This beautiful work by Dom Chautard focuses on the need to convert ONESELF to Christ first, to become a "living resevoir of the Holy Ghost" and not simply a channel. Dom Chautard keenly outlines the basic stages of spiritual life and gives specific direction in developing a rich interior life, which he assures the reader is "the shortest path to Heaven."

A Call to Perfection

This book is just beautiful. It is the book that was kept handy at the bedside of Pope Saint Pius X. It is a powerful reminder of the absolutely essential role that prayer plays in apostolic activity and the fruitlessness and barrenness of any reliance upon our own self-sufficiency in apostolic work. This book really helped change my outlook on the active life, which is often sharply contrasted with the contemplative life. All action is for the sake of union with God. Contemplation is primary in the life of the Christian. We are all called, ultimately, to a perfection that leads to a union and contemplation of God in eternity, the beatific vision, where we shall see God "as He is." Prayer is a foretaste of this union. It is a sort of an imperfect participation in this union with God that we are privileged to partake in during this earthly life.

Far too many, however, turn this order on its head, and they see contemplation as something that they are too busy to partake in. These people rely upon their own skills and efforts rather than upon the grace of God. They think that if they just DO more, if they just expend more effort, things will work out. To do this, they may have to cut time out of their life of prayer. After all, isn't a life of prayer for the monks? This book shows how very wrong this view is.

This work is also a reminder to the non-Catholic who has wrongly understood the Catholic teaching on faith and works. The works of the Christian are done in God's grace. To bear fruit, they must be blessed by God's Sovereign Will. They are not done as though one would "earn" one's salvation. The Catholic Church has always condemned such an understanding. These works, while necessary, are a free response to His Grace. This book reminds us of this truth and calls us to purify our understanding so that we rely upon Him for all things. As Saint Augustine quoted Scripture in his Anti-Pelagian writings, "What have you that you have not received?" The clear answer is nothing. We were created from nothing, and were it not for God's will, we would return to nothing. We have nothing of which to boast, and we must rely upon Him for all things, and even for the gift of prayer and the gift of works, as Saint Paul told us: "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."

This book, perhaps more than any other that I have read outside of the Holy Scripture, reminds us: "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The findings illustrate that the press has used a variety of discursive strategies to delegitimize the candidacies of women politicians throughout history, which might have contributed to negative voter attitudes toward women in politics. Gendered stereotypes, gendered news frames, and double binds utilized in news coverage served to protect a male-dominated status quo. Yet a significant finding in Palin’s coverage indicates that gender bias in news coverage is increasingly facing criticism, suggesting the tide may finally be turning in favor of more equalized discourse.

Familiar but Intriguing!

I received this book from NetGalley to review and within a few pages of starting it I was hooked and had a hard time putting it down. Avid paranormal readers will immediately notice the resemblance to J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood novels (though this is not a vampire novel); however this book doesn't have the ridiculous slang and some of the other features of Ward's books but is still just as entertaining.

I loved the fact that Olivia did not just immediately give into the physical feelings that she experienced around Daegan and at least waited a bit and was wary, it made her seem much more realistic. The author did a fabulous job of keeping the story hot, but not straying into erotica with her steamy but not kinky love scenes.

All in all this was an enjoyable read and I look forward to the next in the series!

Will we find out what happens to the Trident Group?

I loved the book but I went searching for the sequel. I even wrote to the author asking what happened to Vaughn, Cade and
and Daemon. I wanted to know if the Trident Group survived the Obsidian Lord and if Dr. Roberts escaped the kidnapping.
It is definitely a four star book, but it's not fair to leave your fans in limbo. I love a books with a beginning, middle, end or continuation. Please do not leave us hanging.

Worth the time and money

I have read a few paranormal stories, but I'm not really into vampires or wolves as romantic heroes. That just doesn't feel right. Maybe I saw too many scary movies as a child. Who knows?

I did, however, give Darkest Caress a chance as I'm a big fan of Kaylea Cross' writing and having read all of her books I was pretty sure she'd do a good job on her first book in this genre. I definitely don't regret spending the money or my time with this book. It kept me "turning the page" on my Kindle until I'd read it in one sitting and I immediately wanted to continue with the next stories in the series. Oh well, I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next instalments, but they are on my "wish list".

What did I like? The characters are interesting, they aren't the usual bloodsucker types, it's a good versus evil thing, the nasty characters had an opportunity for redemption before their demise, the hero is a honey albeit a little too considerate for his (and her) own good, the sex scenes make me wish I was in them, the hero's 2 backup guys have an interesting story to tell as well and the damsel isn't a ditzy airhead. Even if I become lazy in my own writing, when I buy a book I'm a big fan of correct grammar and spelling and this book has a lot less than many of the books I've read, so I wasn't jerked out of the story with observation of errors.

Would I buy another in this Empowered series or any other work from Kaylea? Absolutely.

Is it worth the money? Sure. It's cheaper than a glass of wine and will take longer to get through, and will make you feel just as good. Unless of course, you sit up reading until 3am :-)

The Bible for any a cappella group

This book is basically the Bible for any a cappella group. As someone who's been lucky to have had a great career performing around the world with an a cappella group, I can tell you that this is the REAL deal. Whether you're in a school group, a pro group, or interested in putting together an amateur group, this book gives you the tools you need. Just look at the chapters and you'll see how thoroughly this covers all the topics you deal with in a real-life a cappella group today. (Um, there's even an entire chapter on FX pedals. Amazing.)

If you want to learn how to succeed in any field, you read the book written by THE undisputed expert in that field. That's what this book is for a cappella.

I'm confused why some other reviewers are focusing on a specific detail that they feel is missing in one of the history chapters. I think they're missing the point of this book. I'm recommending this book because, as a performer, I think it's the most valuable resource for any a cappella group performing today. The history part is interesting context -- for the other 42 chapters.

This is a solid resource for anyone in a cappella! The guides to every piece of running a group, using microphones, and other musical techniques of the modern era are a refreshing change of pace from most other a cappella resources that are available at the moment.
