A unique spicy read
By Marie Brown
Marie's Tempting Reads Gifted Review:

The Colors of Autumn is the third book in Silke Ming's Five Widows Series. With each new installment I noticed that each of the widows has different sexual tastes which adds its own flavor to the stories. They are always unique in their own way and are BIG with the sex scenes. I really liked this story a lot more then the last one. But there was a couple of small things that did bother me about this book.

Shortly after Autumn goes to Charleston to meet back with Bobby Jo for some more hot sex, Autumn learns that Bobby Jo likes to be in control in the bedroom. When Bobby Jo decides to do some personal grooming on Autumn, one of the terms that was used disturbed me. I did not like to think of a woman's mound to be a "grassy knoll" that needed to be "sheared like a spring lamb". This definitely made me think poor Autumn had a forest down there and I didn't find that sexy at all. However, the sex between Bobby Jo and Autumn was quite hot and inventive and was really something to read about. The only other thing that threw me slightly was I felt for Autumn's age, she was too naive and too young minded in my opinion. Other then these two things, I really did enjoy the story. I liked how Autumn was trying to find herself and thought her experimenting with Bobby Jo and Richard and her finally able to figure out what she really wanted was really well played.

With everything being so interesting and the story being really unique and sexy over all, I gave The Colors of Autumn a FOUR OUT OF FOUR STARS! Even though there was a couple of things that popped out as being a little odd, the story all together was really good and I found this to be one of my favorites in The Five Widows series.

Museums and Education: Purpose, Pedagogy, Performance (Museum Meanings), by Eilean Hooper-Greenhill

At the beginning of the 21st century museums are challenged on a number of fronts. The prioritisation of learning in museums in the context of demands for social justice and cultural democracy combined with cultural policy based on economic rationalism forces museums to review their educational purposes, redesign their pedagogies and account for their performance.

The need to theorise learning and culture for a cultural theory of learning is very pressing. If culture acts as a process of signification, a means of producing meaning that shapes worldviews, learning in museums and other cultural organisations is potentially dynamic and profound, producing self-identities. How is this complexity to be ‘measured’? What can this ‘measurement’ reveal about the character of museum-based learning? The calibration of culture is an international phenomenon, and the measurement of the outcomes and impact of learning in museums in England has provided a detailed case study. Three national evaluation studies were carried out between 2003 and 2006 based on the conceptual framework of Generic Learning Outcomes. Using this revealing data Museums and Education reveals the power of museum pedagogy and as it does, questions are raised about traditional museum culture and the potential and challenge for museum futures is suggested.

The Sun in the Church: Cathedrals as Solar Observatories, by J. L. Heilbron

Between 1650 and 1750, four Catholic churches were the best solar observatories in the world. Built to fix an unquestionable date for Easter, they also housed instruments that threw light on the disputed geometry of the solar system, and so, within sight of the altar, subverted Church doctrine about the order of the universe.

A tale of politically canny astronomers and cardinals with a taste for mathematics, The Sun in the Church tells how these observatories came to be, how they worked, and what they accomplished. It describes Galileo's political overreaching, his subsequent trial for heresy, and his slow and steady rehabilitation in the eyes of the Catholic Church. And it offers an enlightening perspective on astronomy, Church history, and religious architecture, as well as an analysis of measurements testing the limits of attainable accuracy, undertaken with rudimentary means and extraordinary zeal. Above all, the book illuminates the niches protected and financed by the Catholic Church in which science and mathematics thrived.

Superbly written, The Sun in the Church provides a magnificent corrective to long-standing oversimplified accounts of the hostility between science and religion.

