Scholarly Treatise on the Omaha Tribe
By GEORGIA
Do not expect a riveting plot or quick reading. This is a mini encyclopedia of the culture of the Omaha tribe, and as such, it is excellent. It also compares the customs, language and ceremonies of other closely related tribes. Though small, it is an excellent reference book.

Same review as Volume I. I am sure I will enjoy it. One of those books that must be read slowly and carefully to be enjoyed thoroughly.

EXACTLY WHAT I EXPECTED
By JAVIER RODRIGUEZ
I have not read either volumen I or volumen II yet but it is exactly what I expected: a deep study in the Omaha tribe (religion, culture) and I'm sure it will be interesting and I will enjoy it.
Moreover, even if I finally don't like it too much, it is exactly what I expected and what I was looking for. Expectations have been fully met with both books.

Review
"This book has more lives than a cat because its feet are firmly planted on the bedrock issues of race and class, its analysis goes to the quick of urban-industrial life in the early twentieth century, and its vivid narrative captures the tumultuous riot without ever losing scholarly balance." -- Alan Dawley, author of Struggles for Justice. A Fine Work, Highly Recommended
By P. Bruton
This book is an excellent account of the causes and aftermath of the Chicago Race Riot of 1919. Tuttle manages to pull together an array of primary sources including newspaper articles, meeting minutes, and first-hand accounts, both written and oral, to tell the story of the Chicago Race Riot. His goal is to write history "from the bottom up", and in this, he is successful.

My only complaint is that by focusing heavily on individual accounts and exceptions to the norm, Tuttle misses out on some broader historical trends. However, since his stated goal is to write a study of "individuals as well as groups", this approach is understandable, and, in places, even desirible.

This is one of the only books on the subject of the Chicago Race Riot of 1919, and, as such, it should be of interest to anyone studying the history of Chicago or the history of race relations in the United States.

Wonderful Book
By Bookaholic
Overall this is a wonderful book. It is obviously this is a long term study done by William W. Tuttle, Jr. I found that his main goal in this book was to write an understandable book that documents the events that occured in Chicago in the year of 1919. In his book, it is apparent that he covered every aspect and perspective of the events that took place. This may be due to the fact that he not only focuses on the events that took place in chicago. but also on other similar events that took place around the nation. My only compliant might be that because of this the theme of the book at times seem recurrent and repeative. That aside, I would suggest this book to anyone interested in the history of Chicago.

best (and only) book on the 1919 Chicago riots
By A Customer
As far as I know, this is the only book on the subject, which is an absolutely fascinating one for me. It is well written and very coherent, but unfortunately the author spends most of the book of the causes and results of the riots, not on the riot itself. Still, this is a wonderful book, essential for anybody interested in Chicago history.

A few bucks could save you big bucks
By Klipspringer
"80 Scams" is a quick and useful read for any traveler, covering the seemingly endless number of ways con artists have conceived to separate tourists from their money. Not only does the author outline the scams in detail, but he gives some pretty useful tips on how to counter them (or avoid them all together). Occasionally it gets a little tedious, as many of the ripoffs are variations on a single theme, but even so, it doesn't hurt to be aware of the many ways you can be relieved of your cash, or in the worst cases, of your life.

One has to marvel at the remarkably inventive scenarios scam artists have devised to steal your money, fully detailed in the book. I suspect that if these crooks devoted as much effort and creativity to a respectable line of work, they would be extremely successful in life. But, that is another story.

The author has done extensive traveling and encountered many of the scams up close and personally, so his authority on the topic is not to be doubted. One of the ripoffs he mentioned applies directly to a destination I will be visiting in a few months, so this alone made the book well worth the purchase price. It is human nature to drop one's guard when traveling, and to give people the benefit of the doubt when in a foreign land. The scammers know this, and take full advantage of it.

Buy the book, read a few examples every time you travel anywhere, and it will be an invaluable reminder to be alert, be smart, don't get taken for a sucker, and don't let a ripoff ruin your trip.

Very Enlightening
By Bourbon Rebellion
Peter John's Around the World in 80 Scams: an Essential Travel Guide was highly informative and provides its readers with simplistic breakdowns concerning how these con jobs and denizens operate. I particularly liked the way the book rates the frequency and locations of most of the scams mentioned.

