highly recommended for anyone who has mental illness
By Kathleen
Lots of mental illness in my family; some schizoid affective cousins, a bipolar aunt, a major depressive grandmother...this disease is no joke and the stigma attached to it sickens me. This book comes directly from the author's experiences with schizophrenia as an adolescent and her slow, difficult descent from hellish madness. I read this originally as a teen and didn't comprehend it, although I knew it somehow registered with the experiences I had with family members. Re-reading it in my 50s it all makes sense...highly, highly recommended for anyone who has mental illness, loves someone with mental illness, has mental illness of any sort in their family or among their friends. Compassion is needed to help this disease.

A Difficult Read but Worth It
By K. Hudecek
This book is not a book for entertainment, unless you are into mental illness and being inside a psychiatric hospital in the mid-to-late 1940s or early 1950s. You won't find anything about the horrible conditions of the hospital nor will you find the patients to be anything less than human beings with real problems that seemingly have no resolutions.

The main character is a high-school girl by the name of Deborah Blau. She has created the world of Yr in her head and lives between here, meaning the world most of us live in, and there. "There" being Yr. She has created gods in Yr, a few of them she can call friends. There is another language she speaks that is of Yr origin. There is a system of justice and punishment. She is the only one who knows of this place until she slowly lets in Dr. Fried, whom she refers to as Furii.

The book follows Deborah's relationships with her doctor, other patients, friends, and family. It vividly describes Yr and how she feels when she is there and what drives her to go there. Ultimately, it tells the story of living with schizophrenia and the struggle of a young woman to cope with and overcome the condition.

This is a hard read, one of the hardest I've ever read. I would go as far as to say it is arduous. The book has a copyright of 1964 and some of the words are hard to understand because nobody uses them anymore. The story sometimes gets a little dry, but you can't help but cheer for Deborah for every victory she has. Likewise, it's sad when she has setbacks.

It's worth the time it took to read. I can't say I particularly enjoyed it, but I did learn a lot and it renewed my respect for the mentally ill and the doctors who care for them. Sometimes it's good to get a refresher and a new appreciation.

Haunting story, even years later
By Zara Hoffman
I originally read this book 5 years ago. The story haunted me so much that it stayed with me in the forerfont of my mind for two years. Then high school happened and now in my first year of college, I find myself returning to the story to write a paper. Having read Girl, Interrupted and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Signet) in the interim, my understanding of the material has changed and grown. Even so, the experience of the book was just as powerful, if not more so, than my first reading. I recommend this book to everyone.

The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl, by Ree Drummond

My name is Ree. Some folks know me as "The Pioneer Woman."

After years of living in Los Angeles, I made a pit stop in my hometown in Oklahoma on the way to a new, exciting life in Chicago. It was during my stay at home that I met Marlboro Man, a mysterious cowboy with steely blue eyes and a muscular, work-honed body. A strict vegetarian, I fell hard and fast, and before I knew it we were married and living on his ranch in the middle of nowhere, taking care of animals, and managing a brood of four young children. I had no idea how I'd wound up there, but I knew it was exactly where I belonged.

The Pioneer Woman Cooks is a homespun collection of photography, rural stories, and scrumptious recipes that have defined my experience in the country. I share many of the delicious cowboy-tested recipes I've learned to make during my years as an accidental ranch wife—including Rib-Eye Steak with Whiskey Cream Sauce, Lasagna, Fried Chicken, Patsy's Blackberry Cobbler, and Cinnamon Rolls—not to mention several "cowgirl-friendly" dishes, such as Sherried Tomato Soup, Olive Cheese Bread, and CrÈme BrÛlÉe. I show my recipes in full color, step-by-step detail, so it's as easy as pie to follow along.

You'll also find colorful images of rural life: cows, horses, country kids, and plenty of chaps-wearing cowboys.

I hope you get a kick out of this book of mine. I hope it makes you smile. I hope the recipes bring you recognition, accolades, and marriage proposals. And I hope it encourages even the most harried urban cook to slow down, relish the joys of family, nature, and great food, and enjoy life.