Amazon.com Review
The Sun in the Church by J.L. Heilbron is a provocative work of scholarship that challenges long-held views of the relationship between science and Christianity. Heilbron's main point is simple enough: "The Roman Catholic Church gave more financial and social support to the study of astronomy for over six centuries, from the recovery of ancient learning during the late Middle Ages into the Enlightenment, than any other, and, probably, all other, institutions." Despite the persecution of Galileo, Heilbron notes, the Church actively supported mathematical and astronomical research--often designing cathedrals that could also function as observatories--in order to set the precise date of Easter (a crucial endeavor for maintaining the unity of the Church). Heilbron's fluid, engaging style brings his detailed reconstructions of 16th- and 17th-century Church politics to life. And his argument that scientific knowledge was deemed both morally neutral and politically useful during the Reformation and beyond yields an unusually interesting, complex, and human understanding of Catholicism in the early Modern period. --Michael Joseph Gross

From Library Journal
It is difficult for contemporary readers who live in an increasingly global world to comprehend the difficulty of establishing the correct date of EasterAthe first Sunday, after the first full moon, after the vernal equinox. Heilbron (formerly history and vice chancellor, Berkeley; currently Senior Research Fellow, Oxford) chronicles the ironic relationship between astronomy and the Catholic Church as it seeks the means to determine this date. This is the story of politically astute astronomers and cardinals who have to reconcile church doctrine with Galileo's universe. Heilbron deals specifically with four cathedrals, which, as a result of the "Easter date problem," function as both houses of worship and excellent solar observatories. The text is filled with fine detail and is richly illustrated. An erudite and scholarly work with extensive notes and bibliography, this may be a bit narrow in scope for the average reader; recommended for large public and academic libraries.AJames Olson, Northeastern Illinois Univ. Lib., Chicago
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Scientific American
"[Heilbron] has researched his subject deeply... a rich history of... the development of the calendar and the relations between the Church and science."

The great advantage of Professor Heilbron's book is that he assumes his reader is not an idiot, and neither is he, which is refreshingly original these days. It's true, as the previous reviewer noted, that he throws around a lot of geometry and technical astronomy, but he also writes so clearly that it's straightforward, if demanding of attention, to follow. His style is, moreover, both witty and often droll, as when he notes that by the late seventeenth century the Jesuits were teaching Galilean astronomy, "using the convenient fiction that it was a convenient fiction. Those willing to call a theory a hypothesis could publish any astronomy they wanted."

I wish there were more books like this!
By Helmer Aslaksen
I'm a professor of mathematics, but I'm also a "closet historian". This book is a great work of scholarship both in terms of history and mathematics. It's true that if you don't know much about spherical astronomy, you may get a bit of shell-shock, but why don't you pick up Kaler: "The Ever-changing Sky" or Evans: "The History and Practice of Ancient Astronomy" to learn the basic. The you can go back to Heilbron's book to appreciate it fully. Believe me, it's worth the effort!
PS. One of my students has written a mathematical supplement to this book. It's available on my home page. (Amazon won't let me give you the URL in the review, but just do a quick searh on the web or look at the "bout me section".) So far it only covers the first few chapters, but we hope to be able to expand on it later. I hope some of you may find it useful.

Racing Savannah (Hundred Oaks), by Miranda Kenneally

They're from two different worlds.

He lives in the estate house, and she spends most of her time in the stables helping her father train horses. In fact, Savannah has always been much more comfortable around horses than boys. Especially boys like Jack Goodwin―cocky, popular and completely out of her league. She knows the rules: no mixing between the staff and the Goodwin family. But Jack has no such boundaries.

With her dream of becoming a jockey, Savannah isn't exactly one to follow the rules either. She's not going to let someone tell her a girl isn't tough enough to race. Sure, it's dangerous. Then again, so is dating Jack..