For example, the "Clip Joint" scam is very common in New Orleans' French Quarter, although this city is not mentioned in particular. Many of us have fallen victim to some of these scams, or likely know of someone who has, and this book accurately labels and identifies such scams and their methods of operation.

On behalf of all tourists and global travelers, I want to thank Peter John for writing this insider information to forewarn us of the potential scams and dangers many of us are unaware even exist.

Don't travel abroad without reading this booklet first !
By kevin
This is an absolute MUST READ for anyone anticipating travel abroad. Many of these scams have been going on since I traveled in Europe in the late 60's. I was quite surprised that so many are still going on. This booklet also showed me MANY new scams that I had never heard of. For the small price this publication costs, I consider it an extreme bargain for the information it offers.

Once upon a time, that’s how most of these stories start. But this isn’t one of those stories…
Christmas is a time of magic and joy. It's the one thing in the world that can warm the hardest of hearts. At least, that's what it used to be like. For the last 200 years, under the cruel regime of the militia, hope and believe have faded along side happiness. For Davin, it wasn't hard to believe that nothing was going to be okay again. He's seen with his own two eyes the exhaustion and defeat that weigh down the dwindling population.

It's why he escaped the cities with their crushing hold on the citizens.

Stumbling through the woods with a storm on the brink, Davin seeks shelter if only for the night. But the cold winds and unforgiving snow try to claim him and he wakes up in a warm bed in a strange manor. An unusual creature, called a winter elf, pronounces him Santa Claus and Davin quickly realizes this isn’t a dream. He has found himself in Santa’s Workshop.

Refusing to believe that he’s actually Jolly Old Saint Nick he seeks out “Mrs Claus” convinced she’ll be able to tell the elves that he isn’t her husband. Only the woman he finds there isn’t what he’s expecting. In place of a matronly old woman he finds a hot, attractive young woman that he finds himself instantly attracted to. One good romp with her won't harm his chances of getting out of here - right?

In exchange for pretending to be Santa they make a bet where he has the chance to win exactly what he wants from her: sex with no strings attached. But making the bet is easy, following through with his promise turns out to be harder than he expects when emotions get involved.

Not to mention being Santa isn't just about cookies and magic, lists and toys. There’s an evil witch who is out to destroy Christmas, jaded by her broken heart. She sends Brujas and Vampires their way, hoping the creatures will destroy the last of Christmas magic and hope.

To save Christmas, Davin has to accept who he is meant to be and learn to believe again.

Get whisked away to Santa's Workshop in this magical retelling of the classic Fairy Tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

From the Author
Why did she have to be so beautiful? It was easier to ignore the growing desire inside of him if she were a little bit uglier. At least, he hoped that would be the case. He'd never felt anything akin to this kind of attraction toward a woman before that wasn't purely superficial and physical. Several weeks ago and they would have already been naked. But he found he liked spending time with her like this, just talking, enjoying each other's company.

God, what was going on with him?

"You look like you're over thinking again."

"Ugh, I am." He groaned and shook his head, turning to face her. As his mouth opened to say something she leaned in and grabbed the back of his head firmly. Whatever he was about to say was forgotten instantly while the rest of his voice was swallowed by the kiss.

"You need to stop thinking." She muttered, running her tongue along the seam of his mouth until he opened it allowing her to stroke the roof of his mouth. He nodded his head like she had spelled him, commanding him to follow her.

"I really need to stop thinking," he agreed. She nodded her head slowly and grabbed his hand, bringing it up to her shirt and setting his fingers against the buttons. So much for enjoying her company, but if she was really ready to do this, he certainly wasn't going to argue. This was the deal, after all.

Ella did not need to tell him twice as he got to work on the shirt, yanking the buttons from their holes and revealing her deliciously plump bosom to his hungry eyes. The Christmas red lace she wore was practically florescent against her alabaster skin, shaping her breasts perfectly. He didn't look away from them to speak, his hands gravitating to the cups.

About the Author
I'm fairly confident that I came out of womb reading abook. I've always loved stories in whatever medium they come. Books, movies, television shows... It didn't matter. I didn't discriminate (I still don't!). It was only a natural progression that I become a writer myself.

