Greatest tactics primer ever
By mike's brother
If you are looking for a tactics book of the "verbal-explanation" type rather than of the "worbook-with-lots-of-problems-to-solve" type, then Predator at the Chessboard Volumes I & II blow the competition away (including the tactics books by Seirawan/Silman and Alburt/Palatnik).

Table of Contents (1st edition, copyright 2007; no new editions as of date of this review):
Vol I chapters: "Introduction", "The Double Attack" (further divided into forks from each piece), and "The Discovered Attack" (subdivided into discovered attacks from each piece)
Vol II chapters : "The Pin and Skewer", "Removing the Guard", and "Mating Patterns" (subdivided into back rank and classic mates)

This book is superior to other beginner tactics books for 3 reasons:

1. Appropriate difficulty for intended audience: Many chess authors have forgotten what a "beginner" is. Farnsworth shows you several easier positions illustrating the same motif/theme then logically and incrementally progresses to more difficult versions of the theme (for instance, from the simple find-the-bishop-fork to find-the-bishop-fork-in-three). Most of the examples in Predator at the Chessboard are 1-3 moves in depth, completely appropriate for a beginner. There isn't much in terms of lengthy alternative sidelines of analysis (>5 moves for instance) that would clearly make this book beyond a beginner/lower level (you will find lots of such lengthy analysis and difficult problems in the Seirawan/Silman and Palatnik/Alburt "beginner" tactics books).

2. Thinking method: Farnsworth doesn't give a thinking method per se, but he repetitively states simple things to think about when approaching a position, which can be helpful for someone learning tactics.

3. Numerous examples: There are greater than 1000 positions in both volumes and thus he provides dozens of examples of any given motif from simple to complex, thoroughly reinforcing the material, whereas other books show a couple token positions then proceed to give you very difficult problems.

Thus Predator at the Chessboard is accessible to the beginner/lower-level player, provides many logically progressive examples of a given motif from simple to slightly more complex, and provides verbal explanations about how to think about these tactics.

Criticisms of the book:
1. Expensive: cost me around $65 for 2 volumes hardcover, but since this is the only "verbal-explanation" type tactics book that a beginner/lower-level player needs, I believe it is money well spent if you love to play chess.
2. The 2 volumes should be 1 volume that is 700+ pages, in my opinion.
3. He uses his own notation which is not quite algebraic (for instance, RxN might mean "rook takes knight"). His book is still very easy to follow...I simply prefer algebraic notation, which is also very easy to follow.
4. I wish that the entire line of play for each position was listed at the end of its corresponding explanatory paragraph (preferably in algebraic notation). Not only would it be a nice quick summary, but also would be good practice for those wanting to solve the >1000 positions without wading through the paragraph explanations.

Nothing beats solving thousands of tactics problems such as offered on several well known websites. In spite of this and the above criticisms, I still give this book 5 stars because it is far and away the greatest "verbal-explanation" beginner tactics primer I have ever encountered ever.

Of course, he offers this material free on his website (you can google his name and/or Predator at the Chessboard), but it is nice to have books for those times when is no internet or computer, if I am indefinitely stuck in a line, waiting room, or side of a road, and at bedtime without having to worry about lugging around my laptop and adaptor plug.

For the rest of us
By Amazon Customer
I have probably not gotten through quite 10% of this book yet, but I am extremely pleased. I am getting the answers that I have been searching for. How do you set up a pin? How do other players see what I am not seeing? What are the different ways to use this information?

The author of this book has the insights that I need, but much more important, he has taken the time and effort to explain all those smaller details of seeing and setting up the tactical configurations that win material and game, and most important, give you the chance to take more control of the game.

Eliminate luck and hope from the game and set up those powerful tactical maneuvers that are part of a great, artistic chess game.

I know there are lots of people who do not play tournaments, but love the game and art of chess. We don't aspire to become masters, but want to learn and understand the artistry and skills of tactical play. We don't have the time to struggle with deep discussions and try to see further into a masters explanation of high level skills, but we want to 'see' more. So much of this game is about visualization, and Mr. Farnsworth will guide you through the complexities of seeing in a manner that will actually be fun and entertaining and enlightening.

I read, study and review the information in this book everyday, and enjoy doing it. I highly recommend this book for the rest of us.