Praise for Miranda Kenneally:

From Booklist
Kenneally (Stealing Parker, 2012) again looks at sports through a female lens, this time tackling male-dominated horse racing, in this fourth Hundred Oaks novel. Savannah, her widowed horse-trainer father, and her father’s pregnant girlfriend move to Tennessee’s Cedar Hill, a farm that trains horses for races including the Kentucky Derby. When the teen notices that she is the only one who can control Star, a horse that bucks all riders, she seizes the chance to realize her dream of becoming a jockey. But placing herself in this potentially deadly sport is not Savannah’s only danger. There’s also her instant attraction to Jack Goodwin, the farm owner’s cocky, flirtatious son. Savannah decides she wants more than “friends with benefits” (even if she can’t stop thinking about those skin-to-skin benefits), but wonders if she will always be considered “the help” in Jack’s world of privilege. The author’s knack for weaving forbidden romance, breezy dialogue, and details of this lesser-known sports venue places it in the winner’s circle for reluctant readers and chick-lit fans. Review
""Kenneally's equestrian-themed romance is energized by another winning heroine . . . Kenneally's story about considering the importance of one's own happiness should appeal to a wide audience; despite some bumps in the road, there's never any doubt that all will end well."" - Publishers Weekly

""Kenneally has established herself as a writer of romances with some interesting complexity along with the swooning, and there's certainly plenty of swooning and steamy pleasure here. Additionally, Savannah herself is genuinely brash and not just saucy, and the Tennessee milieu is vividly evoked." " - Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Sweet and honest contemp story
By Ashley @ Book Labyrinth
Miranda Kenneally’s books have a style to them, a particular quality that make them so inherently readable. I love her conversational style of writing -- it makes her books so easy to delve into, and so enjoyable to read. This, her fourth book, focuses on the world of horse racing, something I know absolutely nothing about. I was happy to find myself interested in the subject (you almost can’t help it, it being something Savannah is so passionate about), but not overwhelmed by details or facts.

Our main pair for this book is Savannah and Jack, who are involved in a bit of a forbidden romance, since Savannah is part of the staff at Jack’s family’s farm. There’s a huge class difference between them, and a question of appropriateness since their parents do not approve. That undercurrent about class/money was definitely well written. It showed how having money doesn't mean you have class, but that it also doesn't indicate that you're a snob or a jerk. There was the same message about having less money: that just because that’s the case, it doesn’t mean you’re worth any less. The relationship in Racing Savannah was less swoony (for me) than in past books, but I still really liked these two together. It took some definite growth on both Savannah and Jack’s parts, but I feel like they ended up in a good place.

I really love how Miranda Kenneally brings back characters from past books for more than just two second cameos. There are major characters in this book that are siblings of past main characters, and without getting too spoilery, we get a wedding (!) for a past couple and an engagement for another. I can always picture the couples together in the future, finding weddings and engagements plausible, because the characters (including the ones from this book) are always such great friends. There’s so much more to their relationships than sexual chemistry.

In that regard, I think that Miranda Kenneally’s books are always very honest about sex and the emotions involved in it. They’re realistic about sexual activity, but it’s not presented in a tawdry or cheap way. It talks about how things can be good, but that you can also feel regret if things happen without a commitment. The book basically tells the characters (and the reader by default) that they are worthy, and that they deserve whatever it is they want from a relationship.

I’m a huge fan of Miranda Kenneally’s books: she is an auto-buy author for me. I definitely recommend Racing Savannah to fans of YA contemporary romance, but also for fans of sports books, or fans of just about any type of book that features strong relationships and a good message, without it being preachy in any way.

Great YA Romance!
By Ellen @ The Canon
Originally posted on The Canon! [...]

I grew up with a horse in my backyard (we had lots of land, so it was more like we lived on the other side of his pasture). My mom says when I was little, I used to go sit in his barn and talk to him. I remember bits and pieces of this, but mostly I remember mucking out stalls and learning to ride. Horses are near and dear to me because they remind me of my home & of my mom, who is one of the biggest animal lovers I know. Racing Savannah, a romance taking place on a horse farm in Tennessee, was the perfect story for me.

