Great, accessible explanations

This book provides an exceptional overview of the logic and rational behind common procedures used to interpret ecological data. It goes into explanatory detail that many statistics and more modern methods books skip over. Even though computers can do all of these analyses in seconds, understanding the principles outlined in this book is critical to actually making sense of what the outputs mean and the implications of results for your system of study.

I am appalled at how Amazon.com thinks it can charge such a ludicrous price for the Kindle edition, though, seriously? I find it a bit offensive actually. Use your library or buy it used.

Understanding Multivariate Statistics

Many multivariate statistical books emphasize calculations and examples, withour providing much understanding of the linear algebra underneath, and many others are high-level mathematics texts. Striking the right balance is difficult. In my experience, Pielou's book is the best in this sense. If you would like to get an entry-level understanding of what classification and ordination methods do, I mean, the maths behind, without getting all the way into proving theorems, this is a great book.

The ramifications of the legal meanings of property affect our everyday life and most basic rights. Conservative thinkers such as Richard Epstein and others have argued for a purely economic and individualistic understanding of property, calling into question, for example, the validity of antidiscrimination laws. The work of Margaret Jane Radin, centering on the relation of property to one's personhood, has emerged as a powerful alternative for those dissatisfied with such approaches. Radin's liberal personality theory of property is based upon the idea that people possess certain objects that are almost a part of themselves in a constitutive sense - a home or a wedding ring for example - while other objects have no such meaning and are readily replaceable. In several now classic essays, she offers a compelling argument that the law should take into account the nonmonetary personal values attached to property. Indeed, the more personal a property right is, the more weight the law should give to it. Professor Radin shows how this perspective often has been implicit in the connections that courts and commentators have found between property and privacy or between property and liberty. Going beyond pure theory, she applies her ideas to practical problems by examining residential rent control and other aspects of the landlord-tenant relationship, and the controversial issue of government's "taking" of private property. Her analyses reflect a philosophical pragmatism which focuses on the situated, and often second-best, working out of liberal ideological commitments in actual practice. In her concluding essay Radin explores how the meaning we attach to property is profoundly shaped by thediscourse in which we conceive of it. Responding to the law-and-economics analysis of rape, she considers how the rhetoric of cost-benefit analysis trivializes and degrades women's interest in bodily integrity, even as it purports to protect it. Her critique returns the reader to one of the volume's central issues: Are some things so personal that they should not really be considered property at all? Reinterpreting Property makes a major contribution toward redefining and humanizing the way our society conceives of property and, ultimately, itself.

An Absolute Must-Read

Frank Worrall is a prolific author that knows the game of football. His biographies on Luis Suarez, Gareth Bale, Ryan Giggs, and Chicharito are some of the best you’ll find when it comes to the beautiful game. He does great work for John Blake Publishing time in and time out.

But we have to say that his most recent offering, Jamie Vardy: The Boy from Nowhere, is at a whole new level and is perhaps his greatest work.

The story of Jamie Vardy is a popular one these days, but this one is a bit different and a whole lot better. A lot of time is spent on Vardy’s time in non-league and that experience clearly made him the player he is today. There is also a great discussion of the disappointment he faced as a youth when he was turned away by his local club; we’re sure that Sheffield Wednesday would want him today if given a second chance.

His story is so inspirational, very, very few non-league players make it to the Champions League or the English national team, but Jamie Vardy did and did so against all the odds. He’s an example for others to follow, someone who has overcome a life’s worth of obstacles to reach the peak of professional and international football.

This book also points out his indiscretions, doesn’t shove them under the rug so to speak. Those issues, which are isolated and in the past, make up just another set of obstacles. Vardy has since put the negativity behind him and is looking toward the future, his and the future for those like him. His latest project, the V9 Academy, gives back to the sport and gives other talented footballers the chance to make it big, Jamie Vardy big.

If you want to learn about Vardy and his background and career, then this is the book for you. You don’t have to wait for his autobiography to come out in October; you can simply enjoy this one now.

It’s a great story of doing the unexpected, along the lines of Horatio Alger or Rocky. I’m glad that Worrall and John Blake teamed up for this one. It is a must-read because it captures the spirit and journey of Jamie Vardy, the boy from nowhere that made it big everywhere.

All We've Come to Expect from MacArthur

It seems to me that John MacArthur writes books in two broad categories. The first is books that often address cultural issues or specific issues within the church. This includes books like Hard to Believe or Ashamed of the Gospel. The other category is books that are drawn from sermons series he preaches to his congregation at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California. The Fulfilled Family, the lastest in a long line of MacArthur's books, falls squarely in the second category. This book began as a series of sermons expositing Ephesians 5. It is no more and no less than what we have come to expect of John MacArthur - well-written, deep, challenging, and above all else, firmly biblical.

The book is divided into five chapters of roughly equal length. There is one chapter for each of the family, the wife, the husband, the child and the parents. Following the theme of the book, each chapter exposits a portion of the fifth chapter of Ephesians and other parallel texts.

The theme of the book is the importance of mutual submission. This is not the mutual submission taught by those who would have us believe in the equality of roles between men and women, but the mutual submission exemplified by Christ Himself. Husband, wife and children are all called to be submissive to one another, being clothed in humility. This is the very core of Christlike character. "As Christians, this is the mentality that should govern all our relationships: 'In lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests,but also for the interest of others' (Phil.2:3-4)" (page 10).

This theme pervades each chapter as MacArthur calls for wives to submit to their husbands, for husbands to honor their wives, for children to respect their parents and for parents to love their children. Ultimately a family can only be a fulfilled family by following God's divine plan for family life.

A short book, at only 126 pages, The Fulfilled Family provides a challenge for any believer. After all, every one of us is either a husband, a wife or a child. It is the type of book that makes an ideal gift. While there are more thorough books on the family (including some written by John MacArthur) this one does what it sets out to do - provide biblical wisdom to address the constant challenges facing the divine plan for the family. Needless to say, I recommend this book.

Excellent introduction to the Bible's direction on family life

This is an excellent overview of what the Bible has to say about the roles of husband, wife, children and parents. MacArthur has written more comprehesnive books on marriage and parenting which I have not read. If you are looking for a quick refresher or to begin to study this vital area of Christian life, you could hardly do better than this.

Content is typical MacArthur: excellent! I was disappointed in the size of the book...fairly small, however, it still is an excellent read for every Christian home. Will make an excellent gift to every family. I will definitely buy more for friends and young families.

About the Author

Dr. D. P. Mishra is a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, where he has been instrumental in establishing a combustion laboratory. His areas of research include combustion, computational fluid dynamics, and atomization. He is also an assistant editor for the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, Elsevier, USA, and serves as an editorial board member for several other international journals. He has been the recipient of several awards, including the Young Scientist Award, INSA-JSPS Fellowship, Sir Rajendranath Mookerjee Memorial Award, and Samanta Chadrasekhar Award. Dr. Mishra has six Indian patents and more than 178 research papers published in referred journals and conference proceedings. He has authored two textbooks titled Fundamentals of Combustion, published by Prentice Hall of India, and Engineering Thermodynamics, published by Cengage India Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi.

This is a very good book. It contains vital information that all believers should know.
