Great, accessible explanations

This book provides an exceptional overview of the logic and rational behind common procedures used to interpret ecological data. It goes into explanatory detail that many statistics and more modern methods books skip over. Even though computers can do all of these analyses in seconds, understanding the principles outlined in this book is critical to actually making sense of what the outputs mean and the implications of results for your system of study.
I am appalled at how Amazon.com thinks it can charge such a ludicrous price for the Kindle edition, though, seriously? I find it a bit offensive actually. Use your library or buy it used.

Understanding Multivariate Statistics

Many multivariate statistical books emphasize calculations and examples, withour providing much understanding of the linear algebra underneath, and many others are high-level mathematics texts. Striking the right balance is difficult. In my experience, Pielou's book is the best in this sense. If you would like to get an entry-level understanding of what classification and ordination methods do, I mean, the maths behind, without getting all the way into proving theorems, this is a great book.