THE CHARACTERS
Savannah is the element of this novel that really won me over. Her spitfire personality mixed with a generous, warm heart and a love for animals created one of the most complex characters I've read so far this year. The entire novel is told through her point of view, so I got to see her thoughts, reasoning and memories, which helped create this amazing character. Her determination to take care of her family and those she loved came before her pride, a quality that is hard to resist admiring.

Jack is presented as the typical rich playboy in the beginning of the novel. Although we never see from his perspective, Kenneally makes it easy to follow his train of thought and motivation. Jack has the power to at once push those boundaries that hold Savannah and her family and be tied up in them all at once. It was fascinating to watch his character struggle with what he wanted versus what he was expected to do. His character was an unexpected pleasure.

THE PLOT
I was really impressed by this plot. There were so many layers, subplots, and side story lines mixing together and by the end of the novel, they slid easily into one cohesive resolution. That's not to say there was too much going on, plot-wise - it felt exactly like sliding into their lives.

The romance really surprised me. I don't know quite what I was expecting, but the tension between Jack and Savannah kept me on my toes, especially after the halfway mark of the novel. I loved how there were so many different factors against them, forcing the plot to twist and turn. I'm trying to not give it away. It was fabulous.

THE WRITING
Kenneally's smooth, invisible writing carried me right off from my couch on the West coast to a horse farm in Tennessee, with the sights and sounds of horses. Truly, it was so easy to slip into this story because of her gorgeous writing.

There was a lot more humor than I expected. Savannah's personality gave a lot of room for little side remarks and, more than once, this novel made me laugh aloud.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I'm disappointed in myself that I haven't picked up one of Kenneally's books before, but I'm going to rectify that as soon as possible. I loved Savannah and Jack's story. My only wish is that there had been a little narration from his point of view, but it isn't a deal breaker. Savannah was such an entertaining character to have as a narrator throughout the story.

Another Blue Ribbon for Kenneally!
By kindlemom1 (My Guilty Obsession)
Miranda Kenneally has a knack for creating outstanding, down to earth characters that you instantly relate to and fall in love with. It just might be what I love most about her writing. That easy flow of dialog, the lovableness of the characters and the real life situations that are so easy to imagine and picture yourself in.

Once again she captures the essence of first love, what it means to be different, fighting for what you want and believe in and standing up for yourself perfectly in Racing Savannah.

Savannah is a strong heroine. She is a fighter. She fights for her family, for her friends, and for what she wants from life. She has to be one of the strongest, bravest heroines I have come across in a really long time and I absolutely adored her.

Just like Kenneally can write a strong heroine, she can also write a swoon worthy, equally as strong hero and that is exactly what she delivers in Jack's character.

Although they are two very different people in very different worlds, they are both trying to prove themselves and make something out of what they have.

I couldn't have created a better bunch of characters if I tried. Not only do we get a whole slew of new ones to fall in love with, but, we get sneak peaks at the old ones we have already fallen in love with from past books (Yay for Will, Parker, Sam, Jordan, and Kate). And come on, this book is about horses, hello, almost every single girl at one point or another in their lifetime dreamt about owning and riding horses. Great characters, crazy horses, a sweet sigh worthy romance and great life lessons, what more could a girl ask for?

Kenneally has was again proving to me why I not only love her writing but adore this series. This is one series, one author I will continue to have on my auto buy list.

The Day the Revolution Began: Reconsidering the Meaning of Jesus's Crucifixion, by N. T. Wright

The renowned scholar, Anglican bishop, and bestselling author widely considered to be the heir to C. S. Lewis contemplates the central event at the heart of the Christian faith—Jesus’ crucifixion—arguing that the Protestant Reformation did not go far enough in transforming our understanding of its meaning.

In The Day the Revolution Began, N. T. Wright once again challenges commonly held Christian beliefs as he did in his acclaimed Surprised by Hope. Demonstrating the rigorous intellect and breathtaking knowledge that have long defined his work, Wright argues that Jesus’ death on the cross was not only to absolve us of our sins; it was actually the beginning of a revolution commissioning the Christian faithful to a new vocation—a royal priesthood responsible for restoring and reconciling all of God’s creation.

