Another Grimwood classic.

Probably the least known of Ken Grimwood's six novels (maybe besides Two Plus Two which was written under the name of Alan Cochran).
It was more than two years ago when I read this but I remember it being based in Cajun country and it involved serious mind-control via /voodoo/drugs.

I love all Ken Grimwood's books, they are all a five-star rating as far as I'm concerned. I recall paying a lot of money for my copy of this. I think it was an
ex-library copy from the US and is in pretty good condition. I'm going to have another read of this soon to refresh my memory because I can't remember how it ends which is a good thing for a re-read.

All six Grimwood novels are stand alone books but I still read them in order of publication having bought them all in one go. It set me back quite a few quid, especially for his first four, but it was money well spent.

People have gotten used to paying just a few pounds/dollars for books nowadays, thanks to Kindle e-books, and many would baulk at paying the prices for the early Grimwood books. All I can say is I haven't regretted the outlay.

Practical Leadership Tools

This book is game changer if you want to grow in influence. Every leader must learn to challenge themselves and grow. However, to make your organization grow and become great, the leader must focus on helping others win. Everyone has the capacity for greatness, it is up the leader to draw it out. Most leadership books focus on the science of leading people and organizations. While this is necessary information, it does not always translate into influence. This is the chief difference with Terry's book. It is intensely practical, and doable. I highly recommend this to any leader who wants to not just make their organization great, but the people around them great!

About the Author
Gordon L Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He served in the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969-70 and subsequently in airborne infantry, long-range patrol and intelligence assignments until retiring after 26 years. He was a special operations forces scenario writer at the Joint Readiness Training Center for 12 years and is now a freelance writer, living in Texas. The author lives in Cypress, TX.

Stuffed with History

I believe I have read almost everything ever written about the 11th Airborne Division in WWII, and yet this book surprised me and taught me new things. The information about the physical training was especially eye-opening. This is not a suspense-filled page-turner, but if you want to know what life was like for paratroopers in training and at war, this is the book for you.

Should be called a .Net book instead

Don't get me wrong, the book was okay. However it was more about .Net and MS Visual Studio .Net than it was about C#. I think it lays a decent foundation. However I'm find myself looking for something with more substance on C#. In it's defense, .Net can be pretty confusing and you need to have a hold of it before you can use C# the way it is meant to be used.

Waste of money

This is a BAD book, if I ever saw one. Everything is extremely sketchy, and the logic in the examples given is so muddled, it's painful. It starts with pretty good, though, but quickly goes to complete garbage, designed to confuse you. I'm an experienced VB developer, I'd ashamed to produce the code that's in this book, and the explanations of the examples are outrageously incomplete. Don't buy this!

Best of the lot, so far

Once again, it seems like Wrox is rushing to be the first with a comprehensive work. Fortunately, this one is better than the book Introducing .Net. And, for sheer learning, it is the best book on C# on the market so far (still awaiting Inside C# from MSPress to see if they up the ante).
The first couple of chapters deal with very introductory level information. If you have been studying .Net, you will likely skim through these chapters. While there is some useful information, there are plenty of resources on this material.
The rest of the book breaks into C#. If you are a language purist, and good at reading material that is more like specs, you will likely find Eric Gunnerson's book more up your alley. For the rest of us, this tome is a far better option.
Of particular note is the fact that chapters have been thrown in on using COM and COM+ with .Net. As the help file is largely garbage on this, and experimentation is the way most of us are learning this, it is nice to have a runthrough of how to use legacy code (is it okay to call COM legacy now?) in our .Net apps.
The ASP.Net chapter gives enough information to get you started, but a few more chapters would have really added some meat to the book.
My personal favorite is the assemblies and manifests chapter, as the other C# books do very little to broach these subjects.
One thing I would like to see, once the technology has settled down (beta 2 is supposed to be feature complete), is a book on the .Net framework. I disagree that this book should have been the book to concentrate on that, but a bit more in depth traveling into the base classes would have been nice.
I am thankful that Wrox decided on four authors for this one, instead of the trend, as of late, of publishing yearbooks. It makes for a bit more consistent ride and less overlap of material from chapter to chapter. There are also fewer holes in this book than the Introducing .Net book.
If you want to get into C#, this is the book (at least as of February 2001). Once the technology is complete, all bets are off.