Best tactics book - period
By Joseph D. Phelps
I have read/studies at least 20 chess tactics books and this one (with its companion book) is by far the best. The author not only give great examples of tactical motifs but he goes into incredible detail explaining the thought process one should follow when looking for the tactic in question. An example would be when he explains that anytime two of you opponent pieces and your knight are all on squares of the same color and in close proximity you should look for a fork. This seems self explanatory (after he tells you) but I just never approached looking for forks that way. Go to the authors website to practice your tactics and to find more info on these books.

Mapping Latin America: A Cartographic ReaderFrom University Of Chicago Press

For many, a map is nothing more than a tool used to determine the location or distribution of something—a country, a city, or a natural resource. But maps reveal much more: to really read a map means to examine what it shows and what it doesn’t, and to ask who made it, why, and for whom. The contributors to this new volume ask these sorts of questions about maps of Latin America, and in doing so illuminate the ways cartography has helped to shape this region from the Rio Grande to Patagonia.

In Mapping Latin America,Jordana Dym and Karl Offen bring together scholars from a wide range of disciplines to examine and interpret more than five centuries of Latin American maps.Individual chapters take on maps of every size and scale and from a wide variety of mapmakers—from the hand-drawn maps of Native Americans, to those by famed explorers such as Alexander von Humboldt, to those produced in today’s newspapers and magazines for the general public. The maps collected here, and the interpretations that accompany them, provide an excellent source to help readers better understand how Latin American countries, regions, provinces, and municipalities came to be defined, measured, organized, occupied, settled, disputed, and understood—that is, how they came to have specific meanings to specific people at specific moments in time.

The first book to deal with the broad sweep of mapping activities across Latin America, this lavishly illustrated volume will be required reading for students and scholars of geography and Latin American history, and anyone interested in understanding the significance of maps in human cultures and societies.

Review
“Mapping Latin America . . . is the first publication that takes on the ambitious and long overdue task of showcasing the crucial role that maps have played in shaping human communities across the entire region and, no less importantly, in demonstrating their value to students and scholars alike in gaining new insights into the societies that produced them. . . . [T]he volume succeeds admirably in demonstrating that scholars of colonial and modern periods alike would do well to take seriously the role of space and spatial representation in the shaping of Latin America’s societies, cultures, and environments. This book will appeal not only to students and scholars of Latin America but to anyone with an interest in critical studies of cartography and visual culture.” (Heidi V. Scott, University of Massachusetts, Amherst Imago Mundi)

“[Mapping Latin America] adds a unique and valuable perspective about the region. . . . Recommended.” (L. Yachner Choice)

“This compendium will appeal to a diverse array of groups, from the casual reader to the most avid ‘map geek’. . . . The accompanying essays do an excellent job of situating each map in the appropriate political, economic and/or cultural context, and the book can thus be read in its entirety or used as a resource to shed light on a particular place and time in the region's history. As such, it would be a good addition to the bookshelves of many scholars interested in the geography or history of Latin America, clearly illustrating the power of maps.” (Edward L. Jackiewicz, California State University, Northridge Journal of Latin American Studies)

“This is one of the most important books to have appeared on a Latin American topic in the last quarter century and beyond. . . . What this superb volume does is inspire one to look and think, and thus hopefully to promote a deeper understanding of the representation of meaningful spatial distributions.” (David J. Robinson, Syracuse University Journal of Latin American Geography)

“This volume, which serves as a source of original insights about particular times and places as well as a methodological primer for use in the classroom, will without doubt catalyze even greater interest in the roles of those and other types of maps in Latin American history.” (Andrew Sluyter, Louisiana State University Hispanic American Historical Review)

“Ambitious and wide-ranging, . . . Mapping Latin America is an excellent resource for undergraduate instructors who can use these maps as primary documents to explore major themes and developments in Latin American history. That the volume’s contributors are experts across a wide range of disciplines illustrates the interdisciplinary interest in, and relevance of, these maps. The reader will also likely inspire greater critical cartographical readings of graphic texts among geographers and historians alike.” (Sarah A. Blue, Texas State University Journal of Historical Geography)

“Mapping Latin America offers a new kind of map history, one that brilliantly combines interdisciplinary approaches to maps that range over many centuries, producing insightful essays that ground the maps firmly in the societies that created and consumed them. It sets a significant new standard both for the history of cartography in Latin America and for the study of cartography itself.”

(David Rumsey, Cartography Associates, David Rumsey Map Collection)

“Mapping Latin America gathers together the foremost scholars of cartography and Latin American history. The novel format of the work allows Jordana Dym and Karl Offen to present a stunning range of cartographic materials, all carefully contextualized by the outstanding scholarship of the authors, which notably includes assessment of the contributions of indigenous cultures. Illustrating over five hundred years of mapping, this work is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the history of Latin America.”