Wright argues that Jesus’ crucifixion must be understood within the much larger story of God’s purposes to bring heaven and earth together. The Day the Revolution Began offers a grand picture of Jesus’ sacrifice and its full significance for the Christian faith, inspiring believers with a renewed sense of mission, purpose, and hope, and reminding them of the crucial role the Christian faith must play in protecting and shaping the future of the world.

Review
“With this work, N.T. Wright topples the simplistic, personalized view of the cross and the bloodthirsty God that once wrecked my own faith. Instead, we find the cross illuminated by a God that invites us to bring goodness into this world instead of trying to escape it.” (Mike McHargue, author of Finding God in the Waves and host of The Liturgists Podcast and Ask Science Mike)

“The question ‘Why did Jesus have to die?’ has haunted the human race for two thousand years. Wright locates the crucifixion in the sweep of Israel’s story (and ours) with power, depth, and freshness of thought.” (John Ortberg is senior pastor of Menlo Church, and author of All The Places To Go)

“Many have wondered where N.T. Wright stood in the atonement debate. He applies his story of Israel and the church to the cross, setting it into a historical and narrative matrix that sheds light on the heart of the gospel that comes from the heart of God’s love.” (Scot McKnight, author of The King Jesus Gospel)

“From the day Christ was crucified his followers have sought to understand the meaning of the cross. Wright has written one of the most important books on this subject ever written. Something deeper, more revolutionary, happened on the cross. This book will help you discover the meaning of the cross.” (Adam Hamilton, author of Making Sense of the Bible)

“Relevant Recommends: Wright invites us to explore the crucifixion within the broader story of what God is doing in creation” (Relevant)

“N. T. Wright’s The Challenge of Jesus revolutionized my theology. As I read The Day the Revolution Began, I kept thinking that it will similarly revolutionize the understanding of a new generation of readers. It is lucid, engaging, thorough, compelling, and profoundly important.” (Brian D. McLaren, author of We Make the Road By Walking)

“Wright delves into the Crucifixion and, surprising himself, he says, finds it the mainspring of the faith and the church. Wright’s exegesis should inform and encourage everyone concerned with Christianity’s continuing vitality.” (Booklist)

“In his new book, Wright explains that Jesus’ death does more than just get us into heaven.” (Christianity Today)

“Wright’s bracing and thought-provoking exegesis should inform and encourage everyone concerned with Christianity’s continuing vitality.” (Booklist (Starred Review))

“Offers a comprehensive interpretation of Jesus’s sacrifice and its significance for the Christian Faith” (Publishers Weekly)

“A thought-provoking book…highly recommended for all libraries and will appeal to general readers interested in current theological thought.” (Library Journal (Starred Review))

From the Back Cover

When Jesus of Nazareth died the horrible death of crucifixion at the hands of the Roman army, nobody thought him a hero. His movement was over. Nothing had changed. This was the sort of thing that Rome did best. Caesar was on his throne. Death, as usual, had the last word.

Except that in this case it didn’t. As Jesus’s followers looked back on that day, they came up with the shocking, scandalous, nonsensical claim that his death had launched a revolution. That by 6:00 p.m. on that dark Friday the world was a different place. They believed that with this event the one true God had suddenly and dramatically put into operation his plan for the rescue of the world. They saw it as the day the revolution began.”

Leading Bible scholar, Anglican bishop, and bestselling author N. T. Wright argues that the church has lost touch with the revolutionary nature of the cross. Most Christians have been taught a reduced message that the death of Jesus was all about “God saving me from my ‘sin’ so that I could ‘go to heaven.’” According to Wright, this version misconstrues why Jesus had to die, the nature of our sins, and what our mission is in the world today.

