"A story of heroism and of touching romance in a time of fear and danger." ―USA Today
There are two voices intertwined in the narrative: those of Jack and Rochelle. Now and then they interrupt each other. This is the way they have told these stories for the past fifty years: side by side, listening intently each to the other, at the ready to speak up lest a single detail be lost. These stories are their lives―the testament of their survival and their love for each other. ―from the Preface by Lawrence Sutin
In this gripping memoir, Jack and Rochelle Sutin recount their struggle to survive the Holocaust as part of a band of partisans in the forests of Poland. Told through their son Lawrence, the book brings alive the reality of months spent hidden in a dank underground bunker unaware of the outside world. Jack and Rochelle is more than just an account of stark survival, however. It is also the tale of an almost impossible love affair that has lasted more than fifty years, and an eloquent reminder that history is made up of the often deeply moving details of individual lives.

From Publishers Weekly
Sutin (Divine Invasions: A Life of Philip K. Dick) crafted this Holocaust account from a series of interviews he conducted with his parents. Narrating alternately, Jack and Rochelle vividly describe how they, as Polish Jews, fled separately in 1942 from their respective ghettos, where they had been relocated by the Germans. Each hid in the woods; and, after harrowing encounters with anti-Semitic escaping Russian soldiers, Rochelle joined Jack's group of Jewish partisans. Although mere acquaintances before the outbreak of war, Jack and Rochelle became lovers and together fought in the resistance movement, enduring near-starvation, disease and the constant threat of capture by Germans and Poles. After the war, the Sutins married and emigrated to the U.S. An unsentimental and informative story. Photos not seen by PW.

From Booklist
Jack and Rochelle Sutin take turns narrating their harrowing story of the Holocaust, edited by their son, Larry, the author of Divine Invasions: The Life of Philip K. Dick. The couple first met briefly at a school dance in Stolpce, Poland, and then again in the winter of 1942^-43 in a woods after making separate escapes from Nazi ghetto labor camps. In the woods they joined a Jewish partisan group, lived in inhuman conditions, and fell in love. German troops, Polish police, and Russian partisans--who hated the Jews--all made their survival arduous. In the summer of 1943, they joined a much larger partisan group (about 300 fellow Jews), and that August the Germans sent 20,000 troops into the forest to put down the resistance. Jack and Rochelle escaped into the swamps and were eventually liberated by Russian forces. The story has a happy ending; the Sutins were married and in 1949 emigrated to the U.S. George Cohen

Insightful, poignant memoir of the Holocaust
By Kelley Ridings
I have spent a lifetime reading accounts of the Holocaust. This is a unique memoir since it is a joint recollection of a husband and wife telling their unique narrative of their personal and partnered lives as they fought for survival as Jewish partisans in World War 2 Poland. Their personal accounts captured the deep intensity of emotions of Jews fighting unimaginable horrors at the time -- the fear, the anger, the sense of profound loss, and a deep appreciation for having survived, all seen through a deep abiding love that Jack and Rochelle Sutin had for each other which brought focus to their quest to survive. This book more than most really captures how victims of the Holocaust especially can almost lose their sense of humanity in the face of unspeakable tragedy -- an experience common to so many in the Holocaust, yet so. movingly recounted in this book. This book has made me consider anew the lives of partisans as they struggled against the Nazis who overran their country, destroyed their homes and families, and viciously ripped away their sense of self. This book has offered me an additional lens through which to view this aspect of Holocaust history, and because of this, it has been a deeply rewarding and meaningful read.

Extremely interesting
By Sharon
Gave me a better understanding of the war and the politics. I knew of the horror, but never new about the Jewish partisans hiding in the forest. It is amazing what they suffered through and how they managed to avoid capture and stay alive. I liked that it was told in both Jack's voice and Rochelle's separately. I found the final chapter by their son hard to follow though.

How the Human Spirit can Conquer Almost Anything with Love, Determination, and Courage
By Barbara Cognetta
When WWII took place, I was just a baby so I never lived through any of this time period. Now that I am considerably older, I am curious to know about WWII and everything that happened during that important time in our country's and our world's history. The book "Jack and Rochelle: A Holocaust Story of Love" was beautiful and at the same time "heart wrenching". It was extremely difficult for me to imagine anyone living through those horrible times and actually surviving and raising a beautiful family. The horrors that Jack and Rochelle endured are almost beyond belief. The bravery of the group that they lived with in the forest for many years displayed great strength and courage and compassion for each other. Tom Brokaw called this generation "The Greatest Generation", and this book will tell you why that is true. Because of the advantages that the next generations after WWII had, I'm not sure these generations would be as strong in "body and mind" to endure what Jack and Rochelle had to. They are an inspiration to me.