Excellent if you only need this part of the volume

The item was very helpful. It is only the first part of the whole edition: The electricity part, so if you are looking only for a part of the whole, this version will be the best option for you. Includes everything from practice problems and equations to answers on the back.

This text has made my semester hell!

The other reviews sum it all very nicely, this is a terrible physics text. Notice how heavily the number of one and two star reviews outweigh 3,4, and 5 star reviews. If you are a teacher, instructor, or professor, and use this text, you are a bad person. I just can't even express in words how bad everything is done. 80% of the time spent in this text is trying to figure out what went on in an EXAMPLE'S intermediate step.

Tipler - Dull & stiff

Generally a good book, if you just want to learn the formulas. The reasoning behind deriving the formulas and explaining physical concepts lacks depth and thorough explanation, so much of it is like "this is the way it is, so this leads to that". Tipler seems to be caught up with juggling the mathematical equations. This means that you will not grasp the ideas behind it all, and leaves you without the proper understanding to tackle the level III problems, as stated by so many of the other reviewers. Even though there exists a lot of examples, they still don't make up for the lack of profound explanations. One way to deal with it is to first read the corresponding chapter in Feynman Lectures On Physics and look at Tiplers examples, perhaps then you will be better off. So unfortuenately this is not the book that inspires you about the subject just dealth with, more it gives you the feeling of "phew! I got past this part", this I consider is the most critical point of all books, they should be more than a reference manual, they should inspire and exite you about the subject.

Colorado-based cross-country runner Lear follows the University of Colorado cross-country team, the Buffaloes, through its 1998 season, one with many high points but also marked by the tragic death of one of its team members in a bike accident. The University of Colorado's cross-country program is one of the best in the country and, unlike most major cross-country powers, relies mainly on locally born athletes. The book minutely details the training and coaching techniques used to produce a team that is a constant contender for the NCAA championship. At times, the author provides almost too much detail, but the reader must marvel at the dedication and self-motivation of these young men as they run more than 100 miles a week for nearly seven months. In 1998, Colorado won the individual NCAA cross-country championship and finished third in the team competition. As inside as inside gets

Full disclosure, I'm a big running fan. I don't think one need be such, though, to enjoy this book. Cross-country is a strange mix of individual ambition and team cohesiveness, and here in the University of Colorado is an embedded account of a season in which both one runner and the team have a chance to be the best in the country. To add to the drama, the team has to recover--psychically and athletically--from a mid-season tragedy that is rare in the sports realm. This as inside an inside account as one can get for a college sports team, and it isn't a series of sugar-coated motivational posters like some of the "inside" accounts of college football and basketball teams I've read. The writer himself was a phenomenal runner, which must have helped him gain access.

Makes me wish I would've tried out for cross

I enjoyed this book. It really painted a picture of what it might be like to participate in an elite collegiate running program. The workouts seem brutal with the team riding on the edge of greatness and injury. The author does a good job portraying the thoughts of the runners and coach as the season progresses. I wish there would've been more insight to the activities of the team outside of practices and races. Some of the runners allude to the fact that their days consist of running, studying, eating and sleeping. Maybe they did have very monotonous schedules, but I remember the guys on the cross team at my college and they were pretty crazy. Then again, they weren't nearly on the same level as these guys. Overall, it's well written and is a great example of the success that can come from dedication.

A good solid book about a year in the life of a perennial winning cross country team

A good diary of several months in the life of an elite team leading up to NCAA finals. Great experience of the events that can affect a team and a great story of how much things can change in just a few months time in the world of elite runners. Author didn't seem to impart a great deal of running knowledge, and it would be great if more information were offered about cross country strategy and tactics.