In his paradigm-shifting book Surprised by Hope, Wright showed that the Bible’s message is not that heaven is where we go in the future; rather, the Bible sees the primary movement as heaven coming down to earth, redeeming the world, beginning now. In this companion book, Wright shows how Christianity’s central story tells how this revolution began on a Friday afternoon two thousand years ago and continues now through the church’s work today. Wright seeks to wake up the church to its own story, to invite us to join in Jesus’s work of redeeming the world—to join his revolution.

Wright wonderfully delves into the cross... and my extra thoughts on how the traditional views can perhaps mix in with his
By Joon
First off to explain my rating, it is a wonderful, albeit dense, read. I have a feeling that this is an important book in the series of N. T. Wright's popular authorship (e.g. Surprised by Hope, Simply Christian, How God Became King, among others). Here he undertakes an ambitious attempt to weave various strands of his original expositions set out on numerous occasions into the very epicenter of our Christian faith. The enormous emphasis he has vigorously and justifiably placed through his past publications on the so-called Jewish contexts SURROUNDING the cross is here leveraged for the purpose of DIRECTLY illuminating the meaning of Jesus' crucifixion. I kind of consider this book as his delving into the very core of his own theological framework, where he examines all his previous enlightening arguments (e.g. the meaning of resurrection, ascension and new creation, human vocation and creation narrative, the Gospels' accounts of God's kingship, Jesus' representative substitution, the significance of Israel's rugged history, the unity of the Church, the role of the Spirit, heaven-and-earth interplay, among countless others) against Christianity's overriding centrality of "what happened on the six o'clock of that Dark Friday." And he discovers that it actually makes breathtaking sense within his theological framework; the process of this discovery makes this book a fascinating read, especially for an avid reader of Wright as I am.

Now that was a lengthy one-paragraph comment to explain my five-star rating. I am actually writing the review in order to address the extreme polarity of ratings I currently observe. Even given the small sample size of seven ratings at the moment of my writing, 57% five-stars and 43% one-stars with no in-betweens certainly is not an ordinary pattern for any book, regardless of actual quality.

I think it is due to the fact that in this book, Wright sounds overly confrontative with the 'traditional' Protestant framework of understanding the crucifixion. Throughout the gradual buildup of arguments in the early parts of the book, he harshly belabors how the criticisms of his dissenters are missing the point. I understand his motivation since some people really will mount such oversimplified objections when he is at his crucial logical progression towards the climax. But even though I'm his fan, I still get the impression that he himself somehow repeatedly oversimplifies the 'traditional camp', especially Calvinist and Protestant formulations of Christian theology, that he differs with.

Excluding those grossly distorted angry-God-in-the-sky-sending-people-except-some-to-hell theologies that Wright, AND the traditional campers, rightly criticize, I have always felt that the issue arises more from the difference in approaches and emphases than from the degrees of theological validity. Wright, on one hand, enriches our Christian understandings with the highly needed historicity of the good news in multifarious layers and scales, spanning from Israel's stories all the way up to the cosmic narratives of creation and new creation. (I think that in this book, he shows that this multilayered historicity of the good news truly culminates squarely in the cross, much to many skeptics' relief.) The traditional Protestant perspectives, on the other hand, have had the philosophical underpinnings, addressing the fundamental relationship between the quintessentially human conditions and quintessentially divine providence that underlies the entire history. It is true that the traditional frameworks have had to undergo numerous improvements and corrective adjustments, but that does not prove their ultimate inadequacy at all.

I think the right theology has to possess both of these two pillars, covering the historical dimension of how the Bible weaves the story of God's initiatives in the world as well as the philosophical one of what it really means to us who are living in our own stories. The former complements the latter by, as Wright always masterfully suggests it does, inviting us to live our stories as part of God's, while the latter complements the former by filling God's story with the praises of people whose stories are personally (and yes, sometimes sentimentally) overwhelmed with his infinitely profound grace. They are mutually reinforcing, and definitely not at odds with each other.

