About the Author
Kim Boyce is a former pastry chef (at Spago and Campanile). She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, who is a chef at Spago, and two daughters. While at Campanile, she helped Nancy Silverton with her Sandwich Book (Knopf, 2002) and has cooked alongside chefs like Mario Batali, Claudia Fleming, Lidia Bastianich, Alice Waters, and Anthony Bourdain. She has contributed to Bon Appetit and has been featured in the Los Angeles Times on numerous occasions (both as subject and contributor).

Baking "with" whole grains, but not "of" them

This book is gorgeous, and a great choice for those who are trying to add variety to their baking and sneak in some whole grain goodness. I admit to being disappointed though when I got it and realized that the majority of recipes call for a significant amount of all-purpose white flour. After all the glowing reviews I had hoped that somehow (miraculously!) someone had finally figured out how to make these delicious treats without it. She addresses this head-on at the start of the book and talks about the compromises she's had to make to retain the texture and loft of the baked goods, but I hadn't seen it mentioned in any reviews so I wasn't aware of it when I purchased it online. I'll still enjoy it, and look forward to happily making many of these delicious recipes. I'll just make them less frequently than if they were "of" whole grain rather than "with" whole grain.

Amazing cookbook, batting 1000 so far.

I am so impressed with this cookbook. I've posted pics of some of the things I've tried out of it so far -- the whole wheat chocolate chip cookies, the Spelt Flour Currant scones and the Sweet Potato Muffins (with buttermilk, yogurt and medjool dates). All 3 recipes I followed pretty much to the T, and all 3 came out just fantastic. Really, really good stuff. I can't wait to try more of these recipes. It is so fun to work with the different flours, and apparently Kim put a whole lot of care and precision into making sure that each of these recipes works just right. I'm very, very happy with this purchase and can wholeheartedly recommend this cookbook to anyone interested in trying out baking with new types of flour. A+

Makes you feel like a REAL baker!

I love this book! I just know it's going to change my life. I've never been confident about baking, er, I should say I never was, but I am now. I heard Kim interviewed on the radio and when she was talking about all the different flours it really opened up the whole idea of baking to me. I had no idea there were so many interesting possibilities with all these different grain flours.

I bought two copies of her book and gave one to a baker friend. I've had it two weeks and have made five things: cast-iron flatbread, corn gruy�re muffins, cheddar biscuits, sand cookies, and tonight the olive oil bread. All of them have been fantastic. I made the flatbread and asked my boyfriend to make some kind of fajitas with it, and he did and we were in heaven. We took Kim's suggestion on the muffins and he made chili to go with them. A couple of nights ago I made the sand cookies at midnight and making them without a bowl or utensils was like a meditation. Only your hands and it really looked and felt like sand. Was a wonderful experience and would be fun for kids learning how to bake.

Tonight I made the olive oil cake with rosemary and bittersweet chocolate. Was crazy good, like a cross between bread and cake. I really can't stand super sweet things so this was perfect. My housemate, who has tried all of them, said it was the best so far, and she has been raving the whole time. She gave me notice she was moving out before I got the book but said I was making it really hard to leave with all this baking I'm doing! Oh, and I forgot to mention that before I started on the first recipe, I went out and bought all the flours she uses in the book, so I would be prepared. I'm just so excited to keep baking, and to try the next recipe. She is really creative and has clearly put a lot of thought into this book.

I have so much anticipation for each recipe because they are all consistently wonderful. As soon as I finish one, in my mind I say, "Ok, which one will I make next?" I'm possessed with the new desire to bake, and all my friends love it. My only criticism would be that she doesn't mention how many each recipe will serve, but I do love the way she clearly puts out the ingredients and separates them into "wet mix" and "dry mix". I'm totally hooked and can't wait to make ALL the recipes, and then buy her next book!

Flying Backwards follows the journey of a woman living a sheltered life in a small town. Lovable characters, great read!

I read this romance in less than a week, and I loved it. The main character Eleanor is a strong and determined lady who makes one decision, which changes her life completely with surprising twists and turns. The descriptions of the places she visits as a flight attendant are excellent, the characters believable, and the three men male love interests make it an enjoyable read. I will be checking out further books by Jennifer Smith.

This story is a sweet romantic adventure with lovely details of foreign cities. I highly recommend it!

These exercises really work.