I've been telling stories for as long as I've been reading. Even if it was just standing in front of my family acting out dramatic retellings of my day or making up stories of my own it didn't matter. It was only a matter of time until I branched out into being a real writer and sharing my stories with friends and strangers alike. And you know what? It's the best job in the world.

I write dirty, sexy stories about humans & their supernatural lovers. I grew up dreaming of being a Greek Goddess, not a Princess, so I wrote a book about it. In my Grace of Gods series normal humans find out they possess the souls of Greek Gods within them. They are whisked out of their lives and brought to Mount Olympus, thrust into the new and dramatic lives of their Gods.

Very sad ending and unnecessary
By Amazon Customer
The witch has an ending she doesn't deserve because of all the evil done to her and she did start out as a decent, loving person. As a result Ella who is Mrs Claus and brings about her death comes across as cruel and unforgiving because by your deeds are you known. This detracts from the whole message of Christmas which is one of salvation, joy, and forgiveness. This was a great story up until that moment when Ella brought about the witch's death by her actions and lying by saying she didn't harm her. She just made it possible for someone else do it and still bares the sinking of murder. Think of the witch as being like Scrooge who had started out decent. Should Dickens have killed Scrooge as punishment for his misdeeds? Of course not. The witch should have been saved through the use of Christmas magic. A very good story has been destroyed by a horrible non Christmas ending.

Wonderfully imagined and well executed this tale is certainly worthy of five stars from me.
By S.I. Hayes
Davin's hard pressed to lose his arrogance. But there are other things that try his time and patience, and soon he finds himself surrounded by the truth of the matter. Christmas and the "Santa Claus" thing is far more than he bargained for, when the attacks start and he chooses to believe it really gets weird. And there's this Hilarious PLOT TWIST!!

But I won't tell you, what I can tell you is that this Fairy Tale opens the lines of the others. It shows that the previous books are interconnected. Characters and environments are revisited from Desecrated Beauty and Mionanamithe which was unexpected but delightful o have happen, so you do want to read those to understand their significance in this tale.

By Indiquinn
I love my adult version fairy tales and this book is no exception. Hawt steamy sex, wonderfully twisted versions of the classic fairy tales and my favorite, a happy ending. "Am I strange for going along with this?". Davin gets lost, but ends up finding himsef in the Winterlands. And the strangest thing of all is that he discovers that he is the newly appointed Santa. "False hope is worse than no hope at all.". But things are never easy when the hope of Christmas has all but been torn away from everyone by an evil witch. Can Davin bring back hope and most of all to himself? "Like our love, that's the true magic of Christmas."

Design of Experiments Using The Taguchi Approach: 16 Steps to Product and Process Improvement, by Ranjit K. Roy

Fulfill the practical potential of DOE-with a powerful, 16-step approach for applying the Taguchi method

Over the past decade, Design of Experiments (DOE) has undergone great advances through the work of the Japanese management guru Genechi Taguchi. Yet, until now, books on the Taguchi method have been steeped in theory and complicated statistical analysis. Now this trailblazing work translates the Taguchi method into an easy-to-implement 16-step system.

Based on Ranjit Roy's successful Taguchi training course, this extensively illustrated book/CD-ROM package gives readers the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and apply the Taguchi method to engineering projects-from theory and applications to hands-on analysis of the data. It is suitable for managers and technicians without a college-level engineering or statistical background, and its self-study pace-with exercises included in each chapter-helps readers start using Taguchi DOE tools on the job quickly. Special features include:
* An accompanying CD-ROM of Qualitek-4 software, which performs calculations and features all example experiments described in the book
* Problem-solving exercises relevant to actual engineering situations, with solutions included at the end of the text
* Coverage of two-, three-, and four-level factors, analysis of variance, robust designs, combination designs, and more

Engineers and technical personnel working in process and product design-as well as other professionals interested in the Taguchi method-will find this book/CD-ROM a tremendously important and useful asset for making the most of DOE in their work.

Review
"An excellent book for any practicing engineers who are interested in using Taguchi's approach in optimizing and characterizing a process. Dr. Roy's step-by-step method outlined in the book does not require the readers to have any prior statistical knowledge to understand Taguchi's approach to Design of Experiments..." --Marcus Khoo, Quality Manager, Agilent Technologies, Inc.

