Summarizes Text Analytics Well

This book explains text analytics from a high level. There are a decent number of techniques explaining ways of looking at text. Throughout the book are mentions of different tools you can use ranging from free to enterprise level tools.

There are also a number of graphs in the book showing the output of results from text analytic tools. I would have like to see more "practical" examples though of how a business should be using these tools. I understand from the book the techniques we have now are not sufficient in many cases.

Some of the pictures in the book appeared to be totally random and held little relevance to text. I was wondering why the author placed them there.

The writing style is pretty informal which works well for this book. Overall this book is a great place to start for learning about text analytics. If your looking for more advanced cases, or business applications you may need to look elsewhere.

Explains Text Analytics in simple english

As a Voice of customer and Text analytics practitioner I have a little bit of background in this field and I found the book really helpful in explaining the text analytics field from a practical point of view .
Most of the concepts which may usually be too math oriented or hard to understand are explained in general English. I specially like the chapter on Bayesian analysis which had eluded me as a tool so far but the book does a good job in explaining the use and power of the algorithm.
Text is everywhere and aggregating and analyzing text remains one of the most valuable frontier for Enterprise Software and for general public alike.

I like it a lot

Steven Struhl has an incredible knack for demystifying complex analyses and analytic software, and making it accessible to those who are interested in what it does without delving too deeply into the incomprehensible elements of how it works.

In his new book, Dr. Struhl takes on text analytics. I found the chapter on Bayes Nets particularly useful. In it he show, quite convincingly that, in some cases, they do a much better job with text than other predictive methods. He provides a story through crystal-clear examples that are immediately interesting and easy to follow.

Great book

I had to use this textbook for my pathophysiology class in nursing school. It is by far one of the most useful textbooks I have, and I will not be selling it back. Even through paramedic school, my paramedic textbook was lacking some basic explanations on the patho of diseases and injuries and this book really filled in the gaps. I only wish I had it 3 years ago in paramedic classes. It uses simple explanations, pictures, and has a great website to accompany it. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a background in pathophysiology, regardless of their field.

Not helpful to me

For me, the Gould textbook is unnecessarily difficult to use. I am surprised that so many people like it. It is on the whole too simplified, so you are usually stymied when you want the real physiological account of a pathology. The Glossary is incomplete (it is only 8 pages of large type) and the explanatrions are dumbed down so much they confuse me even more. When I look up a difficult term, half the time there's no entry at all. The illustrations often contain far more detail than is explained in the text, and are sometimes very confusing and misleading. For example, the discussion of changes in blood gas with respiratory acidosis sounds as though there is always more H2CO3 produced in acidosis -- this is just wrong, and the illustration contradicts itself, too. (It says "Kidneys increase serum bicarbonate" but the sample numbers show a decrease!) The text is also often unclear. For example, the distinction between Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is very poorly explained, in my opinion. The online materials are also very dumbed down. I happen to have bought Huether's Understanding Pathophysiology for the same class at a different college, and I think the Huether text is far, far better. It has much more detailed physiological explanations. The online materials for the Huether text are also mch more detailed and thorough. For what it's worth, I am a straight-A science student with a Ph.D. in another field.

A great book with some publisher generated anchors!

This is a great book and should be widely available as a reference/textbook. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get a copy of the book and the book is ridiculously priced for a student (and therefore is unlikely to be purchased by a library). It's a shame that such a great piece of work isn't more easily purchased online or directly from the publisher. I've tried to buy a second copy of the book after finding the first in a book store and am still waiting for it to arrive after ordering the book two months ago.
I would ask the authors to demand, from the publisher, that this outstanding book be made more accessible.
As for the content of the book, the selection of topics and coverage are no less than outstanding. The authors will discuss a topic and then provide an example to illustrate how the topic is applied. Most, if not all, of the fundamental topics in digital communications are covered. Well documented references are provided if the reader desires more information than what's given in the book.

Best in-print textbook I'm aware of on basic digital communications

This textbook is very strong on Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) (Chapter 5) basic MLSD/Viterbi detection (Ch 7) Equalization (8 & 9) as well as continuous and and discrete-time PLLs (ch 14), and carrier and timing recovery (15 & 16). I feel the material about Error Control (12) is introductory and I haven't read the chapters on MIMO, and fading.

