Great book on FOUNDATIONS of SW

I usually do not write reviews, in fact, I think this is my first time. However, I felt obligated to write one, since it has been a great help on my PhD work.

First of all, if you are looking for a book on best practices on how to model your ontologies this is not the book for you. In fact, I have bought some other books for that, but none lived to my expectations.

However, if you are like me and want to actually understand the theory and foundations of RDF and OWL this is a must. I am currently working on a new language for probabilistic ontologies and I wanted to make sure I had a good understanding of OWL and RDF before I moved forward. I have read a lot of papers and books before this one, but I have to say this was by far the best read!

The authors also make some presentations available on the web in case you want to use them to teach others. I have used their material to "teach" my advisors in order to make sure I understood what I read. And I have to say it was of great help.

All in all, if you are looking for a book to understand what you can represent in RDF and OWL (syntax and semantics), the problems of merging rules and OWL, how DL reasoners work (Tableaux), and what kind of queries you can ask in RDF/OWL and a bit on how they work, I highly recommend this book. Otherwise, if you looking for a ontology engineering book, this is not for you (it just has one chapter on this topic and it just touches the surface on the subject). But then again, this book is not supposed to be a book on ontology engineering in the first place.

At last, one book that has what took me years to learn

I work in Health Care IT and hardly anyone in the field really understands Description Logic and OWL. It took years of reading and experimenting to understand how SNOMED-CT logic works. In this book, all in one place, there is explanation of OWL DL and reasoner algorithms, RDF, and Datalog. If everyone in Health Care IT read this book, we'd advance ten times faster.

Most complete book about RDF, OWL, Rules and SPARQL

The most completed book about Semantic Web technologies RDF and OWL, and its formal semantics. Well illustrated with examples and codes. Very exhaustive. The book also covers Rules and SPARQL, and comes with a lot of exercises.

The content is up to date and covers recent recommendations from the W3C like OWL2 and SROIQ knowledge bases.

A brief overview of XML and predicate logic is given as appendix.

Personally, I would have appreciated a more precise introduction about the Semantic Web architecture and technologies, and some words about the upper layers which are not covered by this book (proof and trust).

Two books in One

This book really covers two subjects. One is that it is a book about the formation, rise, operation, decline and fall of a company. The other is that it is about the rise and fall of the telecom market in the early 2000's.

The author was the CEO of Net2000 a telecom company formed in 1993 to its final hours in 2002. Inbetween was the magical moment of an IPO making the company listed on NASDAC. Only about 300 companies a year do an IPO, and that's out of about 600,000 companies that are started each year.

The other part of the story is about what happened in the telecomm market during these years. This was the time when WorldCom made the slight error in their accounting, only a small error, just a little over $10 billion.

This is the book of how they took the company from just an idea in the telecom business, through getting it started, initial funding and finally an IPO. Then the market changed. The best planning they could do failed. I am left with the question of what could another set of managers have done or was the marketplace so disruptive that nothing could have saved them.

About the Author
MJ Wayland is a writer, researcher and historian specialising in ghosts, supernatural belief and fringe history. His research has appeared in dozens of publications and he has consulted and appeared in over one hundred television programmes and documentaries. During the last ten years he has lectured internationally as well as appearing at The Sunday Times Literature Festival (along side Professor Bruce Hood) and various festivals and universities across the UK. MJ Wayland’s interest in the paranormal, especially ghosts, began at an early age after experiencing a number of unusual incidents that his peers could not explain. In his early teens he joined various research societies and began to study the multiple facets to the paranormal with a scientific and historical viewpoint. His research has taken him from dark haunted castles of Britain to the haunted graveyards of New Orleans, investigating his primary love of ghosts to sightings of black panthers. Since the mid-1990s, MJ Wayland has provided consultancy for TV, film and theatre as well as appearing in local, national, international newspapers, radio and TV. He is the author of eight best-selling books, “50 Real Ghost Stories” holding the Amazon top 10 bestselling Paranormal book from 2012 to 2014!

It's a pretty good book as far as ghost stories go. I like ghost stories when the house is quiet and everyone else has gone to sleep; I'd recommend it to a friend.

About the Author

Steven M. Freund attended the University of Central Florida and serves as a leader instructor of various Microsoft Office, computer concepts, programming, and Internet technology courses throughout Central Florida. Mary Z. Last has taught computer information systems since 1984. She retired from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Belton, Texas, where she was an Associate Professor and the Director of the Center for Effectiveness in Learning and Teaching. Ms. Last is actively involved in the Computing Educator's Oral History Project that encourages young women to pursue careers in math and science. She has been a contributing author to the Shelly Cashman Series since 1992. She also authors many instructor resources for database texts.

Philip J. Pratt is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science at Grand Valley State University, where he taught for 33 years. His teaching interests include database management, systems analysis, complex analysis, and discrete mathematics. He has authored more than 75 textbooks and has co-authored three levels of Microsoft Office Access 2013 books for this popular Shelly Cashman Series and A Guide to SQL.
