mature audiences due to language, nudity and violence). Now 40, Mr. Vaughan is using Saga to explore couple and family dynamics. These include communication (including breakdowns and fights), loss, regret, loyalty, passion, anxiety, and obligation. The topics he is covering now would not be covered by a 25 year old writer. He is allowing the experience of life to alter what he writes about. Bravo.

Dark, grim, but good

I think the superlatives surrounding this comic are probably as well deserved as ever. The humor, art, and diversity of characters continues to keep this book at the top of the ranks.

My complaint for this book, even more so than previous volumes, is the sledgehammer of personal politics that the author bashes over your head at every opportunity. The analogies to global politics and social issues are so thinly veiled that he might as well have a talk show on cable TV. having said that, if you agree with his world view, I'm sure that this comic is the best thing in the universe.

As far as this volume is concerned, I enjoyed the march towards an inevitable conlusion: the more characters you introduce, the more you must eventually cull. I wasn't sold on Rogue One until the last fifteen minutes of that movie. Similarly, I didn't know how much I liked this story arc until the last couple pages and then I was satisfied with the direction we went with these issues. The last volume seemed to almost have had a natural conclusion for the book and this volume managed to wrap an entire story in its pages and yet set up possibilities for the future.

Saga 7 is a return to form for one of the best stories going in comics today.

Though darker than previous installments, Saga 7 never loses the humor or inventiveness that make the series so special.

My only nitpick is that the themes and issues felt a bit more news-of-the-day than previous installments, at times feeling like Vaughan crafted the story solely to serve the metaphor than let the metaphor serve the story. But Vaughan navigates those choppy waters with aplomb, and it makes for a story that seems to have more bite, than some of the previous trades which felt lackadaisical in places. It's a give and take I can take.

Can't wait for the next one.

AN ENTIRELY NEW AND GROUNDBREAKING STYLE OF UNDERGRADUATE LAW TEXT BOOK FOR THE LAW OF TORTS USING INTERACTIVE MATERIALS

As Chris Turner says in the fourth edition of this excellent ‘Unlocking The Law’ series from Routledge, “a study of the law of torts can prove fascinating because it is really all about people, the problems that they have and the ways that these might be overcome in law”.

What Turner sets out in his excellent text book is a formidable explanation of the subject of Torts in easily understandable terms for what can be a difficult area of law for many to study (and teach) although it may look superficially easy! He describes Tort Law as covering civil wrongs so the topics areas vary widely “in their content and context from basic negligence actions for motoring accidents, through assaults encountered in sporting activities to the interference of problem neighbours”.

As with all the Routledge text books, this particular title is probably the best on the market as an introduction to the way in which “the law of torts” operates in England and Wales and the ‘self-testing’ throughout with the various activities will assist the student with a measure of progress as the course develops. We also consider that this book has a much wider potential readership than undergraduates or professionals and is for anyone interested in the development of this topical law area.

One of the main reasons why we feel that the Routledge series of legal textbooks to be of outstanding value both in terms of cost and in content is the way in which their authors (all legal experts) explain substantive legal issues in such a readable fashion.

For both tutors and students, a decision on which textbook or revision book to use is always difficult but it is clear to us from the feedback we have received from students that the Routledge texts lead the legal field. Many of their titles also have excellent links to websites sometimes marked as ‘companion websites’ which also add much assistance to the hard-pressed learner and is a great additional tool for all.

We would also say that the formats used by Routledge for their books are very much of a mainstream formula for legal texts which eases the student into methods of legal reasoning for those just beginning their legal studies and for all undergraduates: they certainly helped us with our preparation so do ensure you look very carefully at all the titles they have on offer!

For the ‘Unlocking’ series, Routledge use a number of special features: aims and objectives at the start of each chapter; key facts charts to consolidate knowledge; diagrams to aid learning; summaries to help check an understanding of each chapter; problem questions with guidance on answering; self-testing and a glossary of legal terminology.

For us reviewing the book, the companion website is an innovation! Therefore, do look at the features at the beginning of the book which will assist with your learning and engagement with the subject matter.

There is much food for thought throughout this excellent undergraduate primer on where we are and where we are going with the issue of Tort Law in the 21st century.

This book covers all the main topic areas on undergraduate and professional law syllabuses and it provides a full understanding of each with supporting resources from the ‘unlockingthelaw.co.uk’ website which will give the student an indispensable foundation of understanding of the subject.