"Per student evaluations (including my own!), Ranjit Roy is one of the best instructors that anyone is likely to meet. This is especially remarkable considering that Dr. Roy specializes in a very difficult subject: making Design of Experiments (DoE) easy to understand and accessible to everyone. His software, Qualitek 4, based upon his experience in doing real experiments and teaching other engineers to do experiments, established the benchmark in how to make this type of software useful and user friendly. While traditional classes in designed experiments spend considerable time teaching engineers how to do the mathematical analysis of these studies (yawn), Ranjit likes to teach engineers how to do experiments using software that automatically designs the experiment, analyzes the data, and prints reports (with graphics) that can immediately be shared in management or team meetings. Now Ranjit has taken about fifteen years of experience in teaching these types of classes, and has made it available to everyone in a recent book published by John Wiley & Sons, Wiley-Interscience Professional/Trade Division.

"This book is written for people who want to learn a method for designing and analyzing simple experiments with the goal of helping the reader apply these techniques in their own work environment. I believe this book will be particularly helpful to engineers (Black Belts or Green Belts) trying to learn the technique of designed experiments as taught in the Six Sigma process. This book is a "must have" for anyone who currently uses, or who wants to learn to use, Ranjit's software. Others will want to purchase this book for the very plentiful and helpful case studies taken from real life experiences. Dr. Roy provides resources for three key elements of the learning process: brief discussions of applicable theory, step-by-step application of the concepts, and fully functional software to use with the stories/examples in the book.

"Explanations of theory are simple and elegant. For example, in explaining to the reader the concept of "Degrees Of Freedom", Ranjit writes, "Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) is an indication of the amount of information contained in a data set. For example, if there are three numbers in a data set, the DOF=3-1, which indicates the amount of additional information that can be derived by taking the differences among the three numbers. Looked at in another way, if there are three people, you will need two comparisons to determine who is tallest." No wonder engineers like to take Dr. Roy's classes!

"Dr. Roy provides sixteen steps to learn designed experiments and apply the methods to any problem. These steps include topics such as: Dr. Taguchi's philosophy, the definition of quality and how to measure it, the logic behind experimental design analysis methods, the use of orthogonal arrays, two-level experiments, three-level experiments, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), interactions, mixed level factors, combination designs, strategies for robust design, signal-to-noise ratios, experiments with multiple criteria, how to quantify improvement, experiment preparation and planning, and even more case studies (a special chapter of added examples in addition to the plentiful examples provided in each of the above mentioned topics). Each step is a chapter, and each chapter: starts with a learning objective, provides learning by going through examples using software, and then ends with: a "question and answer" dialogue based upon Ranjit's teaching experience, a chapter summary, additional exercises, and software solutions for these exercises. Readers will especially appreciate material in the book that is original with Ranjit himself: the development of overall evaluation criteria for studies with multiple responses, and the use of a "severity index" to quantify the strength of an interaction...

"Ranjit makes it clear that this book is intended for beginners who want to get started. He only covers Taguchi's static robustness studies (even though the software is capable of dynamic studies), and tells the reader that, "As you gain application experience, you will find it necessary to refer to other books to develop clearer concepts of the mathematical treatments." Readers check assumptions in their analysis by doing a confirmation experiment to see if the result of setting factors at the perceived best levels falls within a confidence interval provided by the software.

"No book is perfect. Critics may say that some of the definitions are weak (for example, "system design" is defined as the "design of a product or process using special Taguchi techniques"), that some areas are too simplified (not enough emphasis on assumptions used in the analysis, no explanation of the distinction between data replication and repetition, no mention that the Cpk analysis is only applicable if the process is stable), and that in certain situations the software is weak (Dr. Roy warns the reader that the software will not correctly calculate confidence intervals if the Degrees Of Freedom are less than three, and that in some situations the software will only allow you to use an 80% confidence interval). No doubt, the biggest criticism of the book is that the reader will learn how to use many features of the software that they will not be able to later apply unless they purchase the full software package.