If you want to strengthen your fingers and learn note patterns relevant to all types of music, you need this book. Yes, the exercises sound repetitive, and they'll drive anyone listening to you practice them nuts, but they work. And after practicing them for a while, you begin to realize that they are not as repetitive as they seem. The patterns vary in a way that becomes more obvious as you practice them more. The exercises are carefully designed to (1) strengthen the weak fingers of the hand (3-4-5), and (2) teach patterns of notes that recur not only in classical music but in melodies of all types of music. Each exercise varies in a manner that rests the fingers worked on in the previous exercise, so you can play through a series of them without overly tiring out your hands. For this reason they work great as warm-ups.
The book is divided into three sections of 20 exercises each. I use the first 20 as warm-ups, playing them for about 15 minutes. The later exercises are more advanced and teach things like fast running octaves, arpeggios, and repeated notes. Since I started using these exercises, my hands are noticably stronger. I've been playing piano for 32+ years, and play at an advanced level. But these exercises (at least numbers 1 through 20) would be useful for a pianist of any level, from beginner to advanced. Yes, they can be boring to play, but the improvement you will notice from 15-20 minutes a day is worth it.

I'll bet your piano teacher sent you over here...

As a child, I hated technical exercise books like this. I remember the old teacher with the ruler, the Bartok book, the red pen, the check marks the circles, and ahhhhhhhhhh... I shudder... But now, years later, I've not only become a professional Jazz musician, but I teach too, and you know something, even though my particular method of teaching involves very little reading (mainly because I teach Jazz improv) this is the one book that not only do I reccomend to my students, but also that I've started picking up again, because actually the exercises are relevent to players of all levels. The reason is because regardless of what type of music you play, the finger pattern exercises in this book are universal and relevent. On the surface they look very simple, almost childish compared to some of the more nightmarish books (Czerny, anyone?) but the truth is, once you've mastered them, melodies will fall under your fingers and hopefully you'll feel as home on your piano as you do on your computer keyboard ...

I'm a beginner pianist and my teacher felt it necessary to have me not only practise my scales but also to strengthen my fingers, and so she gave me this book. I can't believe the difference its made. My fingers are a hundred times stronger than before!

When I first opened the book the first words out of my mouth were "You want me to play THIS!?!?!?!". But when I started playing them I realized they were actually really simple. Once you learn the first measure, you pretty much know the rest of the excersise. The excercises were really tiring at first, but after only a few days I could play the first six 4 times in a row without feeling overly tired.

I had some trouble with some of the later exercises (I've only gotten up to # 15), but that was because I didn't spend enough time on the earlier ones. Each excercise builds for the next, so that when you finish one your all ready for the following one. I don't think any of the excercises will be hard if I study the excersises I already know.

I think the excersises are alot more fun than some of the other things my teacher wants me to play. I don't think their annoying even if I repeat one over and over. I highly recomend this book.

The book is a good overview of carpets.

This book is a good overview of carpets produced in eight areas- Anatolia, Persia, The Caucasus, Western Turkestan, Eastern Turkestan, India, China, and Europe. The listing of these titles of the various carpet areas should tell you that this book has focused on historical carpets. It is neither the most basic nor the most detailed of books on this subject. There is more emphasis on earlier, more historical carpets, and on more commercially produced rather than tribal carpets. The photographs are wonderful. Overall, I would give this book high marks. Target market for this book would be interior designers or highly informed buyers, not so much the rug dealers or other professionals who want even more detailed information.

One of my favorite books on oriental carpets: visually stunning

I don't necessarily disagree with the other reviewer except I think that when the words "origins" and "history" are in a book's title...and the description above has "antique" in the first sentence...it's pretty clear that this is going to be about important historic carpets mostly found in museums. The first section of the book is entitled "The World of Carpets" but instead of discussing the carpets of various countries, this is about the origins, making of, layout, styles, decoration and motifs of carpets. The second part of the book, entitled "The Art of the Carpet" discusses the world geography of carpets including Anatolia, Persia, The Caucasus, India, Western and Eastern Turkestan, China, and Europe. On page 196 is a detailed listing of museums where the largest or most important collections of carpets can be viewed.

The stunning thing that makes me turn to this book quite often--I have many books on rugs and carpets--is the presentation. Your eyes are hit with color on every single page. It is very striking that many pages are black which gives a surprisingly different perspective on similarly colored carpets. Many photos of close-ups or whole carpets cover an entire page; a few extend to the other page and some even cover both entire pages. With no margins, these seem very accessible to the reader. I like that the motifs and overall designs of the carpets are well-detailed. This is a fun book to peruse, even if you're not interested in the indepth discussion.