For example, let me talk about the highly contentious imputation theology. I personally am more sympathetic to Wright's assertion that it is a caricature of the real thing. His alternative explanation of what it intends to convey seems to me to make more natural sense in the broader narratives of the Bible. I feel, however, that Wright's alternative somehow rids us of the feeling of overwhelming awe that we have when we realize that we are "put to right" (Wright's way of saying it) even though we have done nothing; that sense of personal significance is much better captured by the "imputed righteousness" account, even if it is indeed a caricature. I think the "Imputation" explanation delivers the sense of immense personal relevance at the cost of contextual simplification, while Wright's "Covenant membership" one conveys what that relevance really means in the grand scheme of God's world-saving plan at the expense of personal sensitivity, which does matter. In my humble opinion, it is much better if we retain both elements.

Personally speaking, while being a serial reader of N. T. Wright, I attend a church in South Korea where the main pastor, also a highly influential Christian author in my country, preaches from an utterly traditional Protestant framework. I sometimes find his understandings of grand historical undercurrents in the scriptures quite crude, and yet it is his sermons, not Wright's books and lectures on YouTube, that never fail to seriously challenge my personal faith and life towards more and more resolute obedience. At the same time, Wright has genuinely broadened my eyes to see God at work through the grand history of creation, and this is increasingly becoming a solid ground for my career aspirations (to somehow--I don't know how yet--implement Christ's victory in the greed-distorted fields of finance!), something my endeared pastor has not quite helped with. I am tremendously indebted to both trustees of God's Word, and I believe that they are both God's genuine theologians.

I write this review in order to contribute even just a little to promoting a reconciliatory conclusion for this unproductive controversy, where some critics nitpick Wright's every argument out of the understandable conservative fear that the essence of Christian faith might be at risk, and Wright in response becomes growingly defensive/accusative in his writing and ends up unduly caricaturing the differing perspectives, as he unfortunately does several times in this otherwise fantastic book. Here, Wright emphatically affirms the utter centrality of the cross and the forgiveness of sins, the two topics that he has not quite directly delved in before, and I do not think God would forbid him to work out their implications freshly onto the historical plain of the stories of Israel and humankind, rather than onto the already much-explored philosophical plain of intimately personal relevance.

Wright needs to tone down the rhetorical rediscovery language, but this is an important book
By Adam Shields
The Day the Revolution Began: Reconsidering the Meaning of Jesus’s Crucifixion is most connected to Wright’s earlier Surprised by Hope. It is not quite a sequel to Surprised by Hope, but it is in the same thread of Wright’s work. Surprised by Hope pointed out the way that the theology of the after life (eschatology), especially dispensational theology, distorts not just our understanding of our Christianity, but how we practice our Christianity.

The Day the Revolution began is attempting to do the same type of analysis with our theology of the atonement. I assume that many of NT Wright’s traditional critics will also disapprove of this book. Wright’s minimization of Penal Substitution (which has been clear in much of Wright’s writing) is explicit here. Wright is not saying that Penal Substitution is wrong. He is saying that the focus on Penal Substitution as the primary or only way to look at the atonement distorts our understanding of what Jesus did on the Cross.

My traditional approach to Wright is to listen to the book on audiobook once, than re-read it again later in print. This allows me to get an overview of the argument and then to focus more clearly on the parts of the argument on the re-read. This is certainly a book that I am going to need to re-read to fully understand, maybe twice.

One of the reasons that many get irritated with Wright is that is keeps presenting his ideas as either new, or the first return to ‘correct’ understanding in hundreds of years. If you are irritated about that, you will be irritated here. Wright’s strength is connecting the broad narrative sweep of scripture and the 1st century era culture. I think if he started working with a historical theologian that helped him connect his ideas explicitly to the historical theological work of theologians after the first century, it would help tone down that irritating tic and help readers connect his thought to its historical roots.