"Nevertheless, a beginner can learn designed experiments with this book, and can make a great deal of progress using L8 arrays (in fact, the technique of designed experiments is so powerful that readers may be able to purchase software for their entire company based upon the savings associated with the application of one good L8 experiment!). So, if you have ever thought about doing experiments but have never quite felt comfortable enough to get started ? get this book and get going. We have Ranjit to thank for taking the fear out of the process and providing engineers with simple explanations, examples, and software to quickly build the self-confidence needed to get real results." --Larry R. Smith, Quality and Reliability Manager, Ford Motor Company

"This is one of the few books I have read that successfully covers the subject of design of experiments..." --Herzl Marouni, ABS QE Inc., Houston, TX

An Introduction to More Effective Experimentation
By Gerald Entine
The challenge that all research directors and senior scientists face is that virtually all scientists are originally trained to believe that the only proper way to conduct an experiment is to vary only one factor at a time while holding all other variables fixed. This belief, which can be shown mathematically to be totally incorrect, has been a drag on the scientific community for decades, causing experimental science to be much less productive than it should be. In fact, by properly designing experiments in which several factors are varied in a carefully thought out, predetermined pattern, much more information can be obtained with far fewer experiments.
What Dr. Roy has achieved in his book on experimental design is to clearly explain why this is so and to provide the tools which allows his readers to overcome their ingrained beliefs and adopt a more effective method of designing their own experimental programs.
Of particular interest is his discussion of experimental design using orthogonal arrays (Chapter 4) for it is in this part of the book that the full power of modern approaches to experimentation become most evident. Here, he illustrates how a set of as few as eight experiments can be used to determine how three presumable independent factors, such as time, temperature and concentration, can be studied to obtain detailed information not only on how each factor individually effects the quality of the final product, but also on the extent to which the factors interact.
Historically, learning this type of technique for designing experiments has been a daunting task since somewhat tedious mathematically manipulations are required for both the design of the experiment and the analyses of the resulting data. However, included with Dr. Roy's book is complete software which eliminates the need for the experimenter to either manually solve the handful of equations needed to extract the results in useful form, or to develop custom spreadsheets in an attempt to automate the process. The software is easy to use and includes all of the tables and data which are used in the book to illustrate the principles of experimental design. The software is also capable of assisting the experimenter in designing sets of up to eight concurrent experiments, rapidly analyzing the data and generating graphical and tabular presentations which greatly aid in the interpretation of the results.
This is an extremely useful book which can have a major beneficial effect on the productivity of any laboratory engaged in experimental process research such as crystal growth, chemical synthesis or manufacturing. By allowing the reader to overcome his innate aversion to varying more than one experimental factor at a time, the book makes it possible for the reader to become a much more productive scientist or engineer and become a role model for his coworkers to emulate.

The real heart of this book is the combination of software with examples. The book takes the reader through the software frame by frame, showing you where to click, what the output looks like, and how to interpret this output. The software provided with the book is fully functional with the data from the examples used in the book. Named one of Kirkus's Best Nonfiction Books of 2015

The House of Twenty Thousand Books is the story of Chimen Abramsky, an extraordinary polymath and bibliophile who amassed a vast collection of socialist literature and Jewish history. For more than fifty years Chimen and his wife, Miriam, hosted epic gatherings in their house of books that brought together many of the age’s greatest thinkers.

The atheist son of one of the century’s most important rabbis, Chimen was born in 1916 near Minsk, spent his early teenage years in Moscow while his father served time in a Siberian labor camp for religious proselytizing, and then immigrated to London, where he discovered the writings of Karl Marx and became involved in left-wing politics. He briefly attended the newly established Hebrew University in Jerusalem, until World War II interrupted his studies. Back in England, he married, and for many years he and Miriam ran a respected Jewish bookshop in London’s East End. When the Nazis invaded Russia in June 1941, Chimen joined the Communist Party, becoming a leading figure in the party’s National Jewish Committee. He remained a member until 1958, when, shockingly late in the day, he finally acknowledged the atrocities committed by Stalin. In middle age, Chimen reinvented himself once more, this time as a liberal thinker, humanist, professor, and manuscripts’ expert for Sotheby’s auction house.

Journalist Sasha Abramsky re-creates here a lost world, bringing to life the people, the books, and the ideas that filled his grandparents’ house, from gatherings that included Eric Hobsbawm and Isaiah Berlin to books with Marx’s handwritten notes, William Morris manuscripts and woodcuts, an early sixteenth-century Bomberg Bible, and a first edition of Descartes’s Meditations. The House of Twenty Thousand Books is a wondrous journey through our times, from the vanished worlds of Eastern European Jewry to the cacophonous politics of modernity.

