About the Author
John Sinkankas (Bs. Ed., William Paterson College of New Jersey; Ph.D. Honoris Causa) is a retired U.S. Navy captain. He is a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America and is the first recipient of the Carnegie Mineralogical Award (1988) of the Carnegie Natural History Museum, Pittsburgh. He has written seven books on gems and related subjects; his first work, Gem Cutting, now in its third edition, was chosen by the USSR as an instruction manual and published in Moscow in a Russian translation in 1989.

About the Author

David Lee�was named Utah's first Poet Laureate in 1997, and he has received the Mountains & Plains Booksellers Award in Poetry, the Western States Book Award in Poetry,�and the Utah Governor's Award for lifetime achievement.�He was listed among Utah's top 12 writers of all time by the Utah Endowment for the Humanities. He is the author of 20 books of poetry, including So Quietly the Earth,�which was selected for the New York Public Library's annual Books to Remember list in 2004; Moments of Delicate Balance, a joint collection with Nebraska Poet Laureate William Kloefkorn; My Town; and Porcine Canticles. Great poetic literature. Best living poet today. Universal emotions in Last Call can touch even those of us fighting to stay emotionally alive after a lifetime of passionately living. . .then that final unexpected death of a loved one etc. why risk again. . . Like all great literature readers will find will hear and feel what they need. You may hear echoes of other great poets particularly the recently deceased William Kloefkorn but as David Lee says. . .see you sooner than later to this great man. . .poet. . .beloved friend. . .mentor David Lees own voice comes through loud and clear and beautifully American yet universally emphathic. I am a western American yet when I shared these poems particularly Pain and Last Call with my Hungarian friends in Hungary it was a touching mutually understanding moment.

Dom Chautard keenly outlines the basic stages of spiritual life and gives specific direction in developing a rich interior life, which he assures the reader is "the shortest path to Heaven."

A Call to Perfection

This book is just beautiful. It is the book that was kept handy at the bedside of Pope Saint Pius X. It is a powerful reminder of the absolutely essential role that prayer plays in apostolic activity and the fruitlessness and barrenness of any reliance upon our own self-sufficiency in apostolic work. This book really helped change my outlook on the active life, which is often sharply contrasted with the contemplative life. All action is for the sake of union with God. Contemplation is primary in the life of the Christian. We are all called, ultimately, to a perfection that leads to a union and contemplation of God in eternity, the beatific vision, where we shall see God "as He is." Prayer is a foretaste of this union. It is a sort of an imperfect participation in this union with God that we are privileged to partake in during this earthly life.

Far too many, however, turn this order on its head, and they see contemplation as something that they are too busy to partake in. These people rely upon their own skills and efforts rather than upon the grace of God. They think that if they just DO more, if they just expend more effort, things will work out. To do this, they may have to cut time out of their life of prayer. After all, isn't a life of prayer for the monks? This book shows how very wrong this view is.

This work is also a reminder to the non-Catholic who has wrongly understood the Catholic teaching on faith and works. The works of the Christian are done in God's grace. To bear fruit, they must be blessed by God's Sovereign Will. They are not done as though one would "earn" one's salvation. The Catholic Church has always condemned such an understanding. These works, while necessary, are a free response to His Grace. This book reminds us of this truth and calls us to purify our understanding so that we rely upon Him for all things. As Saint Augustine quoted Scripture in his Anti-Pelagian writings, "What have you that you have not received?" The clear answer is nothing. We were created from nothing, and were it not for God's will, we would return to nothing. We have nothing of which to boast, and we must rely upon Him for all things, and even for the gift of prayer and the gift of works, as Saint Paul told us: "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."

This book, perhaps more than any other that I have read outside of the Holy Scripture, reminds us: "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The social, political, and journalistic cultures of each woman’s era are also explored to provide context for the women’s media coverage. The findings illustrate that the press has used a variety of discursive strategies to delegitimize the candidacies of women politicians throughout history, which might have contributed to negative voter attitudes toward women in politics. Gendered stereotypes, gendered news frames, and double binds utilized in news coverage served to protect a male-dominated status quo. Yet a significant finding in Palin’s coverage indicates that gender bias in news coverage is increasingly facing criticism, suggesting the tide may finally be turning in favor of more equalized discourse.