(Neil L. Whitehead, University of Wisconsin–Madison)

“In a single volume, featuring fifty-seven succinct yet authoritative chapters, Dym and Offen have not only remapped the field of Latin American historical cartography, but have also charted a new path for critical map studies. More than a millennium’s time depth and a continent’s expanse are surveyed with fascinating details and composite illumination. Area specialists, devoted cartophiles, and adventuresome readers in general will find this collection a delight.”

(Kent Mathewson, Louisiana State University)

Impressive and well-developed history of Latin American cartography
By Gerardo Castillo
This book, edited by the historian Jordana Dym and the geographer Karl Offen, offers a superb example of an interdisciplinary approach. The fifty-seven articles/chapters, which make a review of Latin American history from the Sixteen Century to nowadays, involve topics ranging from environmental issues to landscape politics, including ideas of order, State-building, etnhicity, resistance, and urban planning. In addition, the edition is carefully presented with colorfull and detailed illustrations. In my opinion, this is an outstanding publication on Latin American cartography.

From the richest Romans to the robber barons to today's bankers and tech billionaires, Sam Wilkin offers Freakonomics-esque insights into what it really takes to make a fortune. These stories of larger-than-life characters, strategies, and sacrifices reveal how the wealthiest did it, usually by a passion for finding loopholes, working around bureaucratic systems, and creating obstacles to competitors.

WEALTH SECRETS OF THE ONE PERCENT gets at the heart of our feelings about the 1% of top income earners and the roughly 0.0001% who achieve billionaire status: we love to hate them, but we'd love to be them. Wilkin's insight into the sources of wealth is thought-provoking and rigorous, and he reveals that behind almost every great fortune is a "wealth secret"--a moneymaking technique designed to defeat the forces of market competition.

Freakonomics meets Malcolm Gladwell
By Martin
Rated at 5 stars in part due to the irresponsible review by Yves, who clearly hasn't read the book. "Network network network" isn't about networking, it's about network effects, an economic principle. "You've got to own it" isn't about owning your own business, indeed the author says owning your own business isn't a wealth secret. I guess Yves just skimmed the headings.

Essentially, this is a book about the economic principles that enable some entrepreneurs to become so much richer than others. To understand these economic principles (which the author calls "wealth secrets") you've got to read the book, because the lengthy stories of different entrepreneurs in each chapter explain how people put each principle into practice, in different times and places (from ancient Rome to modern-day India to the tech sector!).

"Freakonomics meets Malcolm Gladwell" is how one reviewer described it on Goodreads, and I agree with that. You get the Malcolm Gladwell type of stories, which are well told and witty. And, you end up with Freakonomics type of insights – which explain why doing some things really well will make you rich, while doing other things won't help your pocketbook much at all, no matter how well you do them!!

Fails to Deliver Critical Insight
By Yves
This book promises to take a realistic look at what makes people rich. "Those get rich quick books don't teach you how to become a Mexican telecom mogul," the promotions for this book stated (and which is what intrigued me).

While the premise for this book is well intentioned the author forgets a key rule of writing: BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front). The reader is dragged through chapter after chapter of history and stories, from ancient Romans to robber barrons, while the "wealth secrets" are only distilled in the last chapter. The pledge he promises in the title (the "wealth secrets") are randomly interspersed in each chapter, and never organized until the last one. This lack of follow-through dampens whatever interesting history might be in these pages.

Herein are the "Seven Secrets of Spectacularly Rich People" as Wilkins summarizes in the chapter 7. I recommend saving your money, as in spite of the verbosity of the book, these "secrets" are really quite simple:

1. "Secret #1: Don't be the best. Be the only." This is the key theme of the book. Secure a monopoly on an industry and you will make lots of money.
2. "Secret #2: Bigger is still better." Make your business scalable. Bigger businesses still make more money.
3. "Secret #3: The worst place to do business is really the best." Third world countries and developing markets allow business owners to exploit lax regulation or leverage politics for their own gain.
4. "Secret #4: When lenders can't lose, you win." Not sure what this lesson was about, sorry. The story became too muddled here for my liking.
5. "Secret #5: You've got own it baby, own it." Owning your own company is good?
6. "Secret #6: Spin laws into gold." Take advantage of changes in laws and regulations.
7. "Secret #7: If you want to succeed in business, network, network, network." Self-explanatory.