From Publishers Weekly
Blogger-turned-author Drummond gives readers a slice of frontier life in this likeable-enough collection of recipes and dispatches from the Oklahoma ranch she shares with her husband and children. Replicating the step-by-step photography that made her blog such a hit, Drummond walks readers through dishes ranging from simple-Guacamole, Chili, Artichoke Dip-to more complex, such as from-scratch Cinnamon Rolls and Sherried Tomato Soup. Drummond's careful coaching will help anyone intimidated by the kitchen fearlessly crank out favorites like Chicken Fried Steak, Meat Loaf and Rib Eye Steak with Whiskey Cream Sauce. While the recipes are reliable home cooking standards, relentless references to her husband, known as the Marlboro Man, range from distracting to juvenile, giving what could have been a comfort food classic the feel of a junior-high class project.

Favorite Cooking Show and Books
By Sondra G. Oravetz
Ree Drummond's cook books are impressive!

First, the quality of her books is top notch - nice thick pages, beautiful photography with the step-by-step processes, maybe something I didn't need but still impressive for those that do, simple uncomplicated recipes which are easy to read and a winning personality that comes through on every page. Her recipes are down home, old school good and delicious. She cooks like my grandmother cooked - simple, uncomplicated, get the job done with delicious results. I never remember as a child having a bad meal at my grandmother's table.

You think maybe we have lost something in this country when it comes to cooking? Between the media, medical profession and the food manufacturing (especially the soy growers) industry, which has influenced the first two, we have been driven like cattle down a path of very unhealthy eating for decades. Chemicals, soy additives and hormones have replaced fresh, organic and healthy foods. People have become lazy and negligent about what they eat and most of the time reach for something easy and quick. No wonder so many people are over weight and unhealthy. Remember meat producers do use a bizillion pounds of soy byproducts in cattle, pig and chicken feed annually and we eat the byproducts of that adulterated feeding habits.

There is nothing wrong with butter instead of chemical laden margarine. Whole milk is good and has good fats and nutrients. Good quality lard, bacon and beef is healthy for us. Chickens raised w/o hormones and grass fed should be the norm in our diets. I believe that Ree tries most of the time to avoid adulterated foods but if on a rare occasion you wish to indulge in a Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie made with Cool Whip and Oreo cookies it probably won't kill you if you maintain a healthy diet the other 99% of the time. Love many of her recipes but not all of them so one has to be their own best judge when it comes to the foods they cook and eat. Her Fettucini Alfredo is natural with nothing but cream, butter and cheese - nothing wrong there. Her soups, stews, meats, roasts, salads, pasta and most desserts are all made from natural products so what can be wrong with that - good, delicious, healthy and nutritious fare. I might avoid Cool Whip but the rest of her recipes are worth the try. Clearly her family burns a lot of calories throughout their day and therefore can consume more food including desserts than many of the rest of us sedentary folks so be mindful that maybe a dessert after every meal is not in your best interest or a plate full of mashed potatoes loaded down with cream cheese. Some of her recipes are best reserved for special occasions or once in a while. I'm a great cook but I know one thing, after many decades of avoiding making pie crusts, with many failures in the past using oils and being the embarrassment of my Grandmother, I finally was successful using her recipe for making a pie crust using BUTTER! It was delicious and a real testament to her photos, techniques and ingredients.

Love her books, recipes, appreciate her warm friendly manner, the obvious closeness of her family and her willingness to share all of this with the rest of us. I'm a fan and will continue to be one as long as she sticks to what she knows best - good down home cooking!

A classic. Destined to be a favorite!
By Sandra L.
A great cookbook. She has many substitutes for ingredients you might not have on hand. For instance: Out of buttermilk? Add vinegar to a cup of milk and let it sit awhile. This cookbook was a Christmas gift to my friend who has dozens of cookbooks. She told me that she loved it and that it was a classic everyone should have. High praise indeed!

By TZ2DSR
I am really picky about humor, authors, recipes, media hype ... Most hoopla is much ado about nothing these days.
BUT the Pioneer Woman DELIVERS. Big Time! She's FUNNY, and Real, and Down to Earth, her recipes are fantastic. Count me as a fan. I love her blog- EVERYTHING about it. The art, the photos, the way she pokes fun at herself. She feels "like a sister"... I have her book "Black Heels to Tractor Wheels" and it is like hugging a friend when I hold it. seriously. With her cookbook, Now I will always have a friend to hug in the kitchen, too. And I usually cook quite well in my own crazy way, without recipe books - but this one is a MUST for me. With her delicious recipes, fantastic photography where every step has a photo-, even an inexperienced young cook will look like a master in his or her kitchen. Great item for bridal showers, girlfriend gifts and ooooohhhh hubby--- did you see this on my Xmas WISH LIST? What a great gift. If you know about her, then you understand. If you are just discovering her, well GIDDY UP, cowpoke!
UPDATE 12/25/12
Received this for xmas... (big smiley face) - and HUBBY couldn't put it down! He became a fan from just flipping thru the pages... Actually, he went thru every single page and loved reading it all. The recipes are wonderful- but they are just PART of why this book is so great. He's reading her "black heels" book now and I am putting her 2nd recipe book on my BIRTHDAY wish list!