Wright wants to help people think clearly about how their theology connects to their daily life. I think that is one of his strengths. But part of what the church today needs is a connection of its theology to the historical church. But his description of his work as either new, or a rediscovery of what is lost, minimizes the connection to the historical teaching of the church. This is particularly true for low church fans of his that do not already have a strong connection to the traditional church. Maybe this is a blind spot that Wright has because of his British Anglican setting. Wright himself has a strong sense of both history, and the world wide range of the church, but many of his readers (and biggest fans) do not. (My reading of Thomas Oden in particular has convinced me of the importance viewing the theology of the church as a continuum with historical teaching and not new.)

Like virtually all of Wright’s books, The Day the Revolution Began is impossible to easily summarize. The best I can do is to say that Wright is making the argument that the cross was not primarily about dealing with sin (although it did do that) but about fulfilling the covenantal promise to Israel. The cross shows that the kingdom of God, which Jesus was claiming at the cross, is fundamentally a different conception of power than earthly power structures. And that the cross isn’t about Jesus dying for our sins as individuals but more about Jesus dying in order deal with the corporate idolatry of Israel as illustrated by the prophets and draw the rest of the world into covenant with God.

The biggest indictment against modern theology that Wright is making in the Day the Revolution Began is that we have reduced the cross to the fulfillment of a ‘works contract’. Jesus paid the price of God’s anger toward our individual sin and died so that God would forget his anger. Again, Wright is not saying that there is not some truth to this view. But it is a partial truth. Jesus’ death was part of the plan from the beginning not a result of our sin.

This quote (about Galatians’ message) is a good example of Wright’s goal here. (He is trying to get us to look at the cross from a different angle to help us understand it better.)

"The letter is about unity: the fact that in the Messiah, particularly through his death, the one God has done what he promised Abraham all along. He has given him a single family in which believing Jews and believing Gentiles form one body. What Paul says about the cross in Galatians is all aimed toward this end: because of the cross, all believers are on the same footing. And if that is the “goal” of the cross in Galatians, we will gain a much better idea of the “means.” As elsewhere in this book, our task is to rescue the “goal” from Platonizing “going to heaven” interpretations and the “means” from paganizing “angry God punishing Jesus” interpretations—and so to transform the normal perception of what “atonement theology” might be from a dark and possibly unpleasant mystery to an energizing and highly relevant unveiling of truth."

In the end, Wright is not minimizing Jesus’ work by moving the focus away from individual sin redemption. Wright is working to expand our view of Jesus’ work to make it a much bigger things than just individual sin redemption.

One last quote:

"And that means what it means not because of a “works contract,” a celestial mechanism for transferring sins onto Jesus so that he can be punished and we can escape, but because of the “covenant of vocation”—Israel’s vocation, the human vocation, Jesus’s own vocation—in which the overflowing love, the love that made the sun and the stars, overflowed in love yet more in the coming to be of the truly human one, the Word made flesh, and then overflowed finally “to the uttermost” as he was lifted up on the cross to draw all people to himself."

There are things I could wish were done better but I am always challenged when I read Wright ...
By Brent A. Emery
This book by Tom Wright does several things that I think are needed in Biblical Studies. First, he connects Yeshua's death to the nation of Israel and G-ds work within the covenants. Second, he connects the death of Yeshua with the Exodus narratives and goes on to include the Day of Atonement in his analysis. Third, he shows that salvation was not about us "going to heaven" but about establishing the Kingdom of G-d on this earth. Whether you agree with him or not Wright has presented a plausible case for his views and they need to be wrestled with by everyone. I have been giving this book to my friends as I believe this book lays out a case for understanding both the work of G-d and the vocation of redeemed mankind on this earth. There are things I could wish were done better but I am always challenged when I read Wright and this book should challenge even the most educated of Biblical students. Wright deals with several Biblical texts and offers his interpretation on those passages. Here again even if you disagree Wright makes a case that should be considered. I hope everyone will read this book as Wright has made his case and offered everyone something to glean from his work.