This book is also about 200 pages too long. $14 is also much too expensive for what it offers. Like most books on wealth, it's probably best suited as a blog post.

An odd book, but a good one
By Edward Durney
Don't judge this book by its title, and especially by its subtitle. This book is not "a modern manual" about anything. And it contains no wealth secrets of the one percent. Indeed, the book doesn't even talk about the one percent. Its focus is the mega-rich -- the about 0.00001% of humanity that through the ages topped the charts of the rich.

Maybe they should even be called the giga-rich. We're not talking many millions of (today's) dollars here. No, these people have many billions. The top 88 families in the world have as much money as the bottom half of humanity. And when you look at the richest in history, you're narrowing it down even further.

This book tells stories of a few of the world's richest people and how they actually made their fortunes. Starting with the Romans and ending with some latter-day tycoons who are just as rich as Croesus. (Croesus was a Greek -- possibly as fictional as Midas -- and does not make Sam Wilkin's book. Instead, we read about Marcus Crassus, a Roman plutocrat who amassed the largest fortune of his time.)

Sam Wilkin knows how to tell a story, making this book a good read. There is some insight as well, both into how to become rich and what being rich really means. In his Notes, Sam Wilkin says: “Whether you read the book as a guide to earning great riches or a social critique is your choice.”

I didn't find the book to be either. Nor is it mainly a humorous book. (Despite its cover, which features a roll of toilet paper made out of $100 bills.) But the book does a good job leavening storytelling and commentary with humor. I was surprised at how much Sam Wilkins could teach and entertain at the same time. Good books, in my mind, are like that.

So instead of being a straightforward history of rich people, a guide to doing business, or an assessment of the impact on society of the richest of the rich, the book’s a humorous and at the same time serious look at how the obscenely rich got obscenely rich. If I had to put a label on it, I'd call it a history, but it’s far from a typical one. No footnotes, but only notes. A lot of commentary and glossing over of details.

Here's how the book's author describes it: “This book began life as a fairly serious commentary on the policy implications of recent research on oligarchy, but spent a long time in gestation and emerged as something rather different. If you are curious about the original arguments in the book, and would be interested to hear me credit one-percenters with driving economic progress in some of the world’s best-performing economies, you can find it here: Wilkin, Sam. 2011. 'Can Bad Governance Be Good for Development?' Survival, 61-76."

If you are looking for more of a manual on how to get obscenely rich, Sam Wilkin points out two books that look more at how to do that, but have some of the same ideas that he does: Why Moats Matter: The Morningstar Approach to Stock Investing and Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future.

Guibert of Nogent's Chronicle of the First Crusade
By Mithridates VI of Pontus
Guibert of Nogent (1055-1124) was a Benedictine abbot, writer, and historian. He is best known for writing the first (and perhaps one of the strangest) autobiographies since Augustine's Confessions. In addition, and lesser known, was his substantial skill in writing histories. The Deeds of God Through the Franks, although not popular in its day, is an important history of the time - and our knowledge of the author himself is greater than any other historian of the period. The Deeds of God through the Franks was written between 1106-1109, only ten years later than the period between Urban's call for Crusade and the capture of Jerusalem 1099. Guibert of Nogent was not an eyewitness of the Crusade (he was an abbot of a dinky 8 person monastery near Laon France) however, his primary source, the Gesta Francorum, which he added and subtracted from is generally considered a eye-witness document. Guibert rewrote the Gesta with highly elaborate diction and added an entirely new tone, that of the "providential nature of the accomplishment" (pg 2) (the capture of Jerusalem). This tone change is easily seen in the cases of the title words - "through" instead of "by" the Franks. Despite the fact that his is a revision of an earlier chronicle, Guibert's reactions, and the French reaction to the Crusade are important indicators of prevalent opinion. Also, perhaps even more interestingly, Guibert saw the notorious Peter the Hermit, who mobilized so many peasants and other poorly armed Europeans soon to be massacred in Asia Minor before the main armies arrived. Guibert is delightfully contemptuous of the preacher.

The introduction to the volume is superb. Levine lays out all relevant background information and substantial textual analysis of Guibert's revision of the Gesta Francorum. Despite fact that the volume is lacking an index, maps, or facing page Latin text, the notes are substantial and very useful for the reader. Initially published in 1997 as a 100$ hardback, the price tag on this reprint makes this an even better deal. A must by for the Crusade enthusiast or Medieval historian!