Review
"This is a fierce and beautiful book. It burns with a passion for ideas, the value of history, the need for argument. As a memoir of a grandfather it is sui generis. I loved it."—Edmund de Waal, author of The Hare with Amber Eyes

"Sasha Abramsky's account of his grandfather's devotion to books and reading is a moving testimonial to the persistance of human curiosity in a world that seems to drift farther and farther from the delight of intellectual pursuits. It is a moving, instructive, astonishing account of one man's love for the printed word that all readers will appreciate. The House of Twenty Thousand Books deserves twenty hundred thousand readers. — Alberto Manguel

“The House of Twenty Thousand Bookslovingly recreates an intellectual milieu that was built around old books, chess games, Russian dominoes, Eastern European food, hot tea, family and long evenings spent in spirited political debate." —Michael Dirda,The Washington Post

"[Sasha Abramsky] has a knack for swimming deep in the sea of ideas... [He] offers smart, concise pocket explanations of matters ranging from the effect of 18th-century French utopianism on leftist thinking to brief discourses on methodologies of Talmud study...Drawing on numerous interviews with Chimen’s contemporaries and an impressively deep dive into the archives, the book grapples sensitively and honestly with how many of the conversations at 5 Hillway were conducted...In his grandson’s loving, but intellectually responsible tribute, Chimen Abramsky has found his posterity.”—Jeremy Dauber,The Wall Street Journal

“An evocative, often affecting and remarkably candid chronicle of Chimen [Abramsky’s] life...One of the strategies I most admired about this book is that Sasha chooses to offer succinct essays about the ideas, historical events and personalities that animated his grandfather. Sasha is so vivid a writer that scenes linger in the memory...For anyone who cannot throw away a book, even if it will never be read and even if it ends up crowding a home,The House of Twenty Thousand Booksis an affirmation.” —Joseph Berger,Haaretz

"Vividly written and well-researched, Abramsky’s memoir is seldom less than absorbing.” —Jacob Heilbrunn,The National Interest

"A narrative that tells the tale of the 20thcentury: communists, zionists, fascists, fetishists, secularists and a great scene of academic intrigue. Chimen Abramsky is a worthy subject: his unorthodox intellectual approach and his awe-inspiring collection of books are both marvels to behold. While Abramsky’s grandson writes the story of his life with subtlety and affection, he also evokes the culture of the time in all its foolishness, grandeur, earnestness and ideological disappointment." —Jeff Deutsch, Seminary Co-op Bookstore

“[A]warmhearted, frank memoir...Abramsky shares fascinating stories of British intellectual luminaries like Eric Hobsbawm and Isaiah Berlin who were regular visitors to 5 Hillway or close friends of his grandfather...as much as this book is the story of a life of the mind, it's also a tender account of the way this increasingly dilapidated, book-crammed home became for an adoring grandson, 'my school, my university, my library, my sanctuary when the going got tough at home.' Balancing that affection with a sense of awe at the story of his grandfather's fascinating life, Sasha Abramsky has produced a work that will appeal to book lovers and readers of family memoir.” —Harvey Freedenberg,Shelf Awareness

“Sasha Abramsky’s account rambles into marvelously eclectic corners, from the authentication of incunabula, to the differences between vellum and parchment, to the Rabbinic position on pigskin bindings...Certainly Chimen’s lifelong friendships with Isaiah Berlin, Piero Sraffa, and other twentieth century thinkers will interest many readers. But the most fascinating story is the evolution of Chimen himself—the son with serious rabbinicyichiswho rejected religion but ran two Seders a year and never servedtreyfin his home; the Party member so faithful he eulogized Stalin, until he discovered the lies and turned in his membership card; the book dealer who spent decades curating an exhaustive collection of Socialist literature, only to become one of Europe’s leading collectors of Judaica. Historians of the Old and New Left movements in Britain, students of Jewish history and philosophy, and book-lovers of any stripe will find this memoir totally absorbing.” —Bettina Birch,Jewish Book World

"The sheer richness of this marvelous book— in terms of its style, think Borges, Perec—amply complements the wondrous complexity of the family—in terms of its subject matter, think the Eitingons, the Ephrussi—about which Sasha Abramsky writes so lovingly. And as a portrait of London’s left-wing Jewish intellectual life it is surely without equal."—Simon Winchester, author of The Professor and the Mad Man

