About the Author
Rick Lewis has been performing professionally since the age of eight, appearing in television commercials and a dinner theater production of the musical stage play, Mame. Hooked by these early experiences in front of audiences Rick continued to work professionally as an actor, dancer, acrobat, and musical theater performer until he was in his early twenties. He then attended Webster University's renowned theater arts program. He left Webster to join the cast of a Broadway touring production of the hit musical Barnum, with which he traveled internationally for a nine-month period, playing in over 70 cities.
It was Rick's experience with Barnum that led him to build his own solo physical comedy act, incorporating his skills in theater and circus arts with his background in dance and athletics.
At the same time, a strong interest in personal growth led Rick to begin training as a personal development coach under the guidance of his own mentor. In time, he began to weave his comedic skills and growing experience as a personal growth trainer into a fully developed program that uses comedy and theater to help educate, motivate, and inspire individuals and groups to achieve greater clarity, professionalism, and satisfaction in their business and personal lives.
Rick's observations of human behavior in relationship to his experience with audiences from all industries and walks of life formed the basis of his latest book, "7 Rules You Were Born to Break," and is now the core focus of his corporate meeting presentations.
Rick has authored three books on personal growth and owns and manages Lighten Up Productions, Inc., the umbrella agency for the development and contracting of his own presentation work.

Ain't ain't misbehavin' is the way to go

Yes, there are books out there. These books are out there to help you in almost more ways than there are to be human. In your sleep and in your dreams, awake and walking about, how to live longer, better, smarter, faster, more beautiful, closer to the Gods, God or the scientifically proven absence of the Deity. There are very big books so dense and sleep-inducing that you wonder how the pharmaceutical industry ever got off the gound...and then there are those slim volumes for our thinned-down hurried and frantic world, loaded with pithy wisdom and helpfulness you just won't have time to apply to your life.
Rick Lewis's "7 Rules You Were Born to Break" does something else. It is pretty slim, 138 pages, with a photo of the author on the cover atop his 4 meter unicycle... and this is indeed the perfect image-metaphor for what he is trying to get across: You too can come up here with me, up here at four meters, delighting audiences, fearlessly amazing crowds wherever you go and whatever you do.
We are talking about the metaphor here, we each have that four meter potential with respect to ourselves, that rightful expansion, joy of completion, mountain of excellence we are afraid to even try climbing. As Rick explains it, he only got this unicycle because the young man who had had it made never mustered the nerve to get up there and make it work...which is what Rick did when he went to pick it up at the young man's house, falling flat on his face - on the lawn, we are not stupid in our risk taking - from four meters up before he got the hang of it in a single afternoon.
This book takes you through the paces, the seven rules to break, and the seven misbehaviors accompanying each one that you put into action in your life (by misbehavior Rick is talking about doing things like being determined when everyone and everything around us would have us give up, give in, and conform to conformity). Each of the Rules comes with a story he's lived through, the lesson learned then or later and the sparkling demonstration that the four meter unicycle is in each of us, folded up and dormant for the most part, requiring that glimpse of awareness and suspension of disbelief to first unfold and then wait while we place ourselves atop it - and now most importantly - reach out for the right kind of help that is going to get us up there and let us do the flying.
We live in mostly strange times. In a healthy world the misbehaviors Rick lists would be the very actions to take to achieve legitimacy, dignity, and excellence. And Rick Lewis will help you get there, on your own terms.

Street wise

This is a well written, entertaining book that is a quick read.
the author takes colorful vignettes from his own checkered career as a street entertainer, and weaves them into a series of instructional ideas.
The book underlines the power of story telling, the stories are great and the lessons are smoothly drawn. This book would be something that a whole team, or company could use as a collective tool to encourage excellence and creativity.
It is hard not to respect a man who, for decades, paid his bills by riding a 12 foot unicycle. And then parlayed those skills into a second career as a motivational speaker for Fortune 500 companies.
Hope he writes another one, there is a lot that can be learned from his unique experience

"7 Rules you were born to break" is a book I'll definitely be sharing with my clients this year. It is an engaging, funny, poignant and profound look at the rules that we unconsciously obey that trap us in mediocrity and dissatisfaction. Breaking the rules, as corporate consultant and entertainer Rick Lewis suggests we do, means challenging the status quo and all the unwritten assumptions that keep organizations and human communities from being as innovative and as brilliant as they truly, innately are. I'm convinced if you read this book and break a few rules, you really will open the doors to untapped possibilities in your organization.
