Few poets of Western America fill the “organic intellectual” role better than David Lee. His poetry is the real deal when it comes to recording hilariously insightful—and linguistically accurate—observations of rural culture and America at large while using a host of astute literary allusions and techniques. Imagine Robert Frost simultaneously channeling Will Rogers and Ezra Pound. Imagine Chaucer with a twang. Last Call is bloody brilliant and wickedly witty.

Review
"If we were a civilized nation, we would declare David Lee a national treasure." —Sam Hamill, cofounding editor, Copper Canyon Press, and founder, Poets Against the War
"If there’s a better poetry book anywhere, it won’t be on our planet." —Eleanor Wilner, MacArthur Fellow and author, The Girl with Bees in Her Hair and Tourist in Hell
"Poignant, bittersweet, down-home, and often funny as hell, Lee writes like a prairie Bukowski—achingly honest and unflinching when it comes to the daily chore of life." —Bill Minutaglio, author, Molly Ivins: A Rebel Life and Dallas 1963
"Last Call is David Lee’s wonderful tribute to his friend and fellow poet Bill Kloefkorn, a man who was bigger than life. There’s everything here. It makes me think of being under the canvas of some great circus tent where Mark Twain is ringmaster, watching spellbound as he offers up this astonishing array of entertainments: miracles, visions, visitations, hard lessons, riffs of talk, fabulous instances of word play, and righteous scorn set alongside rips of great good humor, tall stories, sad stories, and moments of deep affection—all of it heightened by David Lee’s inimitable skill with colloquial language. This is just a transcendent book." —Kent Haruf, author, Benediction
"Lee is an attentive poet with a sharp ear for idiom and colloquial speech. Lee is a master story-teller and he always puts his sympathy with the poem and the people who inhabit them, and ultimately, he trusts the voice of his friend who guided his writing. Last Call is both elegy and celebration, but it is more than that. Last Call is in fact David Lee collaborating with his dear friend, William Kloefkorn, one last time. Lee is both poet and translator for his friend and we are the beneficiary of his diligence." —Justin Evans, themuseumofamericana.wordpress.com
"David Lee’s latest collection of poetry, Last Call (WingsPress, 2014), is a natural and honest pleasure to read. It is like an afternoon at an old watering hole with your buddies elbowed up all along the whiskey-stained oak, heels hooked in the bar foot rest, and the former poet laureate of Utah, Mr. Lee himself, serving up the day’s oratory libations . . . . These poems tell a story in sun-struck verse that is irreverent, ribald, and elegant." —Larry Menlove, 15 Bytes

Last Call by David Lee
By Donna L. Tedd
Great poetic literature. Best living poet today. Universal emotions in Last Call can touch even those of us fighting to stay emotionally alive after a lifetime of passionately living. . .then that final unexpected death of a loved one etc. why risk again. . . Like all great literature readers will find will hear and feel what they need. You may hear echoes of other great poets particularly the recently deceased William Kloefkorn but as David Lee says. . .see you sooner than later to this great man. . .poet. . .beloved friend. . .mentor David Lees own voice comes through loud and clear and beautifully American yet universally emphathic. I am a western American yet when I shared these poems particularly Pain and Last Call with my Hungarian friends in Hungary it was a touching mutually understanding moment.