"Transformative journeys were undertaken by more than a million Russian Jews between the 1890s and 1920s, expelled by successive waves of pogroms, revolution, civil war and persecution. Sasha Abramsky’s tender, intelligent, many-layered memoir of his grand-parents, The House of Twenty Thousand Books, is a version of this same story, at once epic and intimate, rooted in family life but encompassing the sweep of history. At its heart are loss and renewal, tradition and reinvention, schism and continuity."—Rebecca Abrams, Financial Times

"A wonderful celebration of the mind, history, and love."—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

"This utterly remarkable book vividly captures a lost world.” —Library Journal

"Sasha Abramsky has produced a wonderful addition to the canon of Jewish grandchild literature: one that would be well worth its place in Chimen Abramsky’s now immortal house of books."—Toby Lichtig, The Times Literary Supplement

"Sasha Abramsky has combined four kinds of history —familial, political, Jewish, and literary—into one brilliant and compelling book. With him as an erudite and sensitive guide, any reader will be grateful for the opportunity to be immersed into the house of twenty thousand books."—Samuel G. Freedman

"The book succeeds marvelously. . . . The descriptions of the atmosphere of the Abramsky house itself are ravishing, and Sasha telegraphs his childlike delight in cradling his patrimony."—Vladislav Davidzon, Tablet

"Abramsky’s tale begins after his grandfather Chimen’s death, with his family faced with the daunting task of cleaning out a London house filled to bursting with books, many of them rare, on Marxism, socialism, and Judaica. Doing so stirred the desire to make sense of this literary and familial legacy, which Abramsky chronicles in a loving but clear-eyed manner." —Publishers Weekly

“The House of Twenty Thousand Booksis an entertaining and passionate mix of genealogy, bibliomania and intellectual history and is a must read for the those of us living with books.” —Michael Lieberman,Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"Memorialising an epoch in Jewish life, [Abramsky] mixes the visual with the instructive in a way that could inspire a television series." --The Jewish Chronicle

"I loved this touching and heartfelt celebration of a scholar, teacher and bibliophile, a man whose profound learning was fine-tempered by humane wisdom and self-knowledge. We might all of us envy Sasha Abramsky in possessing such a remarkable grandfather, heroic in his integrity and evoked for us here with real eloquence and affection." --Jonathan Keates

"...wonderfully warm and evocative" --Peter Dreier, Huffington Post

"The House of Twenty Thousand Booksis a grandson's elegy for the vanished world of his grandparents’ house in London and the exuberant, passionate jostling of two traditions – Jewish and Marxist – that intertwined in his growing up. It is a fascinating memoir of the fatal encounter between Russian Jewish yearning for freedom and the Stalinist creed, a grandson's unsparing, but loving reckoning with a conflicted inheritance. In the digital age, it will also make you long for the smell of old books, the dust on shelves and the collector's passions, all on display inThe House of Twenty Thousand Books." —Michael Ignatieff

The Red House at 5 Hillway
By Christian Schlect
A grandson's well-written tribute to grandparents, especially the grandfather, who valued family and books and their common Jewish intellectual heritage, The long life-span of the two allows for thoughts on political subjects from the end of the Russian czar, through Hitler's reign, to the eventual fall of the Berlin Wall. And allows for musings on what makes for a good life.

I found most interesting the material in this book related to the Stalin era and the one time devotion by this intelligent couple, located in England but with roots in Eastern Europe, to a political cause that failed so miserably.

The role of religious symbols and traditions, even in the absence of explicit faith, is also a theme that is explored with much insight by Mr. Abramsky.

Finally, book collectors will enjoy reading about a high priest of their calling.

It is beautifully written and takes the reader back to a time ...
By Gerald Singleton
While I have been a fan of most of Mr. Abramsky's books (particularly those on poverty in modern America and the inequities of out broken criminal justice system), I was absolutely blown away by this book. It is beautifully written and takes the reader back to a time and place which exists nowhere but in the memories of people (like Mr. Abramsky) who were fortunate enough to know the wonderful characters who populate this work. If a novelist had attempted to create a character like Chaim Abramsky, no one would have believed he could have existed. I cannot recommend "The House of Twenty Thousand Books" strongly enough.