Clarissa: or, The History of a Young Lady, by Samuel Richardson

This classic novel tells the story, in letters, of the beautiful and virtuous Clarissa Harlowe’s pursuit by the brilliant, unscrupulous rake Robert Lovelace. The epistolary structure allows Richardson to create layered and fully realized characters, as well as an intriguing uncertainty about the reliability of the various “narrators.” Clarissa emerges as a heroine at once rational and passionate, self-sacrificing and defiant, and her story has gripped readers since the novel’s first publication in 1747–48.

This new abridgment is designed to retain the novel’s rich characterizations and relationships, and reproduces individual letters in their entirety whenever possible. This Broadview Edition provides a uniquely accessible entry point for readers, while retaining much of the powerful reading experience of the complete novel.

Review

“Clarissa is one of the towering masterpieces of the eighteenth century, and it is impossible to understand the literature of the period and the rise of the novel without it. This new edition provides a rigorously conceived, expertly executed solution to the problem of abridgment, and restores to the undergraduate classroom a work previously excluded by sheer length.” ― Thomas Keymer, University of Toronto

“Arguably the best novel published in Great Britain in the eighteenth century and an undisputed landmark of European literature, Clarissa, at over a million words, is too long for the undergraduate classroom. Here, finally, is an abridgment that, while reducing its length, remains faithful to the spirit of the original. Based on the text of the third edition and judiciously edited by Toni Bowers and John Richetti, the Broadview Clarissa superbly fills a long-standing pedagogical need. With its excellent introduction, detailed notes, and generous background and contextual materials, this edition makes Richardson’s masterpiece accessible to twenty-first century students.” ― Albert J. Rivero, Marquette University

“Eager to introduce rather than replace a masterpiece, Richetti and Bowers offer a practical classroom compromise to the familiar problem of Richardson’s prolixity. Surely an abridgment of this magnitude―with its smart choice of the 1751 third edition as copy text, its accessible introduction and notes, and an appendix that resurrects important historical contexts―will tempt new generations of readers to consider, eventually, all of Clarissa.” ― Janine Barchas, University of Texas at Austin

The subtleties in this text are very easy to miss, and it requires a very careful, thorough reading. It is rife with religious allusions, and as an epistolary novel, you can never really be sure if you're getting an accurate accounting of events from any of the characters, although the main character is by far the most reliable.

If you like soap opera
By Sheila Ortiz-Taylor
If you like soap opera, this is the novel for you. Also feminists and lovers of classic fiction will enjoy this book. The novel is written in letters and therefore requires work and patience by the reader. But your labors will be rewarded.

About the Author
CHARLES WADDELL CHESNUTT (1858-1932) was born in Cleveland, Ohio. An active integrationist and civil rights leader, he was awarded a medal by the NAACP for distinguished literary contributions.

A STORY OF LOVE, LOYALTY AND SURVIVAL
By A Customer
This story is beautifully written. Mr. Chestnutt carefully presents the two different worlds of light-skinned educated blacks and dark-skinned uneducated blacks. He shows how for both groups the Reconstruction era meant an unclear identity. He also shows how both groups are victims of circumstance, but that truth, love, and fidelity can over come those circumstances. I liked this book because as an African-American I know about the "color" problem among our people. I also liked it because it was a true love story and a tear jerker. I suggest you read it aloud to a literary group. It's a wonderful story.

Great book for fun or a course on Reconstruction
By A Customer
I enjoyed all of the stories in this collection, and shared them with my teenagers. They depict with wit, tenderness and irony identity crises of African Americans during and after Reconstruction, and the racism that persisted in both North and South. They read like a mixture of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe with a touch of Jane Austen.