The text is very readable and the derivations are not too bad, meaning even though many are left as 'exercizes for the reader', there are answers in the back which if you miss a step you can kind of work backward and figure it out (note: not the problems at the back of the chapter just the in chapter exercizes)

I recommend this book unless you already have the 1st or 2nd edition already.

A good source of knowledge...very practical

Used at many universities such as Georgia Tech, and as reference as in Valencia Polytechnic University, this is a must read book for every engineer in the world of communications...later it will serve you as a great reference, a good volume for your library. Wish there were more book like this one!! Adeu!

A trip to the past

I had heard so much about this book that I had to have it. It is like a trip to the past when rifles and shooting were more experimental. I bought this book because I was interested in having a rifle modified into a Ackley Improved, but the book has much more information about shooting and reloading. An essential book for people that love shooting.

Researched back

The opinions in this book are backed with research. Not just the strongly expressed opinions you hear a lot of by others. Some the jury is still out, but it is the only firearms book that I have read that presents its research to back up the opinions expressed. Also, it leaves open some things for further discussion.

Best book available on hamstring healing, health, fitness

Consistent with other books by Johnson, the information is extremely well-documented, convincingly evidence-based, easy to understand, and hugely helpful. The scientific evidence supporting his information is both described and cited in the form of good quality research study reports listed in the end-notes. His book on Achilles tendonopathy moved me from unable to walk without severe pain to totally zero symptoms and extremely active, so I'm a fan. Although I'm not a medical or healing professional, it's my feeling that this book would also be useful for physical therapists, trainers, etc. at least as a reference or summary of the latest research. It and his other books are largely for people who are willing and able to do specific simple easy exercises at home and/or in a local gym. Although not difficult or time-consuming, it DOES require CONSISTENTLY following a regular schedule (not time of day, but "daily" "2 times/week, etc.) If you are unable to do this on your own or with your partner or family because of lack of self-discipline, then maybe instead of this book, driving to a physical therapy center every day and say "fix me" is right for you. I personally VERY MUCH prefer going with Jim Johnson and doing it with his book at home and in my local gym. Of course he seems to --- at least implicltly --- suggest that you go to a doctor for any injury to get it evaluated and diagnosed, and then the book can be used in combination with the doctor's recommendations. He doesn't mention (and it should be common sense) --- many people are chronically sleep-deprived, and lack of sleep in general would be a major impediment to any kind of healing.

This and Johnson's other books dramatically reduce suffering, increase level of functioning, and help to reduce health care costs generally.

Very helpful

Many people have experienced hamstring pain and/or injury at some point and this book is an excellent reference on the subject. I’m no expert on hamstrings but this guide is basically a detailed, step-by-step tool that you can use to help develop pain-free, injury-free hamstrings. Without giving away each of the actionable steps mentioned inside I did want to point out that I appreciated the detailed diagrams that summarized the information in an easy-to-read format. The author has included several detailed diagrams of the hamstring area as well to help you understand how that area operates and what muscles are involved. I also enjoyed the studies and statistics regarding hamstring pain and injury. Finally, I appreciated the list of supporting references at the end that supported the information that was presented which demonstrates that extensive research was involved during the writing of this book.

Overall I recommend this book to anybody who has or is currently experiencing hamstring pain or injury, perhaps especially for athletes or those who train or workout on a regular basis. This book is full of great information that can help you build up your foundation to help prevent pain and/or injury in the future

Need help with painful hamstrings? This is what you are looking for!

"Bulletproof your Hamstrings" works well both for people with injuries in their hamstring muscles and those who are looking to prevent beforehand.

In terms of the book itself, the layout is very easy to follow, and has simple, clear diagrams. I love that not only does the book show you exercises to try out, but explains what causes hamstring issues, why each exercise works, and lists every case study or research information to back it up with facts. The author explains the anatomy of the muscles and bones in a way even the most unknowledgeable person can follow, and the exercises are simple but effective that will help pretty much anyone looking to improve. It mentions another book based on back pain, too, which I definitely going to have to check out if that book is as helpful as this one.
